About

Hello! We're Jamie and Chris. We are illustrators and storytellers and we are on a journey to create and publish picture books for children.

We are asking you to help us fund the production of a picture book about Pogwin.

Pogwin: The Picture Book
Pogwin: The Picture Book

Pogwin tells the tale of a reclusive creature who lives in an abandoned wood on a busy traffic roundabout. This once ancient woodland is now hemmed in by over-developed urban sprawl. It has been reduced to a small copse of trees but it is still rich in biodiversity. The wood is protected by Pogwin's stewardship and his chlorophilia! Oblivious to the secret world within, people race past never noticing Pogwin and the animals that live there.

We want to help parents and guardians read with children to stir their imagination whilst exploring themes of conservation, deforestation and unrestrained urban sprawl. We believe picture books can play a vital role in achieving this.

We're inspired by this quote from Roald Dahl, the master of storytelling:

“the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”

Pogwin is our attempt at helping children, mums and dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles to reunite with that magical world of the picture book.

We hope we've created something unique in the way that the story reflects both the physical and the emotional journey of the main character. Picture books are important tools to support a child's development. We're also passionate about nature and conservation and we think we can draw attention towards the issues of conservation and deforestation whilst continuing to stir the imagination of children. With your help we hope in some small way this will make a difference for future generations. We hope we've achieved this through a creative blend of words and images that will keep you and your little ones coming back to the book.

We work and play hard when it comes to our illustrations! We want the illustrations to be eye-catching and memorable; a feast for the imagination. We want to create an opportunity for you to take your children on new picture walks following Pogwin on his journey from the safety of the trees into the hidden world of the city.

Each 'Chapter' will have it's own intro page.
Each 'Chapter' will have it's own intro page.

We're totally focused on making this a beautiful book but of course you'll be the judge of that. We think we've done our homework and have researched the costs, the budget, the risks and challenges (you can read some of these at the bottom of the page). We are in continual dialogue with our printers to source the best possible sustainable materials in keeping with the themes of the book.

With your help we can deliver this publication to a picture book loving audience. For your hard earned pledges we will reward you with the following:

We hope you see the value in our rewards. We're sure Pogwin would approve with our tree planting. If we reach our target we'll plant a tree - just one - and dedicate it to all of our supporters. But if we smash our target we'll increase the number of trees planted via the following stretch goals.

This project is not about us, it's about a community of people coming together to help give this story a life beyond our imaginations. Exceeding the funding target would be amazing. If this were to happen we'd spread the love by making the book more elegant and even building a grove of trees!

Here's a start:

The higher the overall total, the better the book.
The higher the overall total, the better the book.

We met at college and decided to get together to create and publish our own stories. We're both dads so we've spent many hours telling our own stories to our kids.

Collaborators!
Collaborators!

We've been working on Pogwin for six months and it's been a fascinating creative journey reaffirming our passion for picture books. With your support Kickstarter will provide an opportunity for us to launch our own publishing business.

From acorns great oaks grow.
From acorns great oaks grow.

Pogwin lives in a woodland and in an effort to increase the population of Pogwins in our little valley we're going to plant a tree as a thank you to all our backers. If we smash our total and we reach different stretch goals we'll plant more trees and start our own mini woodland.

The original illustrations in Pogwin measure roughly 40cm x 30cm and are rendered in watercolour and coloured pencil on paper. Each illustration takes between 15 to 20 hours to complete. We both have input in terms of how the illustration supports the story then Chris brings them to life.

The aim is to juxtapose the text and illustrations to try to cast a spell on the reader; drawing them in to the magical world of Pogwin, fusing poetry, dialogue, composition and colour.

We'll create illustrations which convey ideas that aren't necessarily found within the text; the aim is to create a rich multi-layered pictorial experience.

The story will be told through a mix of prose and poetry. We want to separate the story into discrete sections or acts. Each act will be introduced by a piece of prose setting the scene for what the reader is about to see; a type of narration.

Then throughout the pages that follow the only other voice will be Pogwin himself. He speaks in stunted rhythmical sentences that reflect his character; emotionally laden and expressive yet to the point.

Our creative process starts with an idea, something that has been bubbling away inside us for a while. We toss the idea back and forth fuelled by coffee and Welsh cakes. This allows us to expand and build the idea into a stronger visual story. For Pogwin, Jamie is the writer and Chris is the illustrator although we give constructive feedback to each other at all times.

Creative fuel Wales style.
Creative fuel Wales style.

If we reach our target we will be able to cover the first print run to publish Pogwin. Anything above that would be amazing. What happens if we smash the target? Well, in addition to covering the cost of extra rewards, we plan to invest in our next series of books; we've a studio full of fun ideas and hope to bring them all to you through Kickstarter!

We love picture books! They are often the first step along the road to a lifelong love of reading. And as big kids (we're talking about us) we continue to find picture books even more magical. Some of our picture book heroes include Edward Gorey, Jon Klassen, Maurice Sendak and Shaun Tan.

We love picture books.
We love picture books.

When a really young child picks up a picture book for the first time, she or he is participating in the act of reading even if the words just make another series of interesting patterns. The book becomes a fascinating object of participation.

The picture book is also a bridge between the generations. Just think how the sight of a parent or grandparent reading with their younger relatives is heart warming and memorable.

Picture books help build vocabulary and introduce readers to a world of writing and art.  They also provide a safe environment for strange, unusual and challenging aspects of life to be explored.

And finally, the picture book nourishes and encouragers visual thinking through enquiry as opposed to the sit back bombardment that can be experienced through a TV or computer screen. Picture book illustrations can help young readers make connections with the world around them and a world of fantasy which fires the imagination.

We're champions of the indie print scene and strong believers in creative people doing it for themselves. We hope Kickstarter will help us create and publish our books to a new picture-book loving audience and make friends & fans at the same time.

You can see more of our work on our Website, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

THANKS!

Jamie and Chris

P.S. a big shout out to Jamey Stegmaier (http://stonemaiergames.com/kickstarter/), Zoe Keller and Chris Mrozik for allowing us to learn from their Kickstarter experiences! Thanks guys.

Risks and challenges

We're so committed to this project. We want to spend the rest of our lives making picture books so we just can't afford for this to go wrong. We've already made a big commitment to this project in both time and money.

National and International shipping and fulfilment is always a key issue to consider when developing a campaign like this. We've done our research and looked at all of the options. We've done our best to clearly explain our shipping costs, highlighted in the rewards section. We think these provide the best option for getting your rewards to you securely and speedily.

We've worked really closely with our book printing company. They are very professional and experienced in printing children's books, so we don't expect any challenges when it comes to printing the book. If we do experience any hurdles to jump over we will let you know straight away. We'll work hard to solve any problems if they occur and then deliver your rewards as soon as possible.

Then there's us. Human. Mortal. But our feet are still firmly on the ground. Jamie has extensive creative project management experience and Chris has a passion for illustrating that goes beyond the healthy. It is not impossible that one of us may be incapacitated by Poison Ivy, squashed by a falling oak branch or lost for ever in an enchanted forest. However we've been around for a while and nothing that exciting has happened to us yet! We expect to be here, and focussed on making you happy, for the foreseeable.
