A smack in the head with a flying sinker on his boat was what it took to bring about a "eureka moment" for Nelson man Darren Hodgson.
Nine months later he has launched his invention, Sinkerlock - and first indications are that he has found a hole in the recreational fishing market that was just waiting to be filled.
The first official launch was at Hutchwilko Boat Show last year in Auckland. In the four days we sold over one thousand Sinkerlocks. Customer feedback was amazing with story after story of how frustrating a problem this has been for so many anglers.
We knew that there was no real solution to the problem. The amount of damaged rods and reels due to swinging tackle is enormous.
It wasn't until its launch that we heard first hand from fisherwomen and -men of the boat and motor damages let alone the personal injury stories.
Most common were hooks in hands.
SinkerLock is a simple yet effective solution to an age old problem.
Little more than a week after our first show SinkerLocks were already for sale in outdoors businesses across Nelson, national chains are stocking and we are already marketing them across Australia.
A simple idea not unlike the butterfly clip used to hold up hair, the SinkerLock locks on to the upper grip of a fishing rod and holds the sinker or lure securely, stopping it from bouncing around when being transported.
After coming up with the snapper-themed design himself Darren employed Christchurch business Action Plastics to do the manufacturing, using tough plastic and stainless steel springs.
SinkerLock has a number of advantages including that it allows the trace to be retained, prevents damage to the rod and is easy to deploy.
It is ideal for rebaiting. One of the problems with rebaiting is that, especially for kids, when they wind up. They focus on the hook and reach out for it to rebait but hooks and hands don't mix. Teach kids and adults to reach for the sinker. Pop it into the SinkerLock and your hooks are contained from swinging.
SinkerLock is a revolutionary new product designed for the recreational fishing industry. It simply keeps the sinker safely attached to the rod.
Sinkerlock is a simple to use, tough product that eliminates problems of damaged fishing rods, reels, boats and vehicles and most importantly it prevents personal injury from swinging hooks and sinkers.
SinkerLock is disruptive technology, in that it changes the way we have done things for the last 100 years.

Risks and challenges
Since its launch SinkerLock has proven to be a hit.
Sales in New Zealand and Australia have paid for its design and mould costs within a year. US Patent has been applied for and is pending !
Our goal is now to reach the rest of the globe and have this nifty little product for sale on your sports and fishing store shelves.
Unfortunately this costs money.
The first production mould has had over 20,000 units produced and will still be kept for the Australasian market.
What do we need the money for ?
We need to produce a new mould for mass production which can cost in the tens of thousands as some of you may know.
Once this is made we have also budgeted for a marketing campaign for the US, Europe and other countries with the help of Kickstarter.
This along with Tradeshow launches including ICAST can make this happen. We will produce an Infomercial and need to invest in new packaging.
More than anything we need your support to "tackle" the rest of the world and give every fishermen and -women the opportunity to buy a SinkerLock and keep safe in future !!
