First manufactured in 2013, these were a sell out and an amazing dress! We are so excited to be able to bring them back! When we first produced these, this was in the days before we offered a plus size option, this time around they are offered in all sizes from 6-28. We are also for the first time able to offer our long skirt as well as short skirt option in these.
I started my small business Silly Old Sea Dog in 2013 after graduating in Fashion. Our aim is to produce vintage inspired dresses in all-inclusive sizes for every women, and for them all to be ethically made in the UK.
Silly Old Sea Dog’s studio is based in Newquay, UK where our items are designed, our hair accessories are all made here by our local team. Our collection of dresses are all designed in Newquay and then produced by our small factory in Scotland. We are passionate about manufacturing in the UK and offering something different from that available from the chain stores. We design all of the patterns ourselves and produce them in quality designer cotton fabrics.
Everything about our dresses is designed to be top quality. They are made to last and be enjoyed for years to come. The fabric is all 100% cotton, which means they can be washed, tumble dried and ironed. The zips are all YKK, our dresses are lined in spotty 100% cotton fabric and have deep concealed side pockets. The sizes have been made to fit real women, we use fit models of all sizes to test our patterns before they are graded. Our factory in Scotland cut out all our patterns by hand, they are then sewn on machines by our skilled seamstresses, many which have worked at the family run factory for over 20 years. All of our staff are paid fairly for the work that they do, and protected by EU laws, which makes our finished dresses sustainable and ethical. Our ethics are at the heart of our business, along with quality beautiful dresses that make you feel fabulous and stand out from the crowd!
2018 trading was my hardest year to date in terms of sales. Our social media reach has been lower, our events haven’t been as fruitful as past years and many events we used to trade and do well at are no longer running. Our website sales have been down and we aren't getting found on our Etsy store - our reach is 50% down from last year and I’ve done nothing differently! I am trying to get through 2019 with a positive outlook, but it is hard. I'm sure many other small businesses are feeling the same.
Finding the cash after a pretty awful year for making stock is proving difficult, and I have therefore decided to open up a some of our popular dresses for pre-orders on re-runs. And as these seem to be going well, we will also be launching some brand new designs and collaborations throughout the year! This way you can ensure that you get your dress, we can carry on producing to our high standards and in an ethical factory that we love, rather than having to downgrade to somewhere un-ethical. And for the first time in a long time, we are able to offer our sizes 26 and 28 (we haven't been able to stock these as they don't sell well on our website, but as you are ordering bespoke, we can make them available). You are also helping to keep my business afloat. during very difficult trading times.
So please do support us and other local businesses this year. Without your support, we can’t exist.
Imogen and Suki wear our dress with a short 50cm skirt, you can also order the dress with a longer skirt which is 62cm (below the knee length on most).
Our matching accessories offer a great small purchase if you would just like to support us, or a fab combination with the dress!

Risks and challenges
We will only be able to manufacture the dresses if we reach our goal. The reason for this is that our factory have a minimum order value and we are only able to buy fabrics by the roll.
We have lots of experience in making our dresses and working with our factory in Scotland, so we know that if we reach our goal, we can deliver the finished product.
Dresses will be none refundable or exchangeable as ordered via our Kickstarter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
