Ten Candles is a tragic horror time-based storytelling game. Through cooperative storytelling, it is up to you and your friends to tell this dark tale. The story of a sunless apocalypse, and the final hours of those who fall victim to it.
The sky has darkened, and the sun is nowhere to be seen. Worse still, They are on the hunt, whatever They are. But this isn't a story about Them. This is a story about what happens in the dark. What happens when doomed survivors try to light up their little corner of the world and do something meaningful within it in the few hours they have left. This is a story of desperation, and what happens when those in the darkness find that their lights are flickering low.
Through this game, you will tell the terrible and harrowing story of a group of individuals fighting for survival in a darkened world, fleeing shadowed adversaries, and in the end succumbing to them. You will share a story of these victims, and explore together their final hours.
This is no survival horror game, where the question is "will you die?" It's not about whether the characters fall to the darkness or emerge as survivors. There are no survivors. Not here. Instead, it provides the stage upon which you will act out the final moments in the lives of a group of people destined to die; to see them pushed to the very brink of terror, madness, and sorrow. It is a game of loss, yes, but it is also a game of hope.
That hope will live on, even in the end. But hope can be lost when those who guard it are pushed to that edge. It is in those moments that the darkness around becomes the darkness within, and that is when They have truly won.
This campaign will be funding the first softcover print run of Ten Candles, a project that has undergone three years of development and playtesting. The game is written, designed, and complete. This Kickstarter project is to fund the editing, art, layout, and printing to ensure that the final product is as high quality a rulebook as possible.
As a part of this campaign I will also be releasing a limited edition hardcover version of the book that will only be printed through this Kickstarter project! My hope with these hardcover versions is to provide a special memento for those of you who want to be strong supporters of my first ever game project.
In addition to funding the print run of Ten Candles this project will also fund a small run of customized dice. Several backer reward levels include these dice. Ten of the dice are black and function as the communal player die pool, with a custom face for the 6 (success) and the 1 (failure). Five of the dice are white and function as Hope dice, with a custom face for the 6 and 5 (both successes). The rest of the sides are blank. Below is a mockup of what the dice will look like.

Ten Candles is played by the light of ten tea light candles. Each player has a number of player cards depicting their traits, goal, and brink - a dark trait that denotes what the character would be capable of if pushed to the brink of despair.
The game takes place over the course of ten or fewer scenes which players take turns framing, setting up and expanding upon every time the scenes change.
This is a cooperative storytelling game. Unlike some games where the gamemaster is the sole storyteller, in Ten Candles everyone equally contributes to the story. Every time the players face a Conflict, they have the opportunity to narrate what comes next.
Conflicts are resolved by players rolling a pool of dice that diminishes in size as the game continues. Though success early on is likely, as the game approaches it's final scenes Conflicts get more difficult, and the power of narration slips from the hands of the players into the hands of the gamemaster.

While this is my first gaming project with Kickstarter, Ten Candles is far from the last. I have a ton of ideas I am excited to share with you, but all things must start somewhere. If you like this project please check out the backer rewards and share this project with your friends.
Risks and challenges
As this is my first Kickstarter project, as well as the first roleplaying game I have published, I am expecting some challenges with publication to ensure that I get the highest quality product possible.
