A Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game Bestiary?

Posted by Steve Jackson Games (Creator)

In the office, we're exploring ideas for new support for the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game, including a possible reprint of the box set. One option, and the one that's looking like our top candidate at the moment, is a Dungeon Fantasy Bestiary

Sample spread.

As a proof of concept, Sean and Nikki took time to create three sample monsters. This gives us an idea of our expected in-house costs to create the book, and everything is making this book look like a strong possibility for a 2019 Kickstarter project.

We'll continue to put energy into costing out a possible Bestiary book, and we would love to hear from you: Are you interested in seeing a 64-page (or more, maybe) full-color Bestiary book for the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game?

The sample monsters for the DFRPG Bestiary are awesome. And I'm also glad to see giants around.

    3. Peter Raines on

I will buy this in a hot second.

    4. Bill Jackson on

I'm in for this. I would back it in a heartbeat!

I would absolutely support this - it is a fantastic idea! Just do it as they say

Yes please! The bigger the better, why stop at 64 pages, make it 128. Could Points Values for creatures also be included to help balance encounters. I like the proposed layout, and could each illustration be done by the same artist, I dislike products with differing styles of artwork.
For me the Bestiary is a definite buy.

Yeah, I'm totally in, please do that!! ;)
...a real cool softcover bestiary would be perfect for the DFRPG and also very, very nice and useful for many other GURPS games including fantasy creatures, too...

Moreover maybe that would be an opportunity to fill some "general" bestiary gaps for GURPS, too, fulfilling two goals at once...? If more pages are an option later, it would be so great to include some common animals, too, along with a few minor hacks to turn them into fantastic creatures with some curiosity factor.

      Go, go, go! :)

Yes pls. I love also to see Trait templates: Like OK Page 30 I have a Giant that I can combine with a Trait Template like Fire, Shadow etc.

      @Craig Roth - "I vote yes on the Kickstarter for Bestiary, with a modest goal . . . "

Just gonna crush this ASAP before it gets away.

If this book happens, it will _not_ have a modest goal and it will _not_ have "a ridiculous number of stretch goals that, when reached, with give the backers a 300 page hardcover tome."

If a Bestiary book (and reprint of the boxed game) happens, it will include a realistic goal and a set (and realistic) number of stretch goals. And shipping costs will be real costs of shipping.

    21. Charles Saeger on

Say, can we have half-damage ranges listed for those big rocks?

    22. Stephen Murrish

      I'm interested.

    23. Celti Burroughs on

      Definitely interested in a bestiary!

    24. Douglas H. Cole on

Owen: there are a few HoJ copies still staged in the UK. Contact me and we’ll make something happen.

    25. Raymond Fielding Pratt on

      A bestiary would be great!

Hell yes! Would buy in print and pdf!

    28. Craig Roth on

I vote yes on the Kickstarter for Bestiary, with a modest goal and a ridiculous number of stretch goals that, when reached, with give the backers a 300 page hardcover tome. :)

A bestiary? Count me in, along with a 2-3 from our gaming group.

The art looks amazing, I vote yes on at least a 64 page bestiary and a reprint of the DFRPG!

      Joseph Lockett

      A bestiary supplement? Heck, yeah!

    32. Missing avatar

      John Buczek

Yes, I would get a Bestiary in a heartbeat.

I was going to order a soft back of Hall Of Judgement from W23, but the cheapest shipping to the UK is $23.50 which nearly doubles the price. That's too much. Can you make it available as a Print On Demand from Amazon please?

    35. Missing avatar

      Matt Riggsby

This, more than more adventures, is the expansion that the DFRPG needs most. Would back.

    36. Missing avatar

      Karl J. Smith

Yes, a bestiary would be great!

    37. Wayne Stewart on

I would back this, would it be possible to add a TFT stat block to each entry?
Potentially this could be as a separate pdf (or an add on if this is going to be a kickstarter).

    38. Che Webster on

      Yes please! Will buy bestiary.

    39. Missing avatar

      Cody Norton on

      Will trade money for this.

    40. John F. Schad III on

      shuddup and take our money!

    41. Micah Wheeler on

I’d absolutely back and or buy a bestiary!

It’s one thing the DF box was really missing that I didn’t realize until I started running it.

    42. Missing avatar

      Owen Smith on

I'd back this, preferrably in physical form with shipping to the UK that is not insanely expensive. But if my only option was to back a PDF then I would do so, hopefully it would then be available as Print On Demand from Amazon.

Note, despite Brexit if there is any sort of outcome other than "No deal" the UK will still be in the single market as part of the transition period when this ships, so drop shipping anywhere in the EU should work for the UK.

I really hope you reprint the DFRPG box set as well! The game won't grow if there is no stock to order, and the hard work of creating it is already done.

    43. Frederik Vezina

Do mundane animals as an add-on or stretch goal, so we have horses and donkeys and dogs to buy.
