UPDATE: WE DID IT, THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!!!! Let's set a stretch goal in these final hours of $55K -- can we do it??
Hello, darlin’s! We’re the filmmaking team behind documentaries you may have previously enjoyed, such as Vito, I Am Divine, Tab Hunter Confidential, and The Fabulous Allan Carr. We’re now very proud to introduce you to our latest feature, GODDESS: THE FALL AND RISE OF "SHOWGIRLS"!
We’re launching this campaign on 3/19, aka “Showgirls Day,” and we’re so excited we can barely thread a needle! For the next 30 days, we’ll be revealing the cast and crew members of Showgirls we’ve interviewed, along with other titillating news about the documentary.
Goddess will be the definitive chronicle of one of the most riveting, polarizing, derided and deified movies of the past 25 years (or EVER). We’ll explore Showgirls’ journey from box office poison to beloved cult classic, and the effect it had on the careers of those involved. We’ll also examine the legacy of Showgirls, and the woman at the center of its storm.
In order to make this movie a reality, we’re counting on our fellow Showgirls fans to make it rain to the tune of $50,000 (or more!) to help us pay for editing, music, graphic design, archival footage, sound and legal. You don’t need an MBA to know that’s a lot of cash – and if we don’t hit the jackpot of the goal we’ve set, the whole campaign will be a bust. But we’ve gotta gamble if we wanna win!
We have some fabulous incentives to help us thank you for your support, whether you donate at the Doggy Chow level or want to be a Goddess yourself. We truly appreciate contributions of any size.

THE GODDESS NARRATIVE
They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but for the cast and crew of one particular film, what happened in Vegas changed the course of the careers of those attached…as well as cinema itself…forever.
Billed as a searing and sexual look into the world of the erotic dancers of Las Vegas, Showgirls was touted as a benchmark in a new era of adult entertainment, and as a flagship for the NC-17 rating. Boundary-pushing director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas birthed a film that was poised to show that the world was ready for clever eroticism at the multiplex. However, reactions to Showgirls upon its opening were less than favorable, and critical venom aimed at the film ensured that the NC-17 rating was no longer “the next phase” but box office poison. Lead actress Elizabeth Berkley bore a large brunt of Showgirls’ derision, its failure marring her career for years to come.
But in the past 20+ years, the film initially treated by Hollywood and critics as an unmentionable stain has been reinvented as a sparkling gem of cult cinema. Showgirls’ evolution from demonized celluloid to canonized classic mirrors not only the evolution of the movie’s lead character, Nomi Malone, but also of the woman who played her. Nearly defeated by an industry who blamed a young woman who unapologetically celebrated her sexuality, Elizabeth Berkley – buoyed by the thunderous support of fans – publicly embraced her legacy at a 20th anniversary screening of Showgirls. Berkley acknowledged the growing impact of her iconic character she tried for years to forget, and admitted that she’d grown to admire Nomi’s strength herself.
And Berkley doesn’t stand alone. A growing congregation of Showgirls devotees have embraced their inner Goddesses and taken that love out into the world. Midnight screenings, themed drag shows, and numerous references, parodies and homages in pop culture has ensured Showgirls’ continued popularity, while also introducing it to new audiences. An initial box office bomb is now one of MGM’s Top 20 all-time sellers on home video. The movie that everyone once hoped to forget now stands to be remembered for all time.
Goddess: The Fall and Rise of Showgirls talks to the cast and crew who lived through this epic journey, as well as to scholars, journalists, drag queens and fans who contributed to Showgirls’ redemption. These all-new interviews, along with never-before-seen archival footage and photos, will make this The Definitive Showgirls Documentary that lusty fans have been waiting for!
