About this project
In Yomi you get to play a fighting game with cards. There are 20 different decks, each one representing a different character, each one with their own moves and special abilities. The combo system is pretty fun and lets you string together moves, just like in a fighting game.
As a tournament Street Fighter player and lead designer of Street Fighter HD Remix, I loved the interesting gameplay situations and mindgames that came up, but I knew lots of people would never experience them because of the dexterity requirements. The Yomi card game translates those mindgames into a form everyone can enjoy. It's more than just mindgames though: it's a strategy game involving hand management and combos that's been tuned for years for tournament play. Plus it's pretty easy to learn for casual play too.
- Always play with full-powered decks—always fair competition
- A strategy card game with with a high skill-ceiling
- Fantastic art and visuals
- Now with 2v2 Team Battle mode
- Now with a solo mode
- Years of tournaments have helped hone the balance (reference)
The 20 character decks in Yomi will be released over a period of several MONTHS, starting with the 4 base set characters in the "Round 1" box and the 4 expansion characters in the "Round 2" box. For kickstarter backers only though, you can get all 20 decks ahead of the normal release schedule. We'll print them just for you!
Yomi Round 1 & Round 2
- Each comes with 4 character decks
- Round 1 characters: Grave, Jaina, Midori, Setsuki
- Round 2 characters: Quince, Onimaru, Bal-Bas-Beta, Troq
- 54 card main decks + 1 character card each
- Each character has a reference card listing all stats and abilities
- Rules card (this comes to 57 cards total per deck)
- STRETCH GOAL. Game board to track life totals depicting a fighting scene (different scene for Round 1 and Round 2)
- STRETCH GOAL. Knockdown token to track who is knocked down
12 More Decks
The 6 revised base characters and 6 revised expansion characters will be sold individually in a staggered release over the course of several months after the Round 1 & Round 2 boxes ship. You can get all 12 through this kickstarter though, without extra months of waiting.
(Rotate the box around in 3D here.)
EX Powerup Expansion
- "EX" Character cards for all *10* base set decks. Each character gets a new, overpowered character card as well 4 copies of a new rank of face cards called Destiny cards. Lum gets a special item side deck, too. (More characters's EX cards will be added from stretch goals.)
- To play an EX character: swap your character card for the powerful (gold) EX version, add 4 copies of the new Destiny face cards to your deck, and you can Power UP for ANY cards from your draw deck, not just Aces. (You can still Power UP for Aces from your discard pile.
- Comes with a special, oversized Dragon Card. Master Menelker in his Deathstrike Dragon form, allowing for a unique 2v1 mode.
- The box is designed to hold all 20 decks for easy storage
- The inside of the box has a character select screen like in a fighting game that shows where to put each deck
Each character has a character card and a deck with poker values. That makes it easy to learn how many of each move you have. Numbered cards are normal moves, face cards are special moves, and Aces are super moves.
Play your combat card face down, at the same time as your opponent. Make sure the move you want to do is toward the opponent.
Reveal your combat cards simultaneously.

Character cards get a huge visual upgrade:
All ability boxes have a new timing tag in the upper right corner to let you know when they can trigger. Abilities are generally reworded to be shorter too. And prettier!
Reference cards. Every deck comes with a card showing every stat in the entire deck, as well as every ability.
Art tweaks. Little touches here and there.
Game balance. A bunch of little things adjusted. Read a full article here about some of the process.
Several small rule changes. Normal attacks now draw a card when they're blocked or win combat. There's a handcap of 12 cards now. Whenever you're both knocked down at the same time, just cancel the knockdown effect. You can no longer heal to above your maximum HP. And when you draw the last card of your deck, it's time out and the winner is the player with the most HP.
New 2v2 mode. Wow! It's pretty nuts and you can actually play it right now with the original Yomi decks if you want.
Help spread the word so everyone gets more stuff. Tell some board gamers, fighting game players, or anyone else who likes competitive games.

Shipping is expensive. We've calculated the cost to ship this game to backers around the world and we're subsidizing that to help keep your costs down. The cost to ship Yomi Round 1or Round 2 to backers in the USA is $6.68. Sirlin Games is covering $6.68 of the shipping cost for ALL backers around the world at that pledge level, and there's more shipping subsidy at the higher pledge levels.
All pledge levels for US backers includes shipping. For international backers, we're passing along the same savings on shipping. Simply check the chart below, find your destination group, then follow the line to see you total pledge amount.
To keep the shipping costs as low as possible, Game Salute will ship packages via a variety of shipping services depending on your specific location. They use USPS, FedEx, UPS, and DHL. You will be responsible for any import fees, brokerage or delivery surcharges, or applicable taxes that may be levied after we have shipped your package.

Thanks to your support I can continue to publish great games. I focus on games that still stand up after thousands of plays, and that means a lot of time goes into each one. It was 6 years from the first prototype of Yomi until it's release at the beginning of 2011, and these expansion characters have been in the works for years as well. It’s only possible to keep doing such careful design because so many of you have appreciated the value that creates, and for that I’m extremely grateful.
I hope you’ll back Yomi by clicking the “Back This Project” button at the top of the page, and let other people know about it so we can meet our stretch goals. Tell them to follow Sirlin Games on Facebook for more updates.
Thanks again for supporting my ability to make games such as Yomi. Our success here will help fund Codex as well.

Risks and challenges
The game is nearly print ready and I've been through this process several times before. The main risks are unexpected delays during manufacturing or shipping. I've tried to schedule enough time to cover this, and Puzzle Strike's kickstarter and Pandante's kickstarter did ship on time, but you never know. I think the risks on handling order processing and shipping in a timely manner are low because Game Salute is handling that and they have done it many, many times before.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes. Round 1 and Round 2 come with those boards. Pledge levels with 10 decks are really Round 1 (or Round 2) + 6 single decks in tuckboxes that you're getting months ahead of the regular release. In other words, at every pledge level over $40 you get a life tracking board, and at every level above $200 you get both boards.
Yes, lots of reasons not to get them! These are *only* the set of cards with gameplay changes.
--The new cards have differently formatted ability boxes. Now there's a timing tag in the upper right like "Draw Phase" that your old cards won't have, so that won't match.
--There's now a "normal draw rule." The help text of the new cards says to draw when your normal attack is blocked or wins combat. Your old cards won't say the right help text, but the new ones will.
--Does not include art tweaks.
--Does not include reworded abilities (which is basically ALL abilities). The new ones are shorter and more concise, partly due to the new timing tags.
--Does not include the stat reference cards.
--Your old tuckboxes probably can't fit the extra EX cards inside, if you choose to get those, but the new tuckboxes can.
As players, we really prefer a fresh new set that's all updated. You can use these v1 gameplay-changed cards as a last resort to get to the latest balance if you are ok some mismatches and not having the same level polish
No. It would have to be much bigger if it did, and that increases manufacturing cost and shipping cost. Most players have said they don't want sleeves, so it would quite an inconvenience to them to increase box size and cost. Furthermore, good sleeves are expensive, and would cost about half as much as the decks they are protecting. Many Yomi players have played with their cards for years without sleeves, and said that if any particular deck did get damaged, buying it for $10 would be cheaper in the end. Note that 12 decks outside of Round 1 and Round 2 will be available individually at that price.
Also remember that Yomi cards are not like CCG cards. They are higher quality and have a protective coating. That said, if you still want to sleeve your cards, go ahead! You could try using the EX Power up box and the original Yomi Complete Edition box to hold them all.
