meet Nancy: your tailor
because not everything in life is chocolate...
We'd like to introduce you to Nancy Kyokutamba, who will be making the beautiful kitenge cloth tote-bags and zippered pouches that form such a special part of the moonbean chocolate backer rewards.
We've worked with Nancy on a great many projects over the past three years in Uganda. From furnishing our house with stunning upholstery, through countless costume changes and alterations for both of us, to her incredible work on invitations, bunting, cloth flowers, and table-napkins for our bright and colourful wedding in July. Nancy used to roll her eyes when we'd pull out our diagrams and start explaining a new pattern we wanted her help with - but she'd always be delighted with the result, and so would we!
The pleasure of working in Uganda is primarily the pleasure of building relationships, and it has been an absolute joy to get to know Nancy better over the years. Originally from Mbarara, in the Western Region of Uganda, Nancy studied tailoring in the DRC (Congo), where she has family ties. She set up her small shop in Kampala around the same time as we started living in Makindye, and we've watched - and helped - Nancy grow. She now employs her sister, to cut and pin, and gave birth to a her daughter just before we got married. Nancy is, like all mothers in Uganda, trying to do the best by her growing family. We admire her spirit, diligence, and the pride she takes in her work - it is a passion for craft, and attention to detail, that we share.
So, when you're out sporting your funky (and eco-friendly) shopping bag, you can tell admirers about Nancy - maybe one day you'll even have the pleasure of meeting her in person... this woman will go far!
