About this project
Silica Magazine is a digital and print periodical exploring geographic and environmental issues in the digital age.
Issue No 2: Homeland will examine and report on the United States’ infrastructure, environment and climate policy during the first 100 days of our new political leadership.
What happens to America if regulations are discarded, earth science is questioned, and satellites are switched off? What happens if pipelines, arctic drills, and border-walls begin to redraw territories?
We need your support to produce digital and print editions of Homeland. The digital version will be published on silicamag.com, completely ad-free and free to access, with custom-coded responsive and interactive content. The limited-run print edition will be an ad-free, meticulously designed, collectable glossy zine. Homeland will be released in May 2017 along with rewards shipments for all off our backers.
Silica Mag's Mission
Silica investigates the geographic, ecological, and technological phenomena in the digital age. Our goal is to bring hard journalism, substantive artwork, and pioneering commentary through carefully-crafted interactive and print media.
We are an inclusive collective of journalists, designers, technologists, and artists seeking to explore the complexities of our planet through compelling and forward-thinking experimental media. Silica Media Inc. is an independent, registered non-profit founded in 2016 headquartered in Brooklyn, New York. Our first issue 'Lakes,' released in March 2016, examined freshwater bodies across the world in an era of anthropogenic change. The Lake Issue can be found at silicamag.com.
Our apparel rewards are made to order and printed by hand at our Managing Editor’s home silkscreening studio. We take every effort to ensure our production process is as environmentally-friendly as possible.
What We’re Raising
Silica is a collective passion project. Our primary funding goal is to cover the costs of production, web hosting, and printing of the issue. Funding beyond the minimum will increase the amount we can pay our contributors and the scope of what we can create.
If we reach our minimum goal of $3,000, we will be able to make the second issue in-line with our first one with around two interactive features, four journalistic articles, four art showcases, and four commentary pieces.
Funding beyond the minimum would enable the creation of video content, commissioned digital artwork, and more in-depth features. A well-funded issue will also expand Silica’s future as an organization.
Risks and challenges
We do not know what 2017 has in store, so we can not exactly predict the stories we will cover. No matter what, the stories will align with the themes of the issue and Silica as a whole.
We encourage backers to look at our first issue at silicamag.com to serve as a proof of concept of what we can do.
