About this project
An exhibition like no other. A year in the making, SHOVE IT! will feature the custom designs of over 30 artists presented on skateboard decks and paper toys. Our artist roster features talents from 12 countries, spanning five continents!
Hosted by Thee Eye Gallery, SHOVE IT! will open the night of June 7, 2013 at the Polk County Heritage Gallery in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. Each deck and paper toy combination will be presented along with some of the original paintings used to create the skate deck art. There will also be a display featuring skate photography, the Baykiddead paper toy collection highlighting the contributing artists past work as well as a history of the paper toy.
Through your funding help, we can make SHOVE IT! the IT event for Paper Toys and Skateboard Deck Art worldwide in 2013.
As with the skateboards, each artist has customized a paper toy. Not just any paper toy, this 19" tall (48.26 cm) was designed by Baykiddead to awe and inspire. Judging by the designs our artists have turned in, it seems to have succeeded. Below is the all white version.
Each artist has customized a deck, some got ambitious and designed more! The decks are hand-made here in the United States and are constructed using 7 ply of only the finest North American Hard Rock Maple. These decks are the industry standard and provide plenty of pop and all the feel you want. They're also going to look amazing on your wall, as they truly are works of art.
We've launched our Kickstarter campaign by revealing the first 30 in our collection. You can pledge now and choose later! Every deck will be revealed during our campaign, so you'll want to make sure to keep track of updates and stay in the loop. Who knows, you just might want them all.
So here they are, so stoked to be sharing these with you...
Keep in mind, even if you're not a skater, you can still buy a skateboard! These decks are going to look awesome on any wall!
We've just posted the latest set of 10 new decks! Below are the "Woodgrain Series" which feature 3 of Matt Welbourn's designs as well as another Matacho Descorp, and one from Baykiddead.
And speaking of Matacho Descorp, there are 4 new colorways of his original Skeleton design.
Both the WOODGRAIN SERIES and the MATACHO DESCORP SKELETON COLORWAY SERIES are now being sold as a 5 deck package. Details to the right.
You'll also note, there is now the official SHOVE IT! deck, done by, who else, Matacho Descorp! 3rd row down, in the middle, you'll find his "SHOVE IT! Logo Deck."
We've got what we think are some great rewards, please take a moment to look through them, and support this exhibition any way you can. If you're considering a deck, or three, please go ahead and support now and take your time selecting which ones you'd like. New decks will be revealed all the way through our campaign. You'll also be receiving a special Kickstarter price if you pledge now.
The price of the decks will increase at the June 7th SHOVE IT! exhibition and we will not be able to guarantee the availability of a particular deck after our Kickstarter campaign ends on March 30th.
Support our Kickstarter now, and you'll be sure to get the deck of your choice.
Please Note: Your choice of design, size of t-shirt, and any other specifics of your reward will be taken care of after our campaign finishes via the Kickstarter Order Survey.
Here is an idea of what some of our killer rewards look like. Please take a second to check them out and support however you can, thank you!

It truly is a blessing to have all of these incredibly talented people down for the cause.
• Überkraaft: Essex, UK
Uber is defined as; denoting an outstanding or supreme example of a particular kind of person or thing. One might think it egotistical to work under such a moniker, but in this case, with this evidence, it's spot on.
• Sjors Trimbach: Enschede, The Netherlands
There is a face on the currency in your pocket, the statue in your square, the cover of your magazine. None of these faces belong to Sjors Trimbach. That's a crime.
• Matt Hawkins: Kansas City, Missouri , USA
One of the more identifiable styles in the game, Matt's creations have been featured in publications, numerous books, and curated shows worldwide. He also plays the banjo. But we don't hold that against him.
• Kim Kirch: San Diego, California, USA
Equal parts stoke and shit-eating grin. You try painting and signing "hang loose" at the same time.
• Van Holmgren: Des Moines, Iowa, USA
What actor, dead or alive, could play this dude in the Academy Award winning story of his life? None, that's who. No one would believe the story if it were portrayed by some simple thespian. The audience would think it silly. They'd scoff at the inadequate attempts to pull off the derring-do, the laissez-faire, the smile. They'd leave the theatre saying to their date, "nice cinematography, but what I wonder what he was really like?".
• Phidias Gold: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
I want to say fancy things about Phidias Gold. But I don't want a punch in the mouth. I'd ask him if I could have one of his beers, but he's making out with my date. I'd get that tattoo he has, but it looks like it would hurt. Me, not him, nothing hurts Phidias Gold.
• 3eyedbear: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
We are all born with curiosity. As we grow older our questions become more difficult and the answers more elusive. As we gain experience some stop looking outside for the answers, some turn their curiosity inwards. And when they do, they find a 3 Eyed Bear looking back at them.
• Marko Zubak: Zagreb, Croatia
I want to learn how to swear in Croatian. If only so that I can fully express my love for YEBOMAYCU!!!
• Nina Palomba: Chicago, Illinois, USA
Nina has done what so many others aspire to do, create a world full of rich, memorable characters. A world that once you're in it, you know exactly where you are. Now just try and leave.
