Recent updates

Our first 1.1 update is now out!

Hello everyone!

You didn't think we were going to take it easy after the game was released, did you?...

Zombies, Run! v1.1

The first free update to Zombies, Run! (and of course, ZR Advance) landed today, bringing a whole host of highly-requested improvements and bugfixes including:

  • 9 extra missions
  • Playlist shuffle
  • Run logs
  • Better volume controls
  • Switch between miles and km
  • Better playlist views and performance
  • Improved handling of audio notifications

You can get the update just by going to the App Store app on your device. And there’s plenty more coming in future updates, including:

  • Even more missions
  • Zombie chases for accelerometer users
  • Sharing runs via Facebook
  • and yet more improvements

Further down the line we also have the Beginner 5k and Interval Training packs that you will get for free, since you’re one of our beloved Kickstarter backers! And there’s a lot more in store, but we don’t want you to get too excited about them quite yet, so more details will have to wait for now...

The Merchandise

All backers in North America should have received their T-shirts by now, and we have also shipped all posters worldwide via airmail (it’s more expensive, but we know we’re late, so we’re trying to make up for it!).

As for the rest-of-world T-shirts, we just received them at our office and we’ll also be shipping those out via airmail next week. Again, sorry about the delay, but you will get them soon!

How’s the Android version coming?

We’re still on schedule for May/June. Not much more to report than that, but it’s coming along solidly. When it launches, it will come with 23 story missions (unlike v1.0 of the iOS app, which only came with 13 missions), but to begin with, it won't have all the features of the latest version of Zombies, Run! It's not an ideal situation, so we'll be putting more resources and people on this, but it takes time for us to scale up.

Zombies, Run! in the News

Along with the thousands of blogs and tweets - all of which we have read and appreciate a lot (well, the good ones, at least) - we’ve had some brilliant press in places like:

Also, there are some great blogs and communities forming around the game. Two of the best have to be:

  • Reddit’s r/runner5 - lots of great discussion and tips on how to play the game there, plus we often drop in and answer questions
  • - for all your playlist, fanfic, and gameplay needs!
  • Robin "Asaryn" Parkins did a great Zombies, Run! drawing - check it out!

And of course, we’re always answering messages on Twitter at @zombiesrungame and addressing support queries sent to, along with comments posted here on Kickstarter.

That's all - for the moment...

We have plenty more Zombies, Run! things we've been keeping under wraps lately, but we're hoping to reveal them to you in the next few weeks.

So, sit tight, stay safe and keep well,

Six to Start and Naomi Alderman

Zombies, Run! is now out on the App Store for Kickstarter backers! You should have received an email with instructions on how to get the app, but if you haven't, please check your spam folders (and if it's not there, just email us).

Some common problems:

  • If you get Error Code 1 when logging in to ZombieLink, it's probably because your device isn't connected to the internet. You need to be online to log in - but after that, you can stay offline.
  • If you had access to the beta version, you may need to log out and then log back in again to see the full list of 13 missions.

On Monday, we'll be releasing the paid-for "Zombies, Run!" game on the App Store for the public. Remember, you don't need to download this one - you should use "ZR Advance".

If you enjoy Zombies, Run!, please tell your friends - the more players we have, the more features and content we can develop! We've got a lot of updates coming out in the next few months, so this is just the start!

It's finally here. Time to run!

Everyone on the Zombies, Run! Team

It's Almost Time

Hello everyone!

The days are getting longer, the air warmer, and -

Enough chitchat - When do I get my zombies!?!!

Barring any major disasters (e.g. asteroids, zombies, Apple, etc.) we are going to launch the iOS version before the end of this month. So, even if that means 29th February - and we hope it’s sooner - that’s just over two weeks.

Just imagine - two weeks until you too can be running for your life from zombies and saving humanity. It’s been a long journey, but we’re nearly there now!

A word of warning: when we launch, you may look at the price we’re selling the app for in the store and go: “WAITASECOND, I thought you promised me $20 of value for $10! This app isn’t retailing for anything like $20!” That’s true. But this initial app release is just the start of what we have in store for you.

