Spectraball is an indie game which combines elements of platforming, puzzle solving, addictive gameplay and stunning visuals to deliver an experience that sets a new standard for its genre.
Loosely based on one of my favorite childhood games, Marble Madness, the object of the game is simple: make it through each stage as quickly as possible. However, as you progress you will find that each stage presents its own unique obstacles and challenges that you will have to overcome.
In addition to the excitement of simply completing the stages, Spectraball also offers online competition against others through its leaderboard system. Can you get the best time?
What is Spectraball: Extended Edition?
Spectraball: Extended Edition is a complete remake of Spectraball. When it was originally released back in 2008, Spectraball was overall well-received by its relatively small fan base, but many small technical issues and the shortness of the game prevented it from reaching its full potential. The company that developed Spectraball went out of business shortly after its release largely due to underexposure.
We wanted to bring Spectraball back and make it better than ever.
As members of the team that worked on the original, we weren't ever satisfied with how Spectraball was left. After acquiring the rights to it through Shorebound Studios and working hard on it for several months, we were able to mold the game as it was originally envisioned: stable, longer, and with overall more polished gameplay. We have vastly expanded, redesigned and polished existing maps as well as created new ones. Additionally, this time around we plan to offer a DRM-free purchase option (previously, Spectraball was so heavily integrated with Steam that you always needed to be online to even play it!)
We truly believe Spectraball has the potential to be the best game in its genre and, with your help, we can make sure of it!
Why do we need help?
While most of the development work is already done, in order to make this happen we still need to cover marketing and asset licensing costs. While these costs aren't terribly expensive, for a small indie developer they are still significant. Please help us in any way you can. We believe in making fun games and need your help to do it!
What is the release date?
The Spectraball Extended Edition is set to launch December 14th 2012. If you have already purchased Spectraball on Steam, the extended version will become available to you free of charge through Steam as we will be launching it as a massive patch.
What platforms will it be available on?
Currently Spectraball runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. This time around, we wanted to make it a high priority to support the Mac and Linux community. We would love to launch on XBox Live Arcade but we have yet to speak with Microsoft. We have also discussed porting it to mobile but would need to discuss how the controls would work and it would need a few design changes.
Does it support controllers?
Of course it does!
Risks and challenges
The project is a month away from release, but there could be unexpected technical hurdles. That being said, if there were any, they would be very minor issues with relatively easy fixes.
