Sky Candy recently signed a 10 year lease with Springdale General to build our new 6500+ square foot aerial and circus arts studio. We have already secured funding to build out the space into the teaching studio of our dreams, but we need your help in helping us transform the studio into an awesome, versatile performance space!
Sky Candy first started in Austin, TX in July 2010. At that time, our home neighborhood boasted no fewer than eight theatrical performance spaces. Now, East Austin has three remaining theatrical performance venues, none of which are ideal for our height requirements, audience size or specialized aerial rigging needs. Austin, as a whole, has suffered the loss of numerous performance arts spaces in the past seven years.
With your support, we can create a versatile space that can be an ideal venue for not only our own aerial and circus arts performance needs, but also serve as a rentable space for local and touring companies seeking a space with tall ceilings (21' - 29'), theatrical lighting and sound designed with aerial and other movement artists in mind, seating for an audience of 100+, and more!
Where Your Money Goes
Thanks to a combination of tenant improvement dollars, small business loans, and private investors, Sky Candy’s Springdale General space is almost fully funded! We will be able to cover the cost of *almost everything* going into the space through the combination of the above resources. This means we’ll be able to build out spacious rooms with tons of safely spaced rig points, an HVAC system designed specifically to the needs of an aerial arts studio, bathrooms with showers, a gym space with weights, mirrors, and cardio equipment, and much more.
To transform our space into the performance venue of our dreams, here's where we can use your help!
- Audience risers to help us easily transform our space from teaching studio to comfortable performance venue: $2,500
- 21’ tall theatre quality curtains to create an elegant backdrop for our performance space in the Main Studio: $6,000
- Performance-quality lighting (including Inno Spot Pros (movers), spotlight with stand, dimmer bars, LED par cans, and stands): $15,000
- Performance-quality sound system (including speakers, monitors, sound board, microphones): $10,000
- Rock Exotica Butterfly Lift - a professional aerial lift system designed for aerialists and the requisite required training: $6,500
- Scissor Lift - with 21’ - 29’ ceilings, we’ll be needing a way to safely access beams for rig checks, rig change outs, adjusting lighting for shows and more: $20,000
TOTAL BUDGET: $60,000
Our total budget is considerably greater than what we're asking for in this Kickstarter campaign. Our goal of $20,000 is enough to get us set up with our basic needs (risers, curtains, basic light and sound package) for the performance space. Our stretch goal will be to meet our full performance space budget of $60,000, but if we do not meet it with this campaign, we plan to seek additional individual donors through other avenues.
If you are interested in making your donation tax-deductible, please contact owner Winnie Hsia at email@example.com.
Hot off the presses from Katie Makes Art, here is one of our laser cut acrylic aerialists hanging out at our Main Studio! Donate at the $300 level to get one made of you! You'll get to pick our color and pose! (This one still has the paper backing because it's clear.)
What People Say About Us
As a traveling circus instructor, I visit studios all over the US. I constantly find myself returning to Sky Candy. Their space and staff strike a balance between athleticism and artistry, technique and expression, professional development and recreational self-exploration. It is a community that purses uncompromising inclusion in fostering talent. The results are astounding. Sky Candy demonstrates heart and intelligence in every facet of its business model. Risks and challenges
Sky Candy has successfully run as a self-funded aerial and circus arts studio since 2010. To date, we have produced 8 full length theatrical production and dozens of showcase and variety show performances, including student showcases. We have had tens of thousands of students experience the aerial arts in our teaching studio.
Our team is made up of experienced business, theatre, and circus arts professionals who will do everything we can to ensure that the project runs as smoothly as possible.
The biggest challenges we may face will be building delays, but we have a generous build-out period and we trust that our architectural and contracting teams will do all that they can to help us stay on time with the project. If we do experience delays in build out, we plan on continuing to teach classes at our two current spaces on Calles and Cesar Chavez to ensure an uninterrupted class schedule for our students and steady income more a smooth transition to Springdale General.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