• Jordan Weber: Des Moines, Iowa, USA
There's smooth, and then there's smooth. The second smooth comes with a lot more "O's" in the middle. And then there's Jordan Weber smooth. I've been working on his bio for 8 days now and I'm still not done typing all the "O's" in his variation.
• Nick Knite: Essen, Germany
What can be said about Nick Knite that hasn't already been said about every great magician, high wire act, and raconteur? The only difference is with Mr. Knite; there are no smoke and mirrors, no safety net, and the stories are real.
• Abz: Hawaii, USA
You know that scene in that movie where all these dudes are drinking and causing mischief, and then some innocent walks in and just when we think it's about to go from bad to worse, the "innocent" starts cracking heads and restoring order so that she and her friends can listen to Motorhead on the juke box? Yeah, that's a true story!
• Steve Lee: Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that if you looked at Steve Lee's birth certificate, where it listed given middle name, you'd find "Hells Yeah" with a little lightning bolt for the "s".
• Frank Hansen: Los Angeles, California, USA
Using almost a kaleidoscopic approach, his design work hides so many things for the viewer to discover that every time you see a piece, it's almost like seeing it for the first time, again and again.
• Horrorwood: Takamatsu, Japan
Horrorwood. The very name conjures goosebumps and butterflies. Good scary. Scary good. Like running back into your house after taking out the trash cans. Knowing there certainly isn't any monster, but smiling at the thought there could be. Which makes you run all the more faster. Horrorwood. See what I mean?
• Dolly Oblong: The Netherlands
A paper artist with a style so distinct you know immediately who you're dealing with. It's also a style so approachable that you can't help but fall in love with each and every character that you meet. Wether it's paper, plush, or poster, Dolly Oblong's sweet hooks will find a way to grab ahold of you.
• merrci: Nantes, France
A ghost, a specter, a paper toy ninja! He can't be bothered by capital letters or self portraits. If you see him at all, it's only a shadow. All we know about him is that the eyes are the windows that look into the soul, and he must like coffee.
• [mck]: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The first thing you see with an [mck] toy is the wide, mad grin. The next thing you experience is the same spreading across your own face upon building one of his toys. One more reason The Netherlands seems to be the center of the paper toy universe.
• Robert Schulte Jr.: Des Moines, Iowa, USA
Painter, printer, sculpter, collector, chef, bass player. The only thing he isn't, is a mean SOB. He doesn't have the range. But he can do just about everything else, except fold an open-ended straight or 2 pair.
• Tougui: Annecy, France
What does one say about Tougui? For those that know him, or of him, anything you could say is met with, "yeah. yeah, he's great, fantastic, we know! now leave me alone so I can finish building his newest toy." For those who don't know Tougui, anything you could, or should say about him might be considered hyperbole, especially if one is unaware of the esteem in which he's held. So let this one one sentence, albeit an inadequate one, suffice. Tougui is..!
• Thunderpanda: Jakarta, Indonesia
There is chaos in the Thunderpanda dominion. There are monsters with 20 eyeballs and monster-ettes more concerned with their hair-style than the devouring of non-believing children. If you find yourself transported to this world, you'll have a difficult time choosing to run for your life, or laughing yourself silly.
• Kyle Thye: Des Moines, Iowa, USA
If any one of these pieces of art ends up with a lampshade on its head when the night's over, it'll be Kyle's. And who doesn't remember the guy with a lampshade on his head? There have been some parties where that dude was the night's savior.
• Harlancore: Austin, Texas, USA
Rude, crass, mythical, iconic, and that's just the tongue. A brand all to itself, the Boxpunx series of paper toys is one of those rare beasts that changes everything forever. There was a time before you knew of it, and a time now, where you'll always remember, those damn tongues.
• Bamcat: Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Don't let the creaky knees, and the average transitions, or the kind smile, and ever-appreciative attitude fool you. This girl plays for keeps. She'll bring the hammer and leave you wondering if those 2-headed birds flying circles around yer skull are real.
• Jonny Chiba: Liverpool, UK
Chibba Chibba, y'all! Rally cry? Greeting? Secret handshakes? Yes to all three? My face is a speaker and I can't stop getting down!
• Frank Hansen: Des Moines, Iowa, USA
Frank's art draws a line in the sand. Dare's you to cross it. Scares you to death to think about doing just that, but for some reason it's a scarier thought to stay where you are. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. But I always thought that was a flawed logic. Always "do." And when you cross that line, and this grizzly bear of a man embraces you for it? You can't help but feel sorry for those who stood rooted on the other side.
• Salazad: Bandung, Indonesia
The thing I sense most in Salazad's work is pride. Pride in who he is, where he's from, the things that made him what he is today. There is a sense of that pride in every detail of his work. The stories his work tells isn't always about the thing, it's more about the place, and sometimes that's more important.
• Chris Vance: Des Moines, Iowa, USA
The simple things can fool you into thinking you know more than you do. You stand there smug, and all-knowing, and the simple things sit there, quiet, watching, smiling, deferring to your "magical wisdom." And then there will come a time when the world wraps you in its suffocating complexity, and your heart palpitates and you think you're about to have a nervous breakdown, and then the simple thing looks upon your plight, smiles, pulls a string, and you are free. That's Chris Vance's work. Pulling a string. Freeing you.
