What is Heat Creep?
Unlike most materials, plastics don’t have a clean transition from solid to liquid during melting. As filament moves through the hotend, it heats up and reaches the material’s glass transition temperature (Tg), entering a semi-solid, semi-liquid, “gooey” state. While in this state, the plastic responds to applied forces like a wet noodle, causing undesirable print effects like reduction in resolution, blobbing and jamming. An efficient heat break narrows the physical distance during which the plastic is at it’s Tg, and thus improves 3D printer performance. The Bimetallic Heat Break™ from Slice Engineering® is the only heat break designed through the use of thermal imaging to optimize heat transfer.

Risks and challenges
The FFF 3D printing market is still very niche, so we will need lots of community support to bring this Kickstarter to life.
We’ve done our very best to minimize product risks by building fully functional prototypes and performing extensive testing both in house at Slice Engineering®, and with some of our talented Beta testers.
Operational risks include perfecting mass-production assembly of the Bimetallic Heat Break™ for the Copperhead™ application and ensuring things go smoothly with coatings suppliers.
There are also the very real existential risks related to knock-offs. Every time someone buys a knock-off product they strike a blow to innovation, independent creative thought, and small scale manufacturing.
