About this project

I recently got into American style trapshooting. As a software engineer, I decided to create a software simulator for myself so that I could get better without spending a lot of money. I would like to share my simulator with you.

If you back this project you will get the American style trapshooting simulation software for PC and instructions on how to make a controller mount from cardboard, which transforms your HTC VIVE controller into a shotgun. The combination of my software with the unique cardboard mount will give you a high fidelity trapshooting simulation experience like no other. The Google Cardboard project used cardboard to change users’ interactions with mobile devices. This project will do the same for HTC VIVE controllers. With more backing, my American style trapshooting simulator can be done for mobile VR as well.

I need Kickstarter funds to polish my simulation software for public release (better 3D and audio assets, documentation, etc) and to prepare specific and detailed instructions on how to make a cutout from corrugated cardboard (stencils, video, etc).

Stretch goals

$20,000 - precut cardboard mount, just fold and use
$30,000 - mobile VR support

Reaching the first stretch goal will make it possible to create precut cardboard that you can fold and play. If you contribute $15 or more to the project you will get one for free (see rewards). Design and preparation of a cutting die is prohibitively expensive for small quantities. Therefore, there should be enough interest to make it financially feasible.

Reaching the second stretch goal will allow me to finish the development of my American style trapshooting simulator with cardboard shotgun for mobile VR. As shown in the video, I have a proof of concept ready, but developing for mobile devices requires more time and experimentation to ensure good user experience on various mobile devices. Given that I have VIVE, I have not used mobile VR for training, therefore I need to know that there is enough interest for this application in order to proceed with the development.

Simulator functionality

American style trapshooting has five stations to shoot from around the bunker. My simulator has five bunkers and one station. You can see only one bunker at a time. The relationship between your position and the bunker at each station is preserved and there is no need to move from station to station. You use voice to launch a bird. After a shot you are shown the relationship between your shot and the bird so you can judge if you were too low or leading too much. Bird visual size can be increased without increasing target area for ease of practice. You can also keep repeating the last shot to practice angles that give you the most trouble. Information about each shot is logged into a file (in comma separated values format) that you can analyze to gain better understanding of your behavior.

Cardboard shotgun

The core of this project is the ability to practice proper posture and body movement during practice. I will provide you with instructions on how to make the mount out of a cardboard box and duct tape.

Risks and challenges

The technology for this project is not new, but nobody knows if there is a large public interest. I wanted the simulator for myself and I love working on such projects and that is why I made it. Now I am asking the question about public interest. You have seen a video of the system in action. I currently use it for my own training. There are still a few steps required to bring the software up to release quality standard, but these steps have very low risk associated with them. I have a proven track record of delivering finished products, specifically in the area of serious games. Check out my bio page for more information.