• Matacho Descorp: Popayan, Colombia
There is a language at work in the art of Matacho Descorp. There are words that mean many things, stories that go back to the beginning, wisdom to solve all the problems. We need to listen, to understand, to teach this language. Our children will thank us.
• Matt Welbourn: Shreveport, Louisiana, USA
I see what you're doing Louisiana, thinking you can claim Welbourn as your own. You might have him now, but he belongs to us. The bones, and the skinny messed up girls, and the crazy grins, those are ours, Louisiana.
• Guilain le Vilain: Tours, France
God is in the details.
• turboPistola x AnyOldIon: Nashville, Tennessee, USA and Brisbane, Australia
You know that saying, "two wrongs don't make a right?" Look no farther than this collaborating pair for a challenging argument to that assertion.
• Mekazoo: Istanbul, Turkey
There's this guy, at every party. You don't notice him at first, until you spot the watch, or the new kicks no one else has. And then that old school beat drops on the stereo and the next thing you know this kid is riding that piece of cardboard with moves Gumby would covet. Mekazoo, ladies and gentlemen.
• Carrie Black: Des Moines, Iowa, USA
Somewhere there is an old salty fireplug of a man, with more scars than teeth, a photographic memory of the alleyway doors behind his local, and a legion of men and women who'd take a bullet for him. Somewhere this man exists and he smiles at the thought of Carrie Black.
• St. Hellvis: Kungälv, Sweden
If there's one thing any good party needs at some point in the story arc, it's a raging mosh pit and Swedish death metal. We've got that covered. Introducing Sweden's most hard-core paper toy artist!
• Adrienne Gates: San Francisco, California, USA
Remember that one friend you had back when you were just a kid, the one with a big sister? The big sister with the cool records and the crazy ideas that made sense and the way-before-their-time shoes. The big sister, who you quickly realized, was the only reason to hang out with that particular friend? Remember her?
• Carl Kenz: Kaiserslautern, Germany
A graf artist with a light-hearted style but a serious approach. His ambition is transformation. Anything in need of color is his canvas.
Risks and challenges
We have worked tirelessly for the better part of a year to ensure that our project is 100% executable. The only risk we can foresee is having too much fun and creating so many amazing works of art, people's heads might explode.
Thank you for your pledge. We look forward to sharing this amazing art with you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
As a Kickstarter supporter, you are guaranteed the deck of your choice.
We wanted it to be skate-centric and memorable. Trust us, we're not telling you to "get lost."
Each reward will have different shipping dates based on manufacture. We've listed the approximate month of fulfillment for each reward with its listing in the right hand column. We tried to make sure each estimated date is viable and fair.
"The Chase" was filmed by Des Moines filmmaker Dustin Dooley. And the "Interview" was shot by Greg Wilcox, also of Des Moines. All of our footage was shot in or around downtown Des Moines.
I don't see a reward level for the deck, toy, and the sticker pack, that's what I want. How do I get all three?
You would support SHOVE IT! at the "GRIND LEVEL" and add an additional $10.00 for a total donation of $120.00.
These truly are pieces of art, and would look amazing hanging on your wall. Triptychs always look nice! You could also give a deck as a gift to someone you know who does skate.
And you can always pass on the good word about SHOVE IT! to your friends and family. Make sure you visit our Facebook page to stay in the loop regarding the exhibition after our Kickstarter is completed.
As the artists participating in SHOVE IT! are from all over the world, it would be cost prohibitive for us to ship all the decks out for signing and then ship them back. However, there will be a selection of artists who will attend the event and who live in Des Moines, and those decks could be signed if you so desire. It is also possible, once you receive your deck(s), to ship them yourself to the artist for signing. Should you want to do this, we would facilitate it to the best of our ability.
Yes. In addition to instructions on the template, we will also be publishing a video that will serve as the definitive "how-to" guide on building your Baykid paper toy.
$6,250 is the cost of producing all of the skateboards and paper toys for the exhibition, installing the show in the gallery, renting the gallery space for the duration of SHOVE IT!, hosting a really nice opening night, and doing some promotion to help get the word out. The other cost involved is making sure each and every one of our supporters receives the reward items promised to them. Of course we'd love to raise more through Kickstarter which will allow us to broaden the scope of the SHOVE IT! and its reach.
Many of our artists come from the paper toy world. It's a very giving community willing to help each other when the cause arises. There's also a strong Des Moines contingent keen on the idea of drawing attention to a very vibrant art scene comprised of very talented people. With those two groups as a committed base, the other artists couldn't help but say yes. We realize how fortunate we are to have so many talented people rally for our cause.
You can choose it now if you've found one you're sure you want. But you don't have to make a choice until after our campaign is finished and all the decks and toys are revealed. The importance of pledging now is so that we can be assured of reaching our goal so as to turn our focus to the exhibition.
Totally. These are hand made, 7 ply North American Hard Rock Maple decks that have the truck bolt holes pre-drilled and are ready to shred.
