A premium caddy (card holder) for playing Dominion, the popular deck-building game. Laser-cut and etched in wood. Amazing detail.
Vision / Goal
Here's why I am passionate about board games: togetherness. Sounds a little vague, right? For me, togetherness is that which you find between intimacy and community. It is the middle ground somewhere between a whispered conversation and a dance party; it is a small group of people talking, connecting, joking, and learning. In togetherness, you get both a joining of forces and an exhibition of individuality.
My dream is to make art that fosters togetherness. Making such art is hard. This art is born already facing a challenge -- to succeed, it has to be shared, it has to get into people's hands. Without people, there's no togetherness. Only when people get together around the art, share it, create an experience with it, does it succeed. And the more people it finds its way to, the more it succeeds.
You can help it succeed.
I have spent over 100 hours sketching, refining, vectorizing, tweaking, and prototyping 3 designs for a Dominion(TM) Caddy in the hopes that they can be made available to the general public and everyone's games can be played with added beauty and more fun.
Last year, hundreds of brave and generous backers helped me launch a Settlers of Catan(TM) accessory (if you were one of them, thank you). I think Kickstarter can work its magic a second time. Dominion is one of the most popular "German-style" board games and its fans often develop an obsession (I count myself among those obsessed).
So, fellow fans and friends of fans, I need your help to fund a production run. With support from backers, I can ramp up quickly and even get some caddies ready for Christmas delivery. (These rewards would make great gifts)
Thanks for checking out the vision and the goal. If you'd like more background information, check out my blog at boardcrafting.com. Now, on to the rewards...
Laser cutting is an expensive process, but once you hold one of these in your hands, you know it's worth it. There are also labor, quality control, shipping, and time costs associated with making one of these caddies, so I've made several reward levels that will give everybody a chance to get something cool and useful from this project.
At the basic level, I'm offering "Blank Buddy". This is a no-frills Dominion caddy without any etching. Great if you've got a tight budget and you just want a clean, functional organizer.
There are 3 etched options, each one is available either with ($60 option) or without ($50 option) a felt backing.
The Apollo's Garden design is intended to invoke nature. A clean, airy surface upon which leaves are mingling and merging into the background.
The Lyrical Scabbard design is inspired by celtic knots. With this braided pattern, I wanted to complement the historic theme of Dominion.
The Golden Future motif invokes a sense of wealth and fluidity. It's pictured here with the felt backing, but is also available without.
In response to feedback, I've added a new reward level at $75. This is sort of a "grab bag" reward. Do you want wider slots? More slots? Support for higher decks? The "Nouveautype Caddy" is the reward for you. This is like a "light" commission. It's just like an Etched Caddy, but you get to select from any or all of the following options:
- Felt bottom
- 10, 12, or 14 slots ("slots" are the entirely cut-out spaces, whereas "notches" are the spaces on the sides)
- square or rounded slot and notch corners
- slot width: regular / sleeved (63mm) / other (request custom width)
- regular or double height (double height will comfortably fit decks of 36 cards)
I have chosen the delivery date and price based on the iteration and prototyping, as well as changes to the art necessary, depending on your options. Also shipping costs will increase for the larger caddies. Please, as always, let me know if you have any further feedback.
Digital Vector Source Files
For people who would like to craft their own Dominion Caddy, I've made the source files available as a reward. ALSO, this reward will get you 6 months of exclusivity to these files. I won't be making them available to anyone but these backers until June at the earliest. ALSO, this reward entitles access you to any further changes I make to the designs going forward. The files will be SVG format, licensed under Creative Commons By-NC-SA.
What about sleeves in the < $75 rewards?
Some sleeves work, others don't. For those that don't, I am in the middle of coming up with new designs that will accommodate them. Please check back soon or subscribe to my blog to be notified when they are ready.
This is an accessory to Dominion. You'll need to have a copy of the game to play. This project is in no way affiliated or endorsed by the publishers or trademark holders of the Dominion board game.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Estimated delivery dates included in this page are indeed estimates and are subject to change. I have a plan for the manufacturing of a production run, but unknown factors may delay the process and cause the delivery date to be later than expected.
This is a solo project and that means I put my heart and soul into the products and feel a very personal commitment to their on-time delivery, but also, if I get hit by a bus or flattened by a falling piano, there is nobody else to pick up where I left off. Let's all hope I don't die!
It wasn't until 1/3 of the way through my campaign that I discovered that I could lower the shipping costs.
What used to be $30 for anyone has been reduced to $10 for Canada and $15 for other international shipping.
The way Kickstarter works, I can't edit those rewards that say "add $30". But please be assured that $30 is NOT the shipping cost. It is $10 for Canada and $15 other international. Please do not add $30 to your order for shipping.
