About

As a photographer, I am always challenging myself to come up with innovative ideas and creatives that provoke the mind into deep thought. Inspiration for this project hit while I was on my way into work on the MBTA. An older woman caught my eye as she was applying makeup at 5:30 AM and I began to wonder about capturing one’s natural beauty in its pure essence, candid and natural.

Thus, the no makeup series was born. To say it was difficult to ask women to participate in such an exposed project would be an understatement, as it was and still remains a challenge. The first to take the challenge was my colleague/friend, Lilliana Jimenez, as she trusted my vision and its trajectory.

I don’t like makeup and its everyday usage in our culture. When I was younger, having a mother who was a makeup artist made it seem unavoidable. I used to feel like I needed to wear it to get noticed, to “fit in.” -Gina Manning

The project was originally to be a celebration of beauty that was meant to be showcased online; an ensemble of five to ten young ladies discussing their feelings towards makeup, accompanied by a candid, makeup free shot. However, as I gained more local exposure,I was convinced to turn this online showcase into a celebration of women's natural beauty in the form of a book.

Throughout the project, I have had the pleasure of working with over 40 women of different ages and ethnicities, as well as different occupations. Shae Rose, a Boston based singer who recently opened up for Macy Gray, is a strong advocate for females and showcasing their natural beauty. I asked if Miss Rose would participate in this project and she was more than thrilled to help out, as well as donate her latest CD entitled, "Little Warrior", (http://www.shearose.com/music/) as part of the rewards.

"I have tired eyes. Because of this, I like to wear a small amount of make-up to conceal the lack of sleep; it makes me appear slightly more vibrant in my pale skin. I enjoy a natural look so a minimal amount (of make-up) is all that I need" -Sofija

Printing the book is the next process. The paper will be a thin stock paper with either a matte or glossy coating. The size of this book, 60 to 70 pages, will be 10' X 10' and most images will be in black and white with limited color images. The goal is to make anywhere from 1000 to 1500 books with your help. I aspire to grow this book into a series that can free women from the binds of artificiality, and show that beauty is more than over the counter purchases; it is a natural possession that should be embraced.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I hope you can lend a hand and help fund this book.

Risks and challenges

There have been many hurdles along the way, from choosing the paper quality to ensuring that each picture chosen conveys a positive message to society about a women’s self-image. This is a piece that not only means something to me, but that will hopefully allow for all to shed the masks that we place on ourselves for the sake of beauty and be comfortable in with their own natural state.
