Have a question?
Since our website is gone now, here you can find alternative operating systems for Sherlybox, to make use of it as general purpose server:
@Clemens we have investors and ultimately it's their call what to do with the company IP. It's unlikely they will approve going open source after they poured quite a bit of money into it. Sherlybox is my favorite project and personally I will do everything possible to keep it alive.
@B_Watching own server is best if you know Linux systems. StoAmigo recently rebranded into Axel, I like their software and I think it will work nicely with Sherlybox - but it's up to them.
Very sorry to hear this... but I wasn't very surprised looking at the progress during the last 12 months and seeing that you started a new job couple of weeks ago (congrats!).
Would it be possible of you to open source your software build for sherlybox and like put it on gitlab (or something equivalent) so that your sherlybox lives on via the community?
We could maybe build a peer2peer-vpn underneath and keep a sherlybox-mesh alive without the need for a dedicated (centralized) server (as we can all see why that is a bad idea coming end of July).
Oh and the 3D-Designs for the Sherlybox would also be really cool. Then we could adapt the fitting sheme of the banana pi to other (more powerfull) SOC-boards like the raspberry pi 3 b ... important thing here is building a board into the Sherlybox-housing which will receive linux mainline kernel support.
Please, don't let your Sherlybox/Sher.ly-concept die just like that.
Very sad to hear this :-(
Out of the two methods for afterlife of the device, which would you recommend?
Due to Ks rules change can no longer publish updates. Here is an update about Sherlybox'es future: https://sher.ly/en/blog-en/the-end-and-how-to-move-forward/
@Richard Pairing proces is a sensitive operation: the device does not know it's you.
Internet today is a not safe place and we do not rely on login an password anymore, but also strong certificate authentication. Please get in touch with our Helpdesk via www.sher.ly website and we will get your Sherlybox up and running.
I have downloaded and created the image file to the sherlybox and it will still not pair. It would not pair before version 2 and it will not pair afterwards. I fail to see the need for pairing and should just be able to connect to it as a "cloud" device. I am wiling to work with you to get it to pair but not for long.
So far it has been a brick, an expensive one at that and I do not have high hopes that it will do more than that. We will see....
After placing the new image file, according to your instructions, it only boots and then flashes a whit light every second. Upon performing the pairing command from the desktop app and touching the logo on the top of the box, it never begins to flash quickly, indicating that it is trying to pair.
Prior to upgrading the image to version 2, it would attempt to pair by flashing but your documentation states that I needed to upgrade the image to version 2 in order to pair with the version 2 desktop app before it would complete the pairing.
@Clemens I'm looking at mobile UI internal beta right now, at first stage we are developing mobile Web client, as it will work on any mobile platform from the start.
Mobile app is all about deeper integration, we are looking closely to new Files native app for iOS11. To make it right we need more information about use cases. Typical questions are:
What do you want from mobile Sher.ly app?
Is it access to all your digital resources on Sher.ly devices?
Is it more about collaboration control, inviting new project members, removing others?
Is it uploading files from your phone to your Sherlybox?
Is it all the above?
Please describe your desired use and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
June last year you stated to have a mobile app on the roadplan which would have been released together with 2.0 but we never heard about the app again... any news?
Hi @Adam, Matt's Sherlybox is up and running, I'm sure we can get yours too ;)
Perhaps we can make pairing easier, but we didn't want to compromise security of the process leaving Sherlybox open for grabs over the network while in pairing mode - that's why it must be initiated from the app and the time window is open for 30seconds
Sorry, I had forgotten to update the firmware of the SD card. No longer shows the orange lights.
However, getting the pairing (touching/holding for 3 secs) to work with the client application tends to be tricky.
I'm going to also echo Matt's comments. I've downloaded Sher.ly 2.0 but the procedure to add/pair Sherlybox always resorts to "Sherlybox not found". The pairing seems really difficult to accomplish. Currently, if not touching the top of the device.. it blinks 6 white steady blinking lights and then 4 orange fast blinking lights. I don't think I found a light pattern mentioned in the Forums/Knowledge Base.
I have followed the pairing process over and over, and sometimes it works, other times the light up top just stops turning on all together. I have emailed you to hopefully get this situation resolved.
Actually lights work independently from touch. At the end of my blog post I've linked below there is a video detailing pairing process. The key is the proper order of actions, for security pairing action must be initiated from the Sher.ly Desktop app, updated to a latest version.
If you have trouble please get in touch with us directly at email@example.com and we will get this sorted out
Thank you for the reply, I upgraded the software, everything seemed to have gone ok in writing to the card, however when I try and pair, the light just turns off in the logo and never comes back. I am holding it for the 3 seconds as instructed. The only way to get the light to come back and flash the white LED is to unplug and wait for boot sequence. Any suggestions?
It's been awhile since we shipped out Sherlybox'es, software needs to be upgraded:
Send your email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll get your lifetime subscription assigned.
So I am a weird one and never opened up my Sherly box or used it until now, tried to do all the steps but there is no indication I was a Kickstarter backer and all I get is the guest license. I used my kickstarter email, downloaded v2 and I can't figure this thing out, any suggestions/help would be appreciated.
