1. The story behind this book
There is no doubt about it. Toddlers can be tricky. On one hand they can be lovely. On the other hand they can be really hard work. They'll make you laugh. And they will probably bring you to tears. Or at least a high level of frustration.
I felt the same way when my children were small and I was struggling to get them to do things. I felt enormous empathy for them, but wasn’t sure what the alternative was to threatening, bribing or putting them into time out.
It’s been my mission since then to find another way. I’ve now been working in Montessori education for nearly 15 years and love to learn from the 100 toddlers and parents I see every week in my classroom. I am so happy to share with you what I have learned and help you understand your toddler better too.
This book is the result. Your comprehensive guide to raising toddlers in a Montessori way.
A quick aside for those of you that don't know Montessori. It is an alternative education system where, instead of the teacher standing at the front of the classroom telling the kids what they need to know, the children are free to explore a classroom of well-designed materials covering language, mathematics, daily life skills and more. The result is that the children are able to follow their unique natural rhythm and development as well as learn with concrete learning materials to make discoveries for themselves. But that's it. It's not just for school aged children - you can apply exactly the same ideas in your home and with your toddler.
And when I say toddler, I'm talking about children around 1 to 3 years, give or take a few months.
Each section of the book is super practical and it is beautifully designed to make it even easier to read. It’s perfect if you are a busy parent, carer or even grandparent. And it doesn't matter if you are brand new to Montessori or have been using Montessori for a while - or even if you aren't planning to send your children to Montessori school. You can read it from cover to cover. Or just open up the book at a page that interests you and you will find something practical you can try today.
You’ll learn how to set up your home to get rid of the chaos and bring back some calm into your lives. You will get the tools to work together with your child. How you can lead, guide and support them, especially when they are having a hard time (and throwing themselves on the ground in the most inconvenient of places). You’ll also get ideas to create Montessori activities at home that are just right for your toddler.
You will find answers to your questions. To see there is another more peaceful way to be with your toddler. To help you plant the seeds to raise a respectful and responsible human being. To work on a relationship with your toddler which you will be building on for years.
So are you ready to say goodbye to frustration and hello to peace and calm? It’s time for us to learn to see through our toddler’s eyes - The Montessori Toddler.

3. More about the book
Written completely from scratch, not just a compilation of blog posts
It is kind of disappointing if you order a book from someone you have been following online, only to discover that the book is a compilation of their blog posts. Never fear. I have written this book from scratch and put it together into logical and clear sections, easy to find exactly what you need.
Easy to read
The book layout and illustrations are being created by the very talented Hiyoko Imai. So the book will not only be practical, it will be beautiful and easy to read too.
Environmentally friendly production
I am also happy to be collaborating with local printers here in the Netherlands to make an environmentally friendly book. Our two preferred suppliers offer FSC paper or paper made from agriwaste and the inks will be plant or soy based.
- softcover/paperback book - each end will be bookended by French flaps (that's those fun flaps like a book jacket but part of the cover) which make it look lovely, keep it sturdy, and give you a built in bookmark to hold your place
- 200 - 250 pages
- handy A5 size (H 210 mm x W 148 mm)
- durable with sewn stitching to make it easy to open flat

5. What will I do with the money raised in this Kickstarter project?
Stage 1 goal €12,500 The money raised from this Kickstarter will enable me to finish and deliver this beautifully designed soft cover book to people around the globe. If I meet our initial funding goal of €12,500, this will cover the illustrator's costs, the editing costs, the printing costs for the books, shipping and taxes (including all the other adhoc costs involved in this project). Once these costs have been met, I will receive a small share of the funds to cover my time writing, editing and putting the book together.
Stage 2 goal €25,000 Funds up to €25,000 will go to printing more books and adding an audio book version for all backers. The audio book is great if you are busy and don't have much time to read or if you have visual processing difficulties like dyslexia.
Stage 3 goal €75,000 If I reach my Stage 3 goal of €75,000, yes, more books and I will be able to start developing a parent education program for schools based on this book.
Stage 4 goal €75,000+ If I have survived the excitement of reaching €75,000, I will start working on translating the book into different languages. Already we have interest from Portugal, Brazil, Vietnam, Germany and the Netherlands.

Then once we reach our funding goal, your payment will be processed. The money will go to finishing and printing the first edition books. And in early 2018 you will receive your book/s.

8. Share with your friends and family
I would love you to share this project with a friend and/or your family. Help me send out more peace and positivity into the world.
If we can learn to understand our toddlers, we can also learn to understand other humans in the world, and live in a more peaceful way together.
9. About me
I am an AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) Montessori teacher and mother of 2 children. Finding Montessori helped me so much and love to help parents introduce these ideas in their homes too, helping them get back the calm and joy with their toddlers.
I run parent-child Montessori classes in Amsterdam at Jacaranda Tree Montessori. And two years ago I set up The Montessori Notebook to give tips, answer questions, and run e-courses and online workshops for parents which over 1,000 people have already enjoyed. Now I am extending this support by writing this book to answer all your questions too.
I can't wait to share with you what I have learned.
Here is what a few people have said...
"Simone is a very warm, compassionate, and intelligent instructor who creates a sense of serenity and support in the classroom while maintaining an air of humour and enjoyment. Her genuineness allows her to form strong relationships with the children resulting in the children’s increased respect for themselves, others, and the learning process.”
...about The Montessori Notebook
"This is amazing!! Thank you so much Simone!!! An invaluable reference indeed, so great to have it all in one place. That must have been so much work. Very grateful."
...about my e-course
"I just want to send you a HUGE 'Thank you' I am sure you get this all the time but we have loved the course!! It has really helped me unravel the 'mystery' of Montessori, especially being a newbie in this area!!"
...about the book
"I am so excited!!! Congratulations on this new project and of course I cannot wait to get the book in my hands!"
10. Huge thanks to...
Lullatone for allowing me to use their music in the Kickstarter video. Check out their website (their music is so sweet and uplifting) and be sure to follow them on Instagram and see all the super creative stuff they are up to.
Hiyoko Imai (illustrator/designer extraordinaire) for her creativity, enthusiasm and support. She is one of those generous souls that is helping to translate my words into the most beautiful version it can be. She has recently launched Nihongo Post workshops & snail mail packages to share Japanese culture and crafts with everyone.
To all the families I have worked with. I have learned so much from you. Thank you for trusting me to work with you, grow with you, laugh with you and support you.
And to you. For your support. Let's spread the word far and wide and see what a difference we can make changing one family at a time.
Risks and challenges
This is a low risk project. The book is nearly complete and I am working with experienced printers. There is a small risk that I have overlooked an aspect of production that may delay delivery or unforeseen delays with printing or shipping. I am hoping you will receive your book in early 2018. I apologise in advance if there are any delays and will inform you if any such delays arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
