Simon Joyner Records New Double Album
I’m nearing completion but I'm looking for backers to help fund the final recording, mixing and manufacturing expenses for my thirteenth proper full-length album. The new album is being recorded all-analog in my south Omaha warehouse ad hoc studio on a borrowed 16 track, 1” reel to reel machine and will be mixed at ARC Studio soon.
The record you're backing is experimental and sprawling, featuring some avant/psych/noise damage and songs wrestling with the ghosts of Alex Chilton, Skip Spence, and Jackson C. Frank, among other persistent influences. We’ve left in more hiss and ambient sounds and approached the record in the spirit of some of my early albums in the sense that we set up shop in a non-studio environment and took our time, working on the record on the weekends over a period of a few months. My new band features cello and violin, pedal steel guitar, organ and piano, multiple acoustic and electric guitars, Moog synthesizer, drums, percussion and bells, bass (bowed and electric), celesta, vibes, and other sounds. The album is not yet titled.Given the current environment, I feel this could be my last opportunity to do a grand, song cycle in the spirit of double album favorites like the White Album, Blonde on Blonde, Fly, Tago Mago, Daydream Nation, Tusk, Exile on Main Street, and Harsh 70’s Reality. Written, recorded, and sequenced as a double album, it will be released vinyl-only (with a download) and we are aiming for a Summer 2012 release date. Right now the expenses are all on battered and bruised credit cards and this project can’t move forward without real assistance.
I’ve been releasing records since 1992 so this new double album will be my 20th anniversary project. I have been fortunate that there have always been healthy independent labels willing and able to do the risky, dirty work of releasing one of my records. But times have changed, the future is now, and the music industry is looking for its face in a foggy mirror. Regardless, I believe the tangible, physical thing, the album itself as art object, is what keeps songwriting and recording exciting for me. Digital downloads are useful but an album is much more than just a copy or an assortment of the recorded songs.
This record will be self-released, available via mail order directly from me, as well as being distributed through traditional channels with the assistance of my friends at Ba-Da-Bing Records. It will also be carried by Team Love, who graciously released my last record, Out Into the Snow. I’ve set my goal here below the actual recording and manufacturing costs but if I can reach it, I will have the financial push needed to make sure we finish up and can manufacture. If I am fortunate enough to exceed the actual recording and manufacturing costs through this campaign, I will put additional funds toward some much needed recording equipment, equipment repairs and organizing some domestic and international tours to support the album in the new year. Thank you for backing this project.
As you can see to the right (and see update #2 for photos), I've come up with a variety of options for backers interested in participating in getting this record completed and manufactured. If there is a combination of rewards you'd like to see, feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll see if it can be added. Thank you!
Mark your calendars
This campaign will end at 9pm (cst) on February 19th so please consider backing it now if you can or spreading the word about it to those who might, if you cannot. Regardless, thank you for taking the time to read about the new album.
