About this project
ABOUT HOOD BATTLE:
Let the battle begin.
Hood Battles is separating the “hood frauds” from the “hood gods” and putting the best hip-hop lyricists out to the world. There are no pretenders and no bleep-outs, just the most raw subject matter the streets have. And, since this is a true underground battle, it’s not just about mic skills. We want to know: do the contestants get down for their hood and do their hoods get down for them? The entries with the realest hood experiences will be the ones to make it onto the competition, and the judges can spot a fake.
Each week Hood Battle will pit eight unknown artists against each other to determine which one moves on to the final rounds. After their introduction, members of the judges will go over a few rules and introduce the first match up. The live DJ will spin the record for the combatants to compete and get judged. From time to time a guest artist, like Snoop Dogg or T-Pain, will stop in to assist the judges in determining who’s got the goods and who's got to go. The winners will compete for the title of “Block Boss” who will receive a digitally distributed Single Release Package for their single.
WHO IS BEHIND HOOD BATTLE?
Hood Battle is co-created by Mike Vannelli and Alex Taber. They run Six Lane Highway, a very popular and respected multimedia production company. Six Lane Highway is responsible for a lot of digital comedy short and even more rap and hip-hop videos featuring such artists as the Academy Award winning Three 6 Mafia.
How is this project funded? What's the funding for?
Making a multi-season web series project can be surprisingly expensive. There are numerous costs involved with doing a project legitimately, including production insurance, permits, salaries, paperwork, etc. In addition, the scale of the project means we'll have to hire on additional personnel, such as editors and visual artists.
Over the last year and a half of making special effects laden videos, we've learned to be flexible and resourceful with our budgets. Every cent raised for this project is going into the production, so the more we raise, the bigger we can go with this project.
Why a Web Series?
We strongly believe the foundations for the future of digitally distributed content will be laid by web series. The web series format is uncharted territory, and we want to explore it.
What's the status of the production?
Hood Battle is currently in pre-production. Production is scheduled to start somewhere before the end of 2011, with the project finishing early 2012.
