The "Marcel Perez collection" DVD
The DVD will contain 10 comedy shorts starring and directed by Marcel Perez, made between 1908 and 1921, selected by me and by silent comedy film historian Steve Massa. Perez's "Robinet" Italian films (1911-1914) which will be on the DVD will be seen in new digital scans of archival 35mm materials in the Desmet Collection of the EYE Film Institute (Netherlands). Perez's American comedies that will be on the DVD will be transferred from archival 35mm prints preserved by the Library of Congress. I will create a brand new custom musical score for each film. The DVDs will be professionally authored and they will be produced and made available for sale on Amazon.com via Amazon's CreateSpace publishing-on-demand service. The box art will be created by professional graphic designer and silent era aficionado Marlene Weisman.
Films currently scheduled to be on the DVD:

update Tues July 15:
Companion booklet added to project!
Because funding pledges have exceeded the initial goal, we will be producing and publishing a companion booklet to the DVD. This is similar to what happened on the "Musty Suffer" project. The booklet will be written by Steve Massa and will contain info about Perez's life and career, as well as the films, and will have rarely seen stills and images. Anyone who has pledged $25 or more will receive a copy of the book.
Release date (expected):
Based on my current performance schedule for July-Sept, and the time it takes for scoring and authoring, I expect to be able to have the DVD finished and available by the end of October 2014. I already have the logistics for the films transfers lined up and ready to go with both the EYE Film Institute and the Library of Congress.
Make a pledge
We've all heard of great silent films having been preserved at a film archive and thought, "wouldn't it be great if that got a DVD release?". Here's a chance for you to help make this happen! Make your pledge to "The Marcel Perez Collection"…and participate in a unique silent film enterprise.
Risks and challenges
The "Marcel Perez Collection" DVD is my third Kickstarter-crowdfunded project. Both "Accidentally Preserved" and "The Mishaps of Musty Suffer", went over their funding goals by about $1,000 and were released on Amazon in June 2013 and April 2014 respectively. Both DVD's been well-reviewed in publications such as the NY Times, Film Threat, the Examiner and classic film blogs, and by Amazon customers.
I'll keep you updated weekly with my progress, and if there are any unforeseen delays you'll find out as soon as I know. For background, you can read all the updates from "Accidentally Preserved" and "Musty Suffer" on their respective Kickstarter pages.
I have been the producer of The Silent Clowns Film Series since its inception in 1997 and have seen it through 17 successful years of year-round shows of classic silent films in NYC as well as a number of partnerships with different venues, and its becoming a not-for-profit.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
