About

Dwarf Project: The Video Game is a 8-bit retro style game based from Dwarf Fortress. The game will have some features of what you loved from Dwarf Fortress. It won't be a 100% Dwarf Fortress port but with some new ideas, too!

When complete, it will be available for Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile. I plan on releasing the PC, Mac and Linux first. For mobile devices, it will be released a few months later after the PC/MAC/Linux release.

Dwarf Project revolves around you, your fortress, and your choices you make. The choices you make in Dwarf Fortress will have an outcome (good or bad).

When losing a dwarf in your game, he will leave a journal. The journal will giving you insight of what he did, what he stole or gave, his jobs or chores, and will show secret that may be happening to your fortress. For instance, near-by-town doesn't like how your making a big profit from their town. They may send spies to steal your goods, try to poison you, or try to make conflicts in your fortress. These are only a few instances of what may happen.

You can choose multiple paths to how you want to play. Before you start the game, can choose a base path on how you want to play. You could go military, trade, thievery, or a custom path, or none.

  • Military: Will allow you to generate special fighting dwarfs. You could use your military strength to take over other towns or villages. Any towns you do take over will have a massive outcome. You will gain new trade routes, find new crafting patterns, supplies, and more. After capturing the town, you could keep it operational while you gain even more resources and supplies OR you could burn it down. The choice is yours.
  • Trade: Allows you to generate trade routes to different town and villages that require supplies. High level trade allows you to avoid bandits/bypass thief barricades, and allows to sell any goods at any town/village.
  • Thievery: Gives your dwarfs sneak into other villages/towns. Steal  resources, patterns, trade routes, and more. High level thievery will allow you to steal rare or unique type of items or equipment, bridge/murder officials, sneak into jails, and lowers the chance to get caught.
  • Custom/Random?: This is where you could customize the style you would like to play. When choosing custom, you will have a limited amount of points but allowing you to choose the way you want to play.

Crafting system will be similar to games like minecraft, Gnomoria, and a few other. When you play Dwarf Project, you will gain a base set of crafting patterns. For higher tiers of patterns, you will need to use your path traits, buying patterns from other towns, or by doing your events. For example, you could use your thievery trait  to obtain very unique craft patterns.

Here are a few ways you could gain patterns:

  • Some patterns will be gained while crafting cosmetic objects, stations, etc.
  • You can also gain new crafting patterns by obtaining the scribe station. This station will require paper and ink but will give you a chance to learn new patterns.

As in real life, sometimes we substitute ingredients to make food, tools, etc. In dwarf project you can do the same. I want Dwarf Project be able to customize how you craft your items, food, and gear. For example, your dwarfs are starving and you want to make them pie BUT you have ZERO apples! You could swap out the apples for blue barriers. It will allow you to adjust the recipes on the fly.

Other events would appear when going with your dwarfs to gather for wood, food, or resources. Not all events will be active at a time and all events are also optional. All events will appear randomly.

Events will also effect your dwarfs, villagers, and even officials. If you cause trouble on one town, it may "Get around" that you are causing problems.

  • Three different game types. Adventure Mode, Cheat Mode, Survival mode.
  • Customized crafting system
  • Open Worlded Style Game
  • Optional Event System
  • Dwarf communication system
  • Different Style of survival game
  • Multiple/Path trait based game
  • 20+ different job types
  • 5-10+ secondary job types
  • 20 different dwarfs and enemies
  • 150 to 250 items
  • 50 Rare / Unique items
  • Over 300+ crafting patterns and 25-50 rare and unique patterns.
  • Three different biomes/worlds
  • A complete game.

I plan on submitting Stream Green Light when it gets near completion. Myself, I don't believe in DLCS and any new content from Dwarf Project will be free for anyone to enjoy.

I plan on having about 50 different event types per game which would be a total of 200 events. I want everyone's experience in Dwarf Project to be a different experience.

Each dwarf will have two status points types. First would be RPG style status points and the second would be character development status points. Some dwarfs will be great at trading/selling your equipment as others enjoy being alone while working.

You will see your dwarfs communicating with other dwarfs or even monsters. All dwarfs will be transmitting communication data. It won't be idle talk animations. The data will be used on how dwarfs get to know your play style, information will pass down to other dwarfs that will cause them to be scare of you, like you, etc.

Dwarf Project is open worlded. What that means is, if you want to murder all your dwarfs, you can. A gaurd is stopping you from entering theri city, you could bridge him or simply poison him to get entry again. I want the game to be open world as much as I can with a 2D style game. Want you to make your own adventures and your own choices. I don't want your experience in Dwarf Project to be following a path you don't enjoy.

Opened Worlded effects all areas in the game. For instance, your high geared, high level dwarf poisons an official but get caught after he dies. You can't use gold to get him out of jail BUT could risk your thieves to try to get him back.

Any backers will support the dwarf project website, Stream Light Submission costs, sound and music content, and give 110% of my time into Dwarf Project. All baclers will be included in the credit screen of the game.

Stream Green Light Note: if the game is released before Stream Green Light passes, you will get a free Stream Key of the game.

Risks and challenges

Most of the code and 50% of the art is complete. The base coding is done, all I need is AI, graphic UI, and battle code. I have been making games for about 3 years and most of the hard parts of the game development is complete. I plan on having a working Alpha near June.

If there was a delay in the game being release, I would inform all my backers but give an early release build alpha/beta until the game is released. You will also get a Stream Green Light completely free.
