Professor Pugnacious' Portfolio of Perils, Pugilism, and Perfidy-the Card Game of Victorian Combat pits Steampunk Heroes against Gothic Horrors in a fight to be the greatest monster hunter in the world-both by defeating your Adversaries, the creatures themselves, and by foiling your rivals-the other players.
You take on the role of one of Professor Pugnacious' prize pupils. You and your rivals set out not merely to rid the world of the horrors that infect it, but to do so better than anyone else - whether that means sabotaging your classmate's equipment, stealing another's invention idea, or even forming alliances and working together to foil a more powerful rival.
Professor Pugnacious is a game for 2-4 players.
Turns are taken simultaneously, and have four phases: Play Cards, Buy Cards, Combat, and Recovery. Cards give you Skill, which you use to buy cards; Fight, which you use to defeat adversaries; Failure, which you use to foil the other players' plans; Draw, which gives you more cards, and a whole host of special abilities.
On a turn, you'll play cards, use their special abilities, buy cards, pick an Adversary to fight, negotiate how to distribute Failure with your rival players, and then reap the reward for winning or suffer the penalty for losing your fight. The Card Ring will rotate once, and the next turn will begin.
If you donate at least $1, then you can download a print-and-play copy of the cards, and play the entire, complete game right now! We trust that if you do you'll enjoy it enough to come back and get the complete version, with all of the art, design, and high-quality cards.
"The 'Card Ring' is brilliant! This mechanic is the gem of your design, and one I really like a lot. The choices one must make from their own queue, coupled with the impact of 'shifting' the cards, is very well done" - Tox, Crits Happen
Professor Pugnacious has been awarded the Springboard Seal of Quality.
We're confident you'll love Professor Pugnacious because of the innovative mechanics, the immersive theme, and the extensive playtesting it's undergone.
The mechanics were designed from the ground up to fill a space we saw lacking among deckbuilding games. We wanted something tactical - you can't just plan out a grand strategy at the beginning, you have to make decisions every turn - fast paced - turns are taken simultaneously, so there's nearly no waiting - and interactive - you can manipulate the Card Ring, which is where people buy their cards from, and you can assign Failure, so your opponents lose their fights. This means you need to make decisions that take into account what kinds of decks other people are building, and leads to a lot of political intrigue, as players bargain and backstab to avoid being made to fail and to trick and trap opponents.
The theme theme and style - well, just look at them. Andrea's really put together something incredible. It's not just the card art: the design of the cards and the box all pull you in to this strange world of Victoriana. But that's not all! Each copy of the game will come with an mp3 of theme music composed by Brent Hengeveld. Scan the code, get it on your phone, and play it in the background during your game for an incredibly immersive experience. Oh what the heck, have it for free now. Enjoy his other music as well.
Here's some examples of the cards you can buy:
If you're worried about the legibility of the cards, don't be-we're going to get a printed proof of the game before yours gets printed, and if the design doesn't work, we will edit it until it does. We already have ideas in case changes become necessary.
Here are some enemies you can fight:
This game has been very extensively playtested. Hundreds of man-hours, scores of games, dozens of playtesters on multiple continents have all ensured, through countless revisions, changes, major overhauls, and minor tweaks, that this game will be as good as it can be. Major thanks go out to former pro Magic: The Gathering player Zvi Mowshowitz, whose advice and assistance have been invaluable, and led to major changes to how trashing and enemies are designed.
Here's one example of a minor change we've made: when you get a reward for killing a monster, that comes into effect on the next turn. Some players were finding it difficult to remember all of the effects, so now we have these handsome tokens to help everyone remember.
If you donate at least $1 now, you can get access to a complete print and play copy of the cards, meaning you could be playing the game in just a few minutes if you want to. We're so confident you'll love the game once you play it that we expect you to come back and donate enough to get the actual physical copy of the game, with all the gorgeous art intact.
In addition, for $5 each on top of any other donation, you can get these mini-expansions. Or for $20, you can get all five!

Treachery! The first expansion to Professor Pugnacious. The theme is Failure. This introduces two new mechanics: Stealth cards, which aren't revealed until after combat targets have been assigned, and the first Class, the Traitor, who give special abilities and alternate win conditions. Abandon all pretense of teamwork, join up with the horrors, and destroy your rivals! Includes a new Finale: the Rival Professor.
Locomotion! The second expansion to Professor Pugnacious. The theme is the Card Ring. This introduces two new mechanics: Settings and Locations. Thomas Eliot has been playing boardgames and “improving” them since he was 1d6 years old. He’d always dreamed of becoming a board game designer, but didn’t realize that he actually could make that happen until last year. Businessweek called him a “Guardian of the Apocalypse“, which has nothing to do with boardgames, but he can’t resist bringing it up.
Andrea Renaisse is a forty-something artist from Vancouver, Washington. Raised in the Pacific Northwest, she lives in a 1935-never-gonna-get-fixed-up-cause-stuff-keeps-breakin house with her companion, two dogs, a cat, and one very bratty beagle who thinks she is a daughter. Andrea has a B.F.A. from Pacific Northwest College of Art and a M.Ed. from Central Washington University. Currently she operates her family advertising business, but her spare time, if there is any, revolves around doing art and playing video games like she is a teenager.

A recent graduate of the University of Southern California's SMPTV program (Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television), he is available to hire to write the soundtrack to your next hit game or billion dollar blockbuster film, or whatever else pays the bills. His hobby is trying to build a time machine so he can be a contemporary of John Williams.

Risks and challenges
The rules of the game and all of the cards are already written, playtested, and ready to print. That means the potential problems can come from one of three areas: art, manufacturing, and shipping. Something could happen to Andrea, the artist - she could be struck by an automobile, or kidnapped by one of her nefarious nemeses, or be caught in some other cataclysmic catastrophe in which case we would be forced to find a new artist to finish the Project. The manufacturer, Panda Games, could suffer a disaster, in which case we would use a backup. The most realistic failure is that we underestimated the cost of shipping, in which case hopefully the campaign has raised enough to cover it anyways. Otherwise it looks like oh well, it'll be coming out of our pockets. No matter what happens, we will get you your game! And keep in mind, when you donate any amount of money you'll get a print and play copy of the game and the mp3, so there's nothing that can stop that (on the off chance that enough people donate that the bandwidth on our website isn't enough to handle the downloads, we'll host them elsewhere).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
