Slow Morpheus, Rachel Stern’s first monograph, will be published by Matte Editions in the spring of 2019. This oversized, softcover, 180 page book designed by Seokhoon Choi is being printed in the Netherlands on beautiful paper with spot gloss and a cover window. An overview of Stern’s work from 2012 through her most recent works, the book explores themes from the visual history of literature, art, and politics as filtered through a queer-washed, kitsch, and feminist lens. Slow Morpheus includes an essay by the esteemed filmmaker Tom Kalin which beautifully outlines the themes and contexts of Stern’s work. The essay places her projects within a fluid discourse that synthesizes the social power of myth and the pressing, violent realities of politics through pageantry and pragmatism. We hope you will support this project by pre-ordering a copy of the book. We are also offering additional publications, prints, and objet d’art with gratitude for those who wish to show greater support!
Rachel and Matt both teach photography and use photobooks as a central part of their curriculum. Being able to hold, own, interact, and touch photographs in the intimate and flexible manner that a book format allows is a powerful experience which they see give meaning to photography in their student’s lives every day. The opportunity to see projects from emerging artists in this format has been the mission of Matte Editions which has given voice to a community of emerging artists for nearly a decade. Thank you for helping make Slow Morpheus the next publication in this project.
