world-class chocolate with a conscience
breaking the chocolate mould
We’re currently in the process of identifying small-holding farmers and cooperatives with whom we can partner to grow, harvest, ferment and dry the most high quality cocoa varietals available in Uganda.
Over 70% of the world’s cocoa comes from Africa, but less than 1% of the world’s chocolate is actually made here. Exporting cocoa beans, even those which are Fair Trade or UTZ certified, leaves countries like Uganda with only a little income - while the lion’s share of the profit is made in consuming countries where value is added.
In East Africa most cocoa farmers have never tasted or even seen chocolate - for them the difference between cocoa and chocolate is quite literally the difference between wealth and poverty.
At moonbean chocolate our vision is to help create sustainable jobs that are adding value to local commodities by making chocolate and cacao products at the source, here in East Africa. We are developing a chocolate company that can reimagine the way that cacao is traded, and chocolate is made, to offer our customers honest, feel-good chocolate of premium quality.
In craftsmen’s parlance, we are breaking the mould!
