A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
What is Skullavera?
Skullavera is a handmade design piece which comes from our passion for skulls, pirate legends and ancient Mexican traditions of decorative skulls.
Every Skullavera is unique and made just for you, it's numbered and signed. We are extremely happy to finally share our project with the Kickstarter community! Without further ado, let us introduce your our current lineup!
We have designed Skullavera studying on anatomical tables of human and monkey skulls. After countless tests, we ended up with this look. We hope you will find it cute and exciting as much as we do.
Skullavera is entirely handmade in our workshop in Verona, Italy using just water and gypsum. There are no chemicals or additives. Skullavera is a solid block of molded gypsum. We stain the naturally aged variant with coffee and tea in order to give it a 300 years old look. Our black variant is made using a special mixture of gypsum and iron oxide which is non toxic, just as every other Skullavera.
If you believe in superstitions, Skullavera is not just a plain gypsum skull, it's much more than that. Pirates used to collect monkey skulls to give them powers and create legends. Skullavera comes from these legends and carries their powers! The red paper stripe around the box has 9 symbols, those draws are not only ornamental, they're a clear message for you. Did you tear close to a particular symbol? Find what that symbol means in the parchment booklet inside and discover the power of your Lucky Skullavera!
Skullavera, especially the plain white one, is intended to be decorated. Almost every technique is well suited: use pencils, felt tip pens, markers, crayons, tempera, acrylics, watercolors, Indian ink and much more! Don't be afraid to experiment! Did you made a mistake? No problem! Use some white paint to start over, the one you would use at home for your walls will do the job just fine.
We have been working on this project for over 2 years, always bootstrapping our way to where we are today. After countless hours of work and dedication, we are now ready to offer Skullavera to you guys, but we need your help to make this dream come true. We have chosen to crowdfund Skullavera in order to share the project with the Kickstarter community, learn from it and be involved in something more important than just putting the product on sale. We want you to be part of the team so we can learn and respond to your feedback as you were here in our lab with us. It is extremely important for us to craft every Skullavera by hand, one after the other, so you can feel that it was made in an authentic way. We want to keep using recycled cardboard for our boxes that we stamp individually and patiently with antique wooden stamps. Also the parchment booklet is essential, it is the perfect display companion for your Skullavera. We need new equipment to accommodate a way more efficient production (always handmade, of course), acquire materials and cover some basic establishing costs. We have totaled the required initial investment to be a minimum €5000 in order to make this project a viable success. It will allow us to complete our first large production run and to fulfill all Kickstarter orders. We will also be able to build an online store to bring Skullavera to even more fans all over the world.
We are a small and extremely passione team. We have been working together for over 4 years. We have finally found our home in Skullavera and we are honored to share this project with you.
MARCO Marco is the man. Marco is our marketing and customer care guru. He is in charge of all the commercial aspects of Skullavera. Any questions on Skullavera? Ask Marco!
LUCA Luca is the mind behind Skullavera. A true pirate, Luca is our creative director and production specialist. You should see his collection of skulls and pirate memorabilia. Terrific.
MASTER JACOB Master Jacob, nuff said. Jacob reigns on our production lab. There is no human being on Earth more talented than this guy in crafting your next Skullavera.
Risks and challenges
Research & Development
Skullavera already has over 2 years of R&D in the bank. We have made around 100 tests with different techniques, equipment and mold materials in order to deliver the best product. We are veterans of gypsum molding, and have worked in many high-stress situations to develop great products.
Since our process is completely made by hand, it takes around 10 days to have a Skullavera ready to ship. At this time, we are able to produce just a few pieces a day. Our production plan is to have all the required pieces before October 1st. We have already started to produce the first batches so we will not be caught off-guard if the demand will exceed the expected numbers. We will never outsource our production, but we have already prepared a set of contingency plans just in case of unexpected delays, equipment failure and booming demand. We have worked in many high-stress situations so we believe there is no chance you will disappointed.
Order Fulfillment & Shipping
We have built relationships with two separate shipping companies to deliver orders in time for Halloween. We will be starting to ship orders on, or before, the end of the campaign. Feel free to get in touch with us if you have any questions about shipping and deliveries.
Since every piece is made by hand, every Skullavera is considered unique. Although we try to minimize the effect of external agents, every Skullavera may slightly differ in look and color due to ambient temperature and humidity during the production process.
