Before you hear about the kidsmap from us, see what kids have to say:
This is the first interactive analog map for kids, combining beautiful illustrated stickers with fun flash cards that guide kids through a world of animals, places and cultures.
It can be used as a simple sticker map, or combined with our flash cards to create a full-on geography game!
This is where the exploring starts! We begin with a super simple - but beautiful - map base, showing continents, deserts, and major mountain ranges. There’s plenty to explore, but not so much that it’s overwhelming.
The stickers are what make this map awesome - because this is where you come in! Our backers (you!) will vote on which sweet discoveries that become one of the 140 stickers on our map (final number of stickers can slightly change due to printing setup), from natural wonders like the Grand Canyon, to the animals that roam the Serengeti.
It's a Map! It's a Game! Our Awesome Cards Make It Both!
With our companion quiz cards - available in English and German - we've created a series of simple, fun exploration games to keep you and your kids playing for hours.
You get the sense that this is how early explorers felt, pulling their maps down from the wall and charting their next expedition into the unknown!
We've teamed up with some professional game designers to create a few engaging geography games that can be played with a group or one-on-one.
We can’t make this map alone. We’ve made a few stickers to test the maps with kids and parents, but we don’t just want a map of our favorite things. We want to hear from you! Your ideas will be illustrated and become part of the kidsmap!
What was that one thing you learned about as a kid that sparked your desire to travel? What would you have loved to know about when you were little?
We took our maps back to the drawing board for the kidsmap - from simplified illustrations to different sticker types and levels of interactivity.
We've put a ton of thought into this map, and want to tell you a bit more about the materials used:
We've also gone the extra mile to get this map certified for child safety by an independent lab in Germany. As always, our kidsmap will be Made in Germany of the best available materials.
The kidsmap is fun to play and even though kids won't recognize it, they will learn a lot about our beautiful planet, including:
- Basic geography like continents, deserts, mountain ranges, and ecosystems
- Highlights of each continent (and some lesser known treasures)
- Habitats of animals
- Location and significance of monuments
- A little history
- And, of course, how sweet it'll be to visit all these newly discovered places!
We have opted to get this map certified as an expression of our commitment to making our products safe for your children. However, each country has unique labeling requirements and testing procedures. Because of the variety of requirements, we are only able to ship to addresses located in the following countries (which we hope will cover most of our prospective backers). Please only pledge if your shipping address is located in one of the countries below. If we have to cancel your order after the close of the campaign, we will refund 75% of your pledge (which accounts for Kickstarter, Amazon and all our fees, which we can’t reverse).
- European Union member countries
- United States
- Hong Kong
We're not newcomers to mapmaking. We can honestly say we've sourced the world's best materials for this map, and we're proud of the product we're creating (and so jazzed to make it with you!).
In printing, the minimum order quantities are fairly high, which makes a high initial investment when launching any new product. All maps are made in Germany and we pride ourselves only using the highest quality materials and printers. Once you hold your map in your hands, you will see what we mean.
We love our planet so we try to produce as little waste as possible. We use paper instead of plastic in all our packaging, and all of our tubes, stickers, and labels are custom-made for our maps and eco-friendly.
Let's get this voyage underway! We promise to work just as hard as last time!
Risks and challenges
Awesome Maps has made and shipped thousands of maps, and we already have a successful Kickstarter campaign under our belt, fully delivered with only a few weeks of delay. We know what it takes, how long it takes and we know how to get it done.
There are, however, some possible risks:
You've probably figured out by now that this map contains small parts, but for clarity: Warning! Choking Hazard! Not for children under 3 years.
Supplies: We have skimmed through 50+ printing and sticker materials and found only one sticker that we really love. If our supplier were to go out of business, we'd have a problem. But, one must ask, could a company making such awesome stickers really go out of business? If so, we've already secured the right to purchase enough sheets to deliver this campaign's rewards - so it shouldn't pose a problem.
Certification: Certification is tough, but we think it's important that you know your kids are safe playing with our products. To get that final seal of approval, we need to provide the certification agencies with a FINAL product (no samples), which means that if the final product fails to pass testing, we have to reprint EVERYTHING, delaying delivery.
We've done our homework and have guarantees from our printer. If the worst happens, we'll print everything again!
Fulfillment Troubles: No such thing! Lars and I personally rolled and packed over 3,000 maps for our last campaign. It took us 2 weeks of full time work, but we made it happen. We love our maps, and we want them in your hands and on your walls!
With our last campaign we did find that a few wayward maps got lost on the way to their loving homes. We experienced delivery issues with < 1% of shipments, and as of now we've rectified (almost) every issue.
Gamma-Ray Burst: Gamma-ray bursts from near-Earth supernova are an ever-present threat, to life on this planet and to our project. Among its other effects, such an event would likely cause a mass extinction that would make our animal illustrations immediately outdated. We're prepared to revise our illustrations accordingly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
