In MÖNSTER OUTSIDE, Sidra Bell Dance New York has joined forces with innovative Swedish composer Per Störby and his critically acclaimed chamber ensemble New Tide Orquesta, to develop a flexibly voyeuristic discourse about the nature of outliers in contemporary society. Two acts marry dance theater, chamber music, projection mapping, vocal scoring, and scenic and lighting design, the work will locate and depict aspects of human joy and despair via the experience of the “outsider". The title is a play on Swedish-English cognate irregularities; in Swedish, 'mönster' translates as 'patterns'. This work engages live audiences in the process of deconstructing social structures that create outsiders in our society, looking at outsiders as those that live and operate outside of the norm. It comments on nature and its relationship to the pursuit of technology that causes dissonance and detachment from humanity. The work uses a theatrical interplay of movement and sound patterns veering between playful and disturbing narrated by experimental vocalization. The piece will be performed in a multitiered stage arena of moving parts and screen filters that marries highly technical movement with eclectic sound worlds. MÖNSTER OUTSIDE will depict themes of human alienation in technologically driven culture, isolation, youth culture, identity and gender politics, rage, and the search for intimacy and inclusivity in constantly shifting contemporary life. Sidra Bell Dance New York will engage in a final production residency to implement the set design and sound engineering from November 8-November 16, 2017 at the Contemporary Arts Center (New Orleans, LA). This will be directly followed by our performance run and world premiere from November 17-18, 2017. The six dance artists, lighting designer, set designer, and Bell will travel to NOLA to finish producing the work during a few days of technical rehearsal with the band. This is our last collaborative residency which represents the homestretch of this project which has been in development since early 2015. This massive world premiere has been preceded by four creative residencies. The first was a seed residency in Stockholm with Bell, one dancer and the composer (January 2016). The second included both performing ensembles in Stockholm (October 2016). The third was an exclusive preview and technical residency at NYC's Baruch Performing Arts Center with the performing ensembles and implementation of set des of tign prototypes and sound design (April 2017). The fourth was at Vara Concert Hall in August 2017 which was our last full creative residency and where we focused on the dramaturgy of the piece.
Our fundraising campaign through Kickstarter goes directly towards the costs of the technical rehearsals and performance run with our international team of fourteen artists at The Contemporary Arts Center in NOLA this November. These mounting costs include: travel (flights/ground transportation), accommodations, artist fees, and technical production. As we assemble our largest artistic team to date, we seek your support as we move into this culminating performance event in one of the world's most exciting cities! And... we hope that you might join us in New Orleans for the performances. http://cacno.org/performances/sidra-bell-dance-new-york-m%C3%B6nster-outside.

Risks and challenges
Over the three year process of creating MÖNSTER OUTSIDE (including pre-production) Sidra Bell Dance New York's international profile has grown significantly with partnerships developing across the United States and abroad. Our challenge in the last stage of this project has been coordinating its many limbs and managing the expenses related to international travel. As we expand our artistic mission yearly, our operating and project costs expand. The organization is growing both fiscally and artistically. The scale of MÖNSTER OUTSIDE and the size of its cast requires that we actively seek out sources of funding and appeal to our individual giving pool at this critical time. Our strategy over the years has been to combine foundational and presenting support, while creating a family of supporters who respond to the call to give to our artistic vision every year. Your contribution in this campaign will go directly towards the full realization of MÖNSTER OUTSIDE this November and its touring/production needs in New Orleans.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
