Project Funding Update:
We did it!!!! We have reached our Phase One Goal with a little time left to spare. Now we embark upon our STRETCH GOAL. We need an additional $10,000 to fund Phase Two-the printing and shipping of "Firenze's Light". Any funds we receive beyond our Phase One Goal of $10,780 will get us started on our Phase Two Funding. So let's keep it going and see how far we can get while the clock is still ticking!!!! Thanks for your support!!!
About This Project:
What if the books you read your children empowered them and built their self-worth? What if the stories they heard encouraged them to look within themselves and express their unique gifts? When I became a mother to my daughters, I struggled to find books that would inspire them to recognize their inner beauty. I searched for books that presented challenges using compassion and empathy. I wanted to read them stories of love, unity, empowerment and optimism and I wanted them to be entertained and engaged at the same time. So I began writing my own.
"Firenze's Light" is a picture book for three to seven year-olds. It is the first in a series of books that will have the aforementioned qualities at their core. Firenze, a firefly, does not like her light. How can she when it makes it nearly impossible to play a good game of Hide and Seek? Covering her light with a skirt she fashions from leaves, Firenze hopes her friends will forget all about her light. Instead she finds herself lonely and sad. Then she meets Kirie, a beetle who makes magnificent art using his giant pincers. See how he encourages Firenze to let her light shine for all the world to see in this inspiring story that reminds us to make the most of our gifts.
What We Already Have:
We have an illustrator. Angela Li will create expressive and mesmerizing illustrations that will breathe life into the story. Here is an example of a rough character sketch for "Firenze's Light":
An example of Angela's previous work:

We have a finished, edited manuscript. I began work on this manuscript in 2009. It has since been edited and revised several times.
We have a printing company we have been working with to solidify our budget and estimated production time. They work with major publishing houses to produce professional-grade books you would expect to see in a bookstore or library. Our goal is to make a beautiful, hard-bound, full-color publication using off-set printing and sustainable materials.
We have YOU! A community of people who have been searching for these types of books and want to see them made. Which brings us to.....
What We Need From You:
Your contribution to our campaign will support:
illustrations and book layout
5% fee for using Kickstarter, as well as 2%-5% fee for using Amazon to process credit/debit card donations.
rewards and shipping for donors
should we exceed our goal, the excess funding will be used for printing and shipping costs.
We need $20,000 to fund our entire project. This Kickstarter will fund the illustration and layout of the book. If we go beyond our goal, we will use additional funds to get the book printed and shipped. If needed, we will launch a second Kickstarter once the illustrations are complete to cover the cost of printing and shipping. Let's see if we can do it in one!!!!
How Kickstarter Works:
Kickstarter brings people together to share in the goal of seeing
exciting projects become realized by picking pledges to support the
project. Kickstarter is also an "all or nothing" event. No funds will be transferred to us until the closing date of the fundraiser AND ONLY if the full goal of $10,780 is completely met.
So it is important that if you like what you see here and want to have beautiful, inspiring, empowering books for our kids, donate what you can and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
A Note About Rewards:
Should we need to do our fundraising in two phases, our rewards will be available in two phases as well. We project that it will take 9 months for Angela to complete the illustrations. When this phase is complete, we will be able to make the e-book, magnets and the prints. These rewards should be available February 2014. Printing and shipping of the book will take another three to four months. We will have book rewards available when that is complete (appx.May 2014). Additionally, we will be offering a variety of illustrations for our prints, this way when you opt for a reward with multiple prints, you will receive an assortment of illustrations, not just one illustration in various sizes.
If you have any questions at all about the project, about where your money will go, or if you have ideas or suggestions of ways to collaborate please get in touch. You can email me at ShineYourLightBooks@gmail.com.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

Risks and challenges
Our only foreseeable challenge is acquiring enough funding to see the project through. In order to create a high-quality book, we must be able to pay for printing and shipping costs. I have already taken the steps to get quotes and delivery estimates from printers that work with traditional book publishers. Should those quotes vary by the time we are ready to print, or it takes us longer than anticipated to raise the funds to print and ship, the book may not be completed by Spring 2014. It is our full intention to see this project through to the end, despite any challenges that may arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
