Hello, and welcome to my Kickstarter campaign for Unfamiliar Skies!
Realising that the nearest inhabitable planet is thousands of light years away, scientists develop a self sustaining colony ship knowing the original crew will never reach their destination but hoping that their descendants might.
Claris Muston is a 19 year old resident of the colony born several generations after the vessel started it's journey. She's frustrated that her fate has been decided for her by her great-great-great-great (you get the idea) grandfather. Out of resentment and rebellion she steals one of the colony's scout ships and runs away into space!
Alone and face-to-face with the sheer size of the Universe, Claris realises she didn't have a plan beyond her initial escape and this is where our story begins.
Let's meet our cast!
Claris is a long way from home, a little insecure (which she hides by being a smart ass) and definitely winging it! Thankfully, she can kick all sorts of arse with her twin tonfa sticks!
When Claris crash lands on planet Groensvell, Kaupmadr brings her back to his workshop in one piece and even offers to fix her ship, but everything comes at a price...
Another native of planet Groensvell, Istrumagi has something Kaupmadr wants and it's going to be Claris' job to go and get it.
Creating and printing a comic isn't free, there are numerous costs involved that necessitate the existence of this Kickstarter. This book might not happen without your funding, so I think it's only fair to open the books and show you exactly how I plan to spend the £600 I'm asking for.
Domestic shipping is based on shipping 100 physical copies of Unfamiliar Skies #1 within the UK according to the Royal Mail's online price guide.
Kickstarter fees and payment processing fees are each based on 5% of the total funding goal, as advised by Kickstarter itself.
Tax is based on 20% basic rate of overall funding goal.
Of course, this isn't a charity and I don't expect you to pledge without getting something in return. All of the rewards are listed down the right hand side of the page, here are a few images to help you see what you're getting!
International pledges are welcomed, however there are shipping fees for backers outside the UK. Kickstarter will show you these fees before you confirm your pledge. Postage pricing is based on Royal Mail's online price guide.
A DRM free, screen resolution, PDF copy of Unfamiliar Skies for you to read and enjoy. This is available from as little as £1!
A physical copy of Unfamiliar Skies #1, printed to a high standard!
A beautiful piece of a key piece of concept artwork, available in A4 and A3 sizes.
A black t-shirt featuring the Unfamiliar Skies logo.
Before I started working on Unfamiliar Skies, I released 4 comics. Arcadia, a one shot where everyone in town has their video game consoles stolen on the same night, and Joe Cape, a super powered parody book where heroes' services are sold as subscription services!
What's a good Kickstarter without some awesome stretch goals?
£750 - Limited reprint of Arcadia
My first ever comic, Arcadia, has been sold out and out of print for a while, however if we reach £750 I'll do a limited reprint of at least 50 copies with a brand new cover. This reprint will automatically be added to anyone who pledged for a physical back catalogue!
£1,000 - Free digital copy of Unfamiliar Skies #2
Yes, if we reach £1,000 then every single backer will receive a digital copy of Unfamiliar Skies #2 on it's release!
£1,200 - Free digital copy of Unfamiliar Skies #3
If we can raise double the original goal then every single backer will receive a digital copy of Unfamiliar Skies #3 on it's release!
£1,500 - Free A5 sketch with all physical copies of Unfamiliar Skies #1!
Should we reach the dizzying heights of £1,500, every backer whose rewards include a physical copy of Unfamiliar Skies #1 will receive a free A5 sketch with their comic!
Risks and challenges
I'm aiming to launch this book at Melksham Comic Con on August 27th 2016. There are still some pages to finish between now and then. If I get sick or injured, if my printer gets sick of injured, if somehow the files on my hard drive, USB thumb drive back up and external hard drive back up were to all become corrupted, or if any number of unforeseen disasters were to occur, like a flood at the printers', then the comic might not be ready for that date. Fingers crossed, none of those things will happen but if they do the comic will still be released and you'll still get your rewards, it'd just be a couple of weeks later than planned.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
