About

Why this project can make a difference

This project will work (excuse the pun) on several levels;

For students and undergraduates the project will inform and inspire people about the fantastic career opportunities in the construction industry for highly skilled professionals; architects, designers and engineers.

It will showcase the excellence of the UK Construction Industry and why it could be a career of choice for many people.

Young people from schools across the UK, university students and professors will be involved in the project alongside industry leaders working together on this great challenge, to create the World's tallest lego tower.

We want this project to encourage people of all ages to think big (or tall) and to have REAL ambition, to show anything is possible through innovation and collaboration with others.

This project will be fun for people of all ages.

The tallest lego tower Guinness world record  history....

In June 2014 the world’s largest Lego tower was built in Budapest. Constructed in front of Saint Stephen’s Basilica, it measured 34.76 metres (114 Feet) tall and was made up of nearly half a million plastic bricks. With 3,648 layers of blue, red, green, white and yellow bricks (32 layers per foot) 90,000 bricks of each colour. The tower took four days to build.

Traditionally, a new world record for the tallest Lego tower is set each year. The previous record of 34.43 metres was set in August 2013 by a bunch of students in Delaware in the US.

Help us make change.........

Skills4Stem are working in partnership with  Footprint and the Chartered Institute of Building to build a Guinness World Record breaking tower in the UK by designing and building a unique 37m Lego tower in spring 2016.

The tower will showcase Britain’s excellence and innovation to the world and set out, very brightly, the career opportunities available to students and graduates with a passion for architecture, engineering and construction.

Who is Skills4Stem?

Sarah Davis said: “I wanted to do something big and exciting, to let more people know how brilliant the UK construction industry is and what amazing opportunities it offers. I wanted to make people smile and feel positive about construction, so what better than the world’s tallest Lego tower? It’s been so inspiring to see how the industry is responding to our ambition, from friends and colleagues through to people we’re meeting for the first time. Everyone loves the tower, and it’s great to see this enthusiasm for what we’re doing. I want every construction project to be like this; full of excitement, learning, sharing and fun.”

Help us create a project with a legacy....

Please help us build this project, we want to bring together an industry outreach team of volunteers: thought leaders, institutions, organisations and individuals who will work COLLABORATIVELY to share the good work everyone is doing and share it coherently UK-WIDE with schools, colleges, volunteer organisations and those looking for work so everyone will be aware of the professions in the Construction industry, what is involved and just as importantly where to go to find the vacancies.  The legacy of this project will continue much longer than the project itself.....

We want to create a beacon of colour and community, the Skills4Stem Tower will showcase the UK as a centre of excellence for engineering and building award winning tall buildings. The structure will also be a monument to our leadership, collaboration, design and technical innovation, creating a project where young and old, corporates and SMEs and professionals and pupils, can come together to learn, share and collaborate to create brilliance.

The event will combines a host of key messages around leadership, inclusion, ambition, teamwork, fun and success.

How we will build the tower.......

The professional project teams have agreed to give their support 'in kind' donating extensive professional services, skills and people power in order to help us make this project happen on a small budget but we need your help to fund the purchase of over 500,000 Lego bricks.

With the world record smashed, people will then get their brick to keep.

Sarah Davis said: “We're inviting families and businesses across the country to get involved and help build the tower.

Every brick you buy will take us one centimetre closer to achieving our goal, which means you can say ‘I helped build the world’s tallest Lego tower!’ To build a tower 37 metres tall we need over 500,000 bricks. Having your brick to keep will be something to be proud of.”

As well as showcasing the UK’s construction talent, the tower be used to take a positive message into schools, to inform and inspire.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest challenge is to purchase the bricks so with your support for this project we hope we can overcome this.

We have been promised technical expertise, cranes, a project manager, construction materials and a high profile prestigious location 'in kind' so we expect the risk regarding this part of the project is fairly small. If any of the proposed support is unavailable, there is a large pool of organisations who would help.

In order for this project to have the greatest impact and legacy after the build we are relying on support from a large network of Construction Industry professionals, industry institutions, charities, schools and universities. This part of the project is still evolving and will need further work to maximise the outreach opportunities. This will gain momentum in September at the start of the new academic year.
