About this project
Last update: We'll be rebooting the Pandante kickstarter in a way that hopefully meets your needs better. You loved the chips, and asked for a lower cost version so let's do it. Follow us on Facebook in the meantime and we'll be back soon!
Update 3: DIAMOND chip stretch goal!
Update 2: Gambling Panda Levels 2B and 3B added. They both have the special Yomi 2-packs, and 3B also has the fancy poker deck.
Update 1: print-and-play version now available here.
When I saw how the Pandas gambled, I had to bring it over and share it with all of you. Everything about it is familiar, yet different. The cards are oversized to fit their paws. It's sort of like Texas Hold 'Em poker, but you don't have to know anything about that to play it. The whole game centers around constantly lying, which makes it a lot of fun. While they have a way of playing it for real money, they also have a way that makes for a great social or family game for 2 - 6 players.
- No player elimination
- You don't have to fold all the time, like you do in Human Poker
- A few special abilities really spice it up
- A gold fairy gives you money if you really need it, but then you have to frolic with the fairy for a while.
- It's actually fun to play for its own sake, when no real money is on the line. The Pandas are laughing and joking the whole way through!
- You can also play it with real money...if you're Panda enough!
How to Play
Basic or Luxury
Both the basic and luxury versions of Pandante have the same gameplay, it's just a question of STYLE.
The basic version includes 1 deck of oversized Pandante cards, 6 boards, and a rulebook. Here's some Pandante cards:
Here's the whole deck:
and here's the board where you place your bets:
and here's what happens to liars:
The highest honor in Pandante is to win a hand by lying. That means no one called you out on it, and you somehow got away with it. When that happens, you can reveal your cards to gloat, and you get one of the six PANDA LORDS to watch over you, as a reward.
The luxury version includes all that plus a full set of high-end, custom poker chips. These aren't plastic, or composite with a metal disc in the center, or cheap clay. They're high quality ceramic casino chips. You get 240 ceramic chips in 3 denominations. Poker chips often look like gaudy clown money, but these are simple, elegant, and classy:
...and here's those graphics again if we reach the DIAMOND chip stretch goal!
Pandante & Poker in one set. These poker chips are so awesome that you might want to play actual poker with them. (Why not just play Pandante though?) That's why the luxury set also includes a custom poker deck.
The poker deck is crafted in the same minimal, elegant graphic style as the rest of Pandante. It's oversized and for some reason contains an extra rank of face cards, called Wizards. What's up with that?
The luxury set also includes a good quality dealer button, and a sweet box to hold it all. The box has a magnetic lid to keep it closed without adding any distracting, inelegant pieces to the outside.
All the beautiful, minimal graphic design of Pandante was created by European designer Hectore Blivand (@blivand). Blivand is a high fashion designer who likes to remove all the elements of a design that he can without hurting the functionality, and then to remove some more. I think that really shows with his work on Pandante.
Here's a rundown of the rewards you get for various pledge levels. Each level gets the lower level rewards too, of course. Level 1 - 5 Pandas get the basic game, plus:
3 Poker Chips. Get a sample of the clay poker chips. You can use them as card weights to keep your cards from blowing away, just like the Pro Pandas.
Poster. You can add the basic poster, which explains what Pandante is, but only buyers of the Luxury set can get the Luxury poster. It's that exclusive.
5x7" Prints of Panda Lords. These 5x7" art prints commemorate the six famous Panda Lords. Great for framing, limited edition.
Fancy Poker deck. This is the same special poker deck that comes with the Luxury version of Pandante, in matching minimal graphic style. Here's what all the cards look like:
$45,000: Dealer button. The basic version of the game will come with a dealer button too. It will have the same graphic design as the luxury version's dealer button, and the material is a thick cardboard disc, similar to a huge 2.5" diameter Puzzle Strike chip.
$50,000: $50 off any Sirlin Games. Luxury set backers will get a discount code for $50 any order at www.sirlingames.com. Use it for holiday gifts for a friend or for yourself.
$60,000: Alternate challenge card. To challenge a lie, you throw down your iconic "!" card. The back of the card has all the rules for challenges. For this stretch goal, Kickstarter supporters only will get an alternate set of "!" cards that only have a "." on the back. It's more elegant that way.
$75,000: DIAMOND chips. The luxury version will include 60 DIAMOND chips, a 33% increase in denominations! The diamond chips are great to have for the real money gambling mode, and they also make this an even better human poker set. (Chip count will be: 60 white chips, 60 red, 60 black, 60 blue diamond.)
$90,000: Leatherette box. The luxury version's box is upgraded to a leatherette finish.
Where's Your Money Going
Your money is going only towards a *portion* of manufacturing of the game. All the design, development, testing, and artwork is already done. The main challenge is getting enough backing to make the luxury version of Pandante a reality.
Want more detail? Here's exactly how the game works:
Shipping is expensive. We've calculated the cost to ship this game to backers around the world and we're subsidizing that to help keep your costs down. The cost to ship the basic game to backers in the USA is $9.69. Sirlin Games is covering $9.69 of the shipping cost for ALL backers around the world at the basic pledge level, and there's more shipping subsidy at the higher pledge levels.
All pledge levels for US backers includes shipping. For international backers, we're passing along the same savings on shipping. Simply check the chart below, find your destination group, then follow the line to see you total pledge amount.
To keep the shipping costs as low as possible, Game Salute will ship packages via a variety of shipping services depending on your specific location. They use USPS, FedEx, UPS, and DHL. You will be responsible for any import fees, brokerage or delivery surcharges, or applicable taxes that may be levied after we have shipped your package.
Pandante will be available locally all around the world through friendly local game stores that participate in the Game Salute Select Stores system. Pandante will also be available online through www.sirlingames.com.
You can use GameStoreLocator.com to find a Game Salute Select Store near you. If your favorite store is not on our Select Stores list, be sure to ask them to sign up today at GameSalute.com/SelectStoreSignUp .
We have special Preview Nights bundles available for local stores. These bundles provide retailer pricing, free shipping with minimum order, complimentary demo copies, and more. Contact James Takenaka at Sales@GameSalute.com or 1-800-459-5516 to pre-order Pandante now.
A prototype of the basic version is available to board and card game reviewers and bloggers. While the component quality of the prototype is not necessarily representative of the shipping version, the gameplay is identical.
Sirlin is also available for podcast, blog, newspaper, or television interviews. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss media opportunities.
Thanks for Playing!
And now it's time to get *your* support. Choose a reward and make your pledge now. The Pandas are happy to have your company.
Risks and challenges
The game is nearly print ready and I've been through this process several times before. The main risks are unexpected delays during manufacturing or shipping. I've tried to schedule enough time to cover this, and Puzzle Strike's kickstarter did ship on time, but you never know. I think the risks on handling order processing and shipping in a timely manner are low because Game Salute is handling that and they have done it many, many times before.
Although I have overseen manufacturing of several games, the poker chips are a new item. The samples and the print process look good, so I expect this to go well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
