You tie your shoes, put on your headphones, take your first few steps outside. You’ve barely covered a hundred yards when you hear them. They must be close.
You can hear every gutteral breath, every rattling groan - they’re everywhere. Zombies. There’s only one thing you can do: Run!
Zombies, Run! is an ultra-immersive game for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android where you help rebuild civilisation after a zombie apocalypse. By going out and running in the real world, you can collect medicine, ammo, batteries, and spare parts that you can use to build up and expand your base - all while getting orders, clues, and story through your headphones.
It doesn't matter where you run.
It doesn't matter how fast you run.
It doesn't matter how far you run.

Zombies, Run! is about making the thrill of running even better with a game and a story delivered through your headphones. We’re making running more fun, more exciting, and more addictive for everyone from couch-to-5k newbies to weekend joggers and marathon runners. And Zombies, Run! works anywhere - in a park, along a beach, in the city, even on treadmills!
Also: we don’t make you watch your screen while you’re running; we don’t make you change your favorite routes; and you don’t need to buy any fancy armbands or tracking devices. All you do is press a button when you start, and another button when you’re done. That’s it. We follow your lead.
Story, Game, & Fitness App: A Triple (Zombie) Threat!
You’re Runner 5. Hundreds of lives are counting on you. You've got to help your base rebuild from the ruins of civilization by collecting critical supplies while avoiding roving zombie hordes. Can you save them?
You receive orders and hear the story told through radio messages and voice recordings between your own custom playlists. Missions last around 20-30 minutes in real time and there'll be over 30 unique missions in Season 1.
You'll automatically collect items like medicine, batteries, and ammo while running, and once you’re back home, you get to assign them to different parts of your base. Who needs the vitamins more, the soldiers or the doctors? Which buildings need extra defenses? It’s up to you - and the bigger your base, the more missions you’ll have access to.
But what are the leaders of your base scheming about? How did you get there? Where did the zombies come from? There’s a deeper mystery to be uncovered, puzzles to be solved, websites to be discovered, documents to be viewed so you can learn the truth of what’s happened to the world.
Zombies, Run! records the distance, time, pace, and calories burned of all your runs, and we’re keen to add RunKeeper integration. There's also the option to hear audio notifications of for time, distance, and pace during your run. If you want to get fit while also saving the world, this is the game for you.
Why we need your support
Zombies, Run! is a pure indie game. We’re self-funding the development, art, writing, and promotion 100% from our own pockets, and we’re happy to do that because it’s a game we’ve wanted to make for a long time, and it’s real labour of love.
We want Zombies, Run! to be the best game it can possibly be, and that’s where your support will be incredibly valuable to help pay for great voice actors, better sound production facilities, exhaustive testing, and of course, making your rewards!
What we'll do with any extra funds
- Create extra couch-to-5k and marathon training mission packs
- Add data export, web integration, RunKeeper integration, and multiplayer support
For each extra $5k raised, we’ll recruit one special guest of your choice to lend their voice to a character in the game. You’ll be able to vote on who you’d like to hear, and we’ll do everything within our power to secure their talents. Imagine Nathan Fillion, Ellen McLain, or Felicia Day as zombie-killers - it could happen!
This is a mockup of our T-shirt which comes in 3 different colours on high quality fabric (think American Apparel) - it’s what we imagine Runner 5 actually wearing in the game. Even if you get turned into a zombie, people will still be able to identify you from your good-looking corpse!
T-shirts will come in a range of sizes, and in both men and women's cuts.
This is the artwork we're planning to use for our Zombies, Run! poster, which will be printed at A1 size (that's 85cm x 60cm). Very stylish, we think you'll agree.
A note about ideas
Of course we welcome your comments and suggestions on Zombies, Run! but please don't make them if you are going to claim rights in them; and please be aware that if we use them you won't be able to turn round and say that you somehow own bits of the game. Therefore by submitting comments you are agreeing that we can use them and any rights in them in any way we like.
For the $350 pledge, we create a non-player character with the name of your choosing (which can be your own name) that appears in *everyone's* game.
Your NPC will have a prominent role in the story as one of the Runners, e.g. "We've just had a report from Runner 3, [insert your name] - he's been down to the military base..." We'll also create a dossier for your character (with your input) that will be readable within the game and also on a fictional website for everyone to see. So pretty much everyone who plays the game will know who you are!
And of course, you get your name in the Survivor's Register, a copy of the game (plus extras), the chance to have your best 'zombie groan' in the game, a T-shirt, poster, a location in the game named after you, *and* the Runner's Field Guide!
Zombies, Run! will require an iPhone or iPod Touch with iOS 5 installed, meaning we’ll support the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and upcoming iPhone 5; and the 3rd generation and 4th generation iPod Touch. We’re sorry if you have an older phone, but iOS 5 just lets us make this game faster and better.
Due to popular demand, we've decided to commit to making an Android app for May 2012 (three months after the launch of the iPhone version). We know how annoying it is to have to wait for apps to be released after iPhone, so we'll do everything we can to keep the gap as short as possible, but we're only a small team so please be patient with us!
So to be clear, any pledge at $10 or above will receive an Android app.
The game will have some swearing, and unsurprisingly it’ll be a bit scary at times. If it were a movie, it’d probably be rated PG-13. It is a game about zombies, after all.
Not in the launch version, but we’re very keen to add team support so you can play with friends.
You can play Zombies, Run! anywhere; running across hills, along the beach, on a treadmill. It doesn’t even need GPS reception, since we fall back to the phone’s accelerometer if we can’t get location data. You could probably even play it while cycling, although it might sound a bit weird.
You can learn about Six to Start from the bio on the right. Our lead game designer is Adrian Hon, a keen runner who’s used pretty much every running app out there to destruction. Alex Macmillan is our lead developer and expert sound producer, Matt Wieteska is our game designer and writer, and Estee Chan is our artist and graphic designer.
Naomi Alderman is the lead writer for Zombies, Run! She was the lead writer on Perplex City, and has worked on other games with Six to Start, the BBC, and Wieden+Kennedy. Naomi's written a Doctor Who novel, Borrowed Time, and writes about games and technology for The Guardian and elsewhere.
Oh, and she has this sideline in writing literary fiction novels and short stories, she’s published in 10 countries and recognised with awards in four of them. She can write, is basically what we’re saying. She doesn’t run much, but she likes a good long walk.
Zombies, Run! works *anywhere* - the game doesn't really look at where you run, it just looks at how far and how long you run. That's why it works without GPS or on treadmills.
While we are exploring the possibility of doing some location-specific content, the game will still work perfectly fine anywhere on Earth!
