So, what the hell is a "Showrunner" anyway?
"A showrunner is defined by all the things they do. They're the head-writer. They're involved in casting. They oversee post-production. They're the public face. They're the ringmaster, the elephant tamer and the people who clean the cages."
- Michael Oates Palmer (Writer - The West Wing)
Often described as the most complex job in the entertainment business, a showrunner is the chief writer/producer on a TV series and, in most instances, the show's creator. Battling daily between art and commerce, showrunners manage every aspect of a TV show's development and production: creative, financial and logistical.
"It’s an exciting time for television, and with the rise of the showrunner in full swing, at what could be a bellwether moment for the industry, it’s the perfect time for a filmmaker to pull back those layers."
- Kristopher Tapley (HitFix/InContention)
Showrunners: A Documentary Film is the first feature documentary that delves into the creative and chaotic world of the showrunner. You'll be taken inside the lives and minds of todays top TV Showrunners, who have opened up the world of your favorite TV shows to us and given access to their writers rooms, their production sets while filming, production meetings, edit bays as well as on to the red carpet. As well, we'll take you behind the scenes at special events like ComicCon and WonderCon with featured showrunners and actors from such beloved series as Lost, Bones, Boardwalk Empire, Revenge, Fringe, Big Bang Theory, House, Person of Interest, Sons of Anarchy, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Castle, Spartacus, House of Lies & Once Upon a Time.
Are you a diehard TV fan following every showrunner out there on Twitter or perhaps a more casual fan with an interest in how great TV shows are made? Perhaps you're an aspiring writer looking to gain a greater understanding of the business or you just love Joss Whedon! (we know we do), Showrunners is a film you won't want to miss.
We are living in an age where television is the new film, and we believe it’s time these unsung heroes receive their due. We've already filmed interviews with each showrunner mentioned on this page as well as other Emmy award-winning showrunners, writers, actors and studio and network execs.
As Showrunners grew exponentially in scope and scale, and as fantastic new interview opportunities presented themselves, we began to realize that this could be something much bigger than we originally envisioned. We've completed filming all of the interviews and behind the scenes material, and now, as we’re nearing completion, we're asking for your help to get us across the finish line as we head into post-production.
This film is our love letter to the medium of television as well as to the networks, writers, producers, actors and crews who collaborate to bring scripted programming to life. We would be honored if you would help us write it. Any support you can give to our Kickstarter campaign will be greatly appreciated and allow us to deliver a film that reveals what really goes on behind the curtain in creating captivating television.

About our composer, Jeremy Little:
Jeremy Little is a self-described “recovering punk rocker.” A composer as well as an accomplished songwriter, Jeremy’s career spans many genres. As a composer he has worked on commercials for clients such as Comcast, Firestone, and Starz Network. As a solo artist his music has been licensed many times for television in shows like Fringe, Shameless, Men in Trees, and The Big C, as well as promos for The Simpsons, Psych, The Cleveland Show, and Raising Hope.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
"Showrunners" is perhaps a little unusual compared to most Kickstarter projects in that we are not just setting out on this adventure -- we are already well over two years into production and are on our way to completion.
The making of this film has been quite a journey for us and has presented many challenges along the way (as any low budget filmmaker can attest) but we have overcome them through a mix of experience and perseverance. Our original small funding got us to this point but we need your help to complete the film
The challenges that lie ahead of us are completing an edit that comprises almost 150 hours of footage and getting that cut down to approximately 90 minutes. Then we need to go through all of the post production steps required including the picture grade (color correction), audio mixing/mastering and conform (compiling all the elements into a finished product) to get the film out into the world. If successfully funded we will be using a team of 2 editors to try to help us speed up the process. It will also allow us to complete the films graphics to present the highest quality production.
So far, aside from the technical crew involved, no one working on this film has been paid for their time and effort in making it. This is very much a film made BY TV fans, FOR TV fans, and our passion for this material shows through in every frame. This passion and our combined years of experience in filmmaking will continue to fuel us through the post production process and help us overcome these challenges to deliver the best film we can. Your help will make that possible.