You’re not just getting the initial Zombies, Run! for your pledge, you’re also getting all the paid add-ons we’re developing for Season 1. We already have three planned, including:

  • Couch to 5k missions
  • Interval training missions
  • “The Lab”, a top secret set of new missions and gameplay

This means you may see the core Zombies, Run! game on sale on the App Store for a bit less than what you’ve paid - but the total cost of the game plus add-ons during Season 1 will remain above $20. We promise to look after you guys - you’ve let us make the game and kept the faith with us. If you’re really concerned just send us an email; we’re happy to talk to you.

In addition, as Kickstarter backers, you’re also getting something that’s totally exclusive - the ability to use your ZombieLink login to switch between our iOS and upcoming Android client for free. Other users will have to buy the app separately for each platform, but your pre-order means that if you have an iPhone now but later switch to the Android, you won’t need to pay again. Hells yeah.

Will it have X feature?

We’re really happy with the set of features we’ve managed to include in the launch version of Zombies, Run! but we also have a long list of things we’d like to add and improve in future versions. So, rest assured, we’re in this for the long haul. The game will just keep getting better and better as we add more polish and features - and of course, you’ll get this all for free.

We can give you no better proof that it'll be fun at launch than the fact that our beta testers (using a limited version of the game with just two missions) have said things like:

  • Evaded all #zombies mobs :-) One of my best sprint ever; This app works!
  • This game will make you sweat. Perfect junction between game design and run tracker.
  • Just tried @zombiesrungame and for the first time in my life I feel truly alive.

How will I get the iOS app?

It’s super-simple. You’ll download “ZR Advance” from the App Store (it’s free), enter your ZombieLink email and password, and that’ll unlock all the content. Most of you aren’t on ZombieLink yet, but we’ll send out an invitation closer to the time so you can set (or reset) your password.

But don’t worry about this for the moment - we’ll send out another email with clear instructions when the app is ready.

What about Android users, eh? You hate us, right?

We are moving full steam ahead and are still on track for a Spring release, with a beta release in May or earlier. We’re an indie dev, so we only have two full time developers working on this project. Right now, one is working on iOS, and the other is on Android, so there’s no question of us neglecting Android users!

OK, now you can talk about other stuff...

Thanks! So, a quick round-up:

  • We are into full swing in production of the T-shirts, and they should be going out later this month.
  • We have also received all the posters, and they’ll be going out this month or next month (see below for a photo of both, modelled by Alex, our developer in the T-shirt, and Matt, our audio director with the poster)
  • Our celebrity voice casting is still on hold, but will resume again when the game has launched (partly because that’ll make it more likely for them to return our calls!)
  • We’re in the early stages of scripting the Couch to 5k and Interval Training add-ons.
  • We’re going to be at SXSW, so if you’re around, drop us an email or a tweet @zombiesrungame - There May Be Swag!

We’re almost there! Stay safe and keep well,

Six to Start and Naomi Alderman

Warming up

Hello all!

Things are moving fast here, so we'll keep this update short and sweet.

ZR Advance is live!

We are launching ZR Advance ("the app formerly known as beta") today! It sailed through Apple's approval process with nary an issue and everyone who's pledged $45 (i.e. LOOKOUT level and above) should be receiving an email with instructions shortly.

Of course, you can all download the app - it's free on the App Store - but only people who bought beta access will be able to log in and play the missions.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: This is not the final version of the app. The final version will have way more stuff and will look much, much nicer. In fact, the version we have in our office already looks way nicer (full Retina graphics, proper tutorial, better UI, etc etc.). So don't panic.

T-shirts and posters are being made!

Yep. As you'll have noticed, we opted for the Gildan T-shirts, for the greater good. We'll keep you updated on when they'll be shipped out, which shouldn't be too long from now.

If you're interested in this sort of thing, out of all the orders we've had, about 70% are from the US, then Canada, Australia, and the UK all have around 7% each, with the remaining orders from Austria, Israel, Korea, Mexico, Vietnam, Norway...

The full game: Late February

Of course, we want to release the game as soon as we can, but we've decided to aim for a late February release while still also getting as many features into the game as possible - and Kickstarter backers (i.e. you guys) will get the game at least a few days earlier than everyone else, via ZR Advance.

Barring disaster or an actual zombie apocalypse, though, we are absolutely committed to launching in February!

Action stations

We're hoping that today's release of ZR Advance will provide some useful feedback and data on how people play the game, and that we don't find too many bugs. So it's all systems go for us right now - we're on our final sprint to release!

Stay safe and run fast,

Six to Start and Naomi Alderman
