In July of 2011, I wrote a script for issue #1 of the Kingdom of Loathing comic, and a synopsis of a 6-issue story arc. I found Doug through a friend of a friend, and though he had never played KoL, he got exactly the look and feel the book needed. His initial sketches and color tests blew me away. But I wasn't sure if the KoL community was interested in a comic book. So we took to Kickstarter, trying to raise enough money to print the first issue. We raised enough to print all six.
Now, three years later(!), the story is complete. Issue 6 just went up for sale. Now we get to do what I've barely dared to dream we could do: We're going to make a trade paperback! We're collecting all six issues and adding a bunch of bonus material, to make something you'd be proud to put on your coffee table, or even the top of your toilet tank.
The purpose of this Kickstarter is to raise enough money to order 1,000 trade paperbacks and a wide assortment of other cool swag. It includes paying Doug to illustrate and color a BRAND NEW 10-PAGE RIDDLIN MINI-COMIC, make an EXCLUSIVE POSTER, and BRAND NEW WRAP-AROUND ART for the cover.
And! Ooo! The stretch goals are fantastic.
At $18,000, we'll buy a little more of Doug's time to re-letter the entire series for better legibility.
At $19,000, it gets really exciting. Because it won't be a trade paperback anymore. At $19,000, every single book will be hardcover.
At $20,000, all of those newly hardcover books get a swanky dust jacket.
At $30,000, the book gets bigger! We'll add 4 more pages of art, commissioning new takes on these beloved characters (well, I belove them, anyway) from the amazing artists of the KoL Calendars.
At $100,000, I will immediately begin work on KoL Comics Series 2. 10 years after Jill 8-Pack and her crew defeated the Naughty Sorceress, There is once again something rotten in the Kingdom of Loathing. The King is missing, replaced with a slightly sinister Council. There are mysterious sights and sounds around the ruins of the Naughty Sorceress tower. What do you do when the story's over, but the bad guys keep coming?
KoL Series 2 will feature returning favorites and a new cast of characters as well. It's a story I really want to tell, but only if you all want to hear it. So let us know!
Thanks for reading all of this, and thanks for checking the project out. You are the best internet community in the world, and I can't wait to take this journey with you.
Risks and challenges
The main challenge for this project will be managing Doug's time. His wife is having a baby approximately (checks watch) now, so he'll be adjusting to life as a new father. We're confident he can carve out the time, though, to do what needs doing.
As far as fulfillment goes, Skully's got a pretty good handle on printing and shipping from the first Kickstarter. We'll be working with an established printer with a sterling reputation. We don't foresee any problems with fulfillment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
