The Fantasy Currency That Puts A Piece Of Middle-earth In Your Hands!
We are Shire Post Mint! We are perhaps best known as the makers of the in-world fantasy coins from A Game of Thrones™ including the popular "Iron Coin of the Faceless Man". We are a small family-run coining mint in Arkansas, USA, where we have been hand-crafting fantasy currency for more than 15 years. We use traditional techniques, solid metals, and antique machinery to create our coins. We also do lengthy research into the style, language, and imagery that goes on the coins.
All hand made in the USA. We work with engravers in house and around the country to create our designs. We roll out metal, cut them into "blanks," stamp them with one of our antique coin presses, and color or darken them if we think the coin needs that effect. It's a lengthy process that has taken years to research (and we are always learning more) but we love the effect it produces and wouldn't trade that craftsmanship for cheap production overseas.
We have recently licensed to make the in-world coinage for Middle-earth, taking inspiration directly from the books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien. Our intent is to be true to the author’s vision and the feel and character of the story in the books. As huge The Lord of the Rings fans, we are thrilled to be making coins from this world. It was the inspiration for Shire Post Mint!
These are the coins that would be used in Middle-earth by Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Men, and even the minions of the Dark Lord.
We have some coins already designed and prototyped, with preliminary packaging ready, but we want to keep expanding this line of coins and develop new designs and new sets from other places across Middle-earth (Rivendell, Fornost, Esgaroth, and more!)
We need your help to take this project to the next level! The designs and tooling are in-hand for the first group of coins: 32 different coins of The Shire™ and 7 from six other realms of Middle-earth. A small production run has been made on each design so we can supply enough to provide delivery by December 25, 2015 to the first 300 US Kickstarter backers to return surveys within one week. More information on that in the shipping section below.
Details on individual coins below Rewards and Stretch Goals sections
Coins from The Shire follow a pattern of repeating four different trees over four years. Reward levels that feature Four Tree sets include all four possible trees in the specified denomination.
The coins below show the Shire Year 1404 (Elm), 1405 (Willow), 1406 (Oak), and 1407 (Pine) variants in each denomination, displayed right to left. The Four Trees of different denominations are available in certain reward levels (#5, #6, and #9). In other levels, the years and trees of Shire coins included will be random. All coins above the Farthings denomination are inscribed with the date, "Shire, Abode of the Hobbits," and the denomination. All coins are inscribed in Tengwar.
"I am shocked at the speed in at which this was fulfilled. This ended a week ago and it's in my hands! Speed aside the product is phenomenal these coins could be used as currency for a real country." - Mike, a backer for our A Game of Thrones™ gaming coins
We pride ourselves on our lightning fast Kickstarter fulfillment. Within a few days of the end of this Kickstarter, we will send out all surveys to obtain shipping information for you. Check your email or log in to Kickstarter starting December 1 to find that survey.
We are confident that the first 300 customers who return their surveys within one week will receive our products by Christmas! (valid for US customers only). We may even be able to provide more products or faster shipments, but we want to keep our goals realistic.
We have attractive new packaging for our coins! Sets #1 and #2 open up to display information on each coin:
We will also include hand-stamped envelopes with custom Shire Post stamps with each order, ready to be addressed, sealed, and gifted! Depending on where the coins come from, the envelopes will have different postmarks. For example, set #2 is postmarked from our interdimensional fulfillment center at Southlinch, Breeland on the day of Yule in Shire Year 1415. We leave the "Forward To" blank for you!
"Middle-earth," "Shire," "The Hobbit," and "The Lord of the Rings," and the characters, events, items, and places therein are trademarks of the Saul Zaentz Company dba Middle-earth Enterprises (”SZC”) and are used, under license, by Maringer Studios LLC dba Shire Post Mint
Risks and challenges
If you have backed any of our other projects you will know that our risks are very low and that we fulfill faster than most. We have been making fantasy coins for fifteen years. This is not our first trip around the block and we have already invested very heavily in the materials and tooling for this project. Some of the coins themselves are already made, and others will be in process as the Kickstarter proceeds. Barring a worldwide calamity we expect to start shipping rewards in the order that backers respond to their surveys, within a week of the end of this campaign. The benefit to you as the backer is that your Middle-earth coinage will be shipped in time for the Yuletide gifting season, AND that the sets will come with gift envelopes bearing stamps and postmarks showing that it originated in Middle-earth! The only risks are those imposed by the real-world postal system, and the delays that may be encountered in international shipping.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
