About this project
Affordable Art has never been more Personal! Matchbox Me represents my desire to provide my person-specific Box Art commissions to more people, more affordably. It's like Art Therapy, On Demand.
Get a theme-based, readymade, one-of-a-kind box or request a box be made specifically for you or someone you love around a personal theme! With Matchbox Me, I use dollhouse miniatures, collage ephemera, and found objects arranged inside vintage matchbox structures, to produce art that is connective.
Two years ago, I started playing with the genre of Box Art...
What is Box Art?
Often referred to as Assemblage (and pioneered by the great Joseph Cornell), Box Art usually involves a wooden box artfully filled with various objects that, when combined, reveal a deeper meaning. My objects of choice range from dollhouse miniatures to vintage Barbie accessories to old family photographs to plastic flowers, found bottles, and humorous advertisements. (You can see some of my boxes to-date here - flash site): http://www.sherrymills.com/#/boxes/)
I made my first Box Art piece for my Grandmother for her 90th Birthday. From that experience, I learned how much I truly enjoy making person-specific works... Researching and interviewing a person and pulling out aspects of their dreams, hopes, and interests that I wish to speak to in their Box Art arrangement.
I acquired a few commissioned Box Art projects from some incredible New York characters. I unveiled their 'Portrait' Boxes before them at a gallery show in Chelsea in 2011: http://www.sherrymills.com/#/shows/ Born of the moving responses I received from these initial recipients, and given that many attendees at my show took great delight in the boxes and wanted to commission one for themselves, but couldn't afford the cost...
I started to question if there might be a way to produce smaller scale, more affordable versions of my boxes, but still using the 'commission' type model.
That is, still 'intuiting' box arrangements for one person at a time. Once I discovered vintage matchboxes, everything came into focus, and the start of a system was born.
Matchbox Me is formed around something I'm calling "Art Response".
Did you just go through a breakup? Is your Mom sick? Are you gaga for camels? Is your brother crazy for croquet and red things and his birthday is approaching? Are you building a new business and want uniquely personal gifts for your staff? Do you have a fear that's in the way of your success? Do you seek health, time freedom, a new lifestyle, a release from the thoughts in your head, or a new spin on life? A reason to laugh? Or maybe you just want to be surprised…
Just fill out a profile online, tell me what's going on for you or someone you love, and let me "answer" you with art arranged inside of a vintage matchbox.
What gets shipped to you is an aesthetic reminder of something personally meaningful that can greet you when you open your eyes in the morning, when you grab your keys to head out, or as you sit down at your office desk. Your Matchbox Me box can serve as your vision board, your law of attraction device, your mirror into yourself, or simply as a decorative accent piece.
Art can be the best of emotional anchors. Yet art that is person-specific can even be transformational.
My lifelong exploration (and sometimes even certification) in alternative healing modalities - an exploration brought on by a deep need to overcome my own mental challenges - has equipped me with some fun intuitive skills. These fold into my process of "discovering your arrangement".
Not only may you request a personalized box at Matchbox Me, but you'll also be able to search for readymade boxes, categorized by theme.
For example, you'll be able to search for a "golf" box or a "marriage" box or an "animal rights" box just as much as for more obscure, curated titles like "What's for Dinner?" or "I am from Orion" or "The Cowardice of Control". The themes grow and expand over time, and there is the opportunity for the site to become a go-to for affordable, emotional art purchase!
What am I going to do with the money, you ask?
With the funds of a successful campaign, I will be able to order all the supplies I need to create a substantial product line of theme-based Boxes! Even more importantly, I'll be able to order some additional supplies for creating unique works for all my backers! Supplies will include dollhouse miniatures, vintage matchboxes and matchbooks, packing and shipping supplies, collage materials and ephemera, and also organizing structures for that ephemera and all my objects in the studio. (Without proper organization, it can get pretty crazy in the world of itty-bitty things!)
With this funding boost thanks to all my backers, I will have a studio that functions like a well-oiled machine for the development of Matchbox Me, and I'll have a huge new line of product! So much value will be obtained simply through the process of creating these initial works for my supporters, and receiving their feedback. I'll get to flesh out the most effective strategies for presenting this model to the world in a larger way. I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to keep my pricing so low once I go live with Matchbox Me post-campaign, so if you're wanting a box, now would be a great time to get one! Thank you for considering being a part of the start!

You might be wondering...Who Collects Sherry Mills?
Collectors include a handful of National Bestselling Authors, among them Keith Ferrazzi (of Never Eat Alone), Howard Bloom (former publicist for Prince, considered “the next Stephen Hawking”), and JP Farrell (The Metaphysician behind Manifesting Michelangelo); Neil McLellan (producer for The Prodigy, Oasis, and Madonna); Claudio Nardi, Architect of the new Museum of Modern Art in Krakow; and Boogaloo Blues hit star Johnny Colon.
Allow me to build this model with you in mind. Let me make you a Box!
Your support will be planting a seed for the growth of Art Response as a new way of opening up perspective and decorating with art that is connective! Thank you for any support, for spreading the word about Matchbox Me, and I very much welcome your feedback!
PLEASE NOTE: I WILL ship internationally! I will assume all shipping costs.
Risks and challenges
Although it may not seem the case, considerable time, thought, and cost go into the making of each of my boxes. In an effort to make the boxes unquestionably affordable, I have kept their pricing extremely low. In this initial stage of my business - where I've not yet the capital to buy in larger quantities or at wholesale on miniatures and supplies - I'd run the risk of just breaking even with this campaign, with funds being used solely for the fulfillment of backer boxes. Meaning, I'd have nothing left for developing my theme-based line and acquiring studio organizational structures. However, the way I plan to tackle this challenge is by using my existing stock of vintage miniatures and collage remnants dating back to my childhood, as well as the many vintage matchboxes already in my possession after the in-depth online search and purchase that has framed my last few months! I'm happy for the chance to provide my initial backers with boxes as affordable as they may ever be. I'll be able to fulfill on their rewards without issue or delay, and will have garnered enough in excess of the additional costs associated with that fulfillment to stock my studio and create my new line!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