We’ve prepared a updated Sherlybox firmware with 5GHz 11ac WiFi module support and remote pairing procedure. Please download it from https://app.sher.ly and follow this manual to burn new Sherlybox V2 system image to SD card (8GB minimum size):
Hi Backers! Sherlybox V2 software update is LIVE! ;) https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sherly/sherlybox-a-private-and-shareable-cloud-on-your-de/posts/1889530
@Gary Sherlybox works with Sher.ly 1.6, we are working on system upgrade for 2.0 and Debian migration. LED signals are explained in Knowledge Base: https://sher.ly/en/sherlybox-blinking-led-lights-meaning/
@Clemens I realize you wish for upgrade, but let me point out we are giving it away for free, while most other hardware campaigns I see is asking Backers for more money either for logistics or additional features.
Company has to make money, and that is it's reason to be. Backers will get upgrade for free as I promised and we are not asking for more money, just patience.
You can't. Sher.ly 2.0 is up unto now only the updated client software. The software for Sherlybox is still lacking an update. You cannot connect the new client software with the old Sherlybox software. The new Sherlybox software on Debian base was supposed to be released last August ...
This makes Sherlybox quite useless!
Which isn't a surprise since in my case it has been offline since almost a year now - very frustrating! If it bugs me too much I'll have to invest my (rare) spare time to set up something else on it like Nextcloud. But then why should anybody use Sher.ly and even pay for such "service"?
I have a problem trying to use the sherylbox after Sher.yl 2.0 came out, somehow I am unable to connect. The LED is orange and I've tried restarting it, using the wireless or wired connection but to no avail. Please kindly advise. Thanks!
@Creator - thanks, I'll get one of those and get the box back up and running. See you back online soon I hope!
Thanks for trying out version 2.0, let us know what you make of it - we are waiting in the chat at our website https://sher.ly
Power unit is std 5V 2A 3.5/1.3 mm connector, negative outside - just few bucks on eBay, like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/5V-2A-AC-DC-Adapter-Power-Supply-Charger-3-5mm-x-1-3mm-For-Foscam-CCTV-IP-Camera-/281795813056
Hi guys, I'm looking forward to the new SW. For various reasons, I'd packed the box away for the past year and haven't used it.
And while setting the box up, I discovered that I seem to have misplaced the power adapter. Is it possible to purchase a new one?
If not can you at least tell me it specifications? If I recall correctly it's 5 V at2A, but I can't remember if centre jack positive or negative.
As long as you keep your Kickstarter email you won't be charged.
It's not possible upfront anyway, you need to consciously add payment card first.
As we have to create another login, how can we be certain that we will be recognized ?
Let me know, thanks.
Not to worry: Sher.ly 2.0 is a free upgrade for all Backers. Kickstarter lifetime license applies
One question, don't tell me that we will have to pay for Sher.ly 2.0 ??
The 1.6 was not at all working well and, as some other first backers , I was really waiting for a good update.
That one and many more improvements are coming soon
Just installed the new Sher.ly 2.0. Nice improvement. When will we be able to connect/add our Sher.ly device in the application. I would prefer to have this device as my primary storage instead of my computer.
Hello Backers, Sher.ly 2.0 is out! Read more about it:
Happy New Year!
Hi Clemens, year is not over yet ;)
We are working as we speak, tomorrow is a working day too. It feels like back to these days: https://www.youtube.com/watch…
only with software and someone keeps adding new things to handle.
We will make good on our promise, thanks for following!
I kind of feel like the only one bugging and getting on your nerves about this (maybe because I still have high hopes which I don't want to give up yet) ...
any news on sher.ly 2.0 and the app?
It's been pretty quiet (I follow on fb, twitter, blog,...) and on your blog the only thing you write about is how sher.ly can help with this or that but no news about the 2.0 release or which milestones still lie ahead and how the progress is. Was it supposed to come out this year?
We also have very cool chat right on our website https://sher.ly and one of us is always there ;)
@Clemens we are publishing updates on 2.0 progress our blog: https://sher.ly/en/blog/
Kickstarter comments does not really work for two way communication, best to follow our twitter https://twitter.com/sherlyfiles or Fb: https://www.facebook.com/sherlyfiles/
Cybersecurity Forum was good for networking, we are working on a feature set for secure data sharing for business and gov. administration
hmm... two months later any news would be appreciated...
How was the cybersecurity in Krakau? What new impact will it bring to sherly?
About that "August"date... you have 1 minute left ;)
no seriously, being subscribed in the beta tester I have received a couple of advertisement emails regarding why you built sherly 2.0 ... but haven't seen anything else yet. I'm shortly before flashing debian to the sherlybox and installing a nextcloud fileserver on it myself (worked on the odroid xu3) but with the upcoming 2.0 I had to keep myself patient in order to see the progress and finally be able to use the app... I just hope the waiting was worth it.
Clemens, you're yanking my chain.. ;)
But seriously, there are more things coming.
Oh boy! The summer is going to be great... and I might even turn on my Sherlybox again :)
@ Clemens: (not) coincidentally: also August. New website too. More very soon
Supergood news! In August?! I can't wait. Thank you!
Any ETA (I mean besides "later") on an app?
Hi Backers, quick update: Debian is a go! ;)
I've published two updates urging Backers to update their shipping information:
Oct 18 2015
I've also send you two PM messages April 13th and April 19th about upcoming shipping deadline urging you to provide your confirmed address.
There was no reply, until Jun 1.
We've collected $16 for shipping while actual cost for single Sherlybox unit to Japan is $150. The difference is $134 and we did cover that bill for each our Backers in Asia, which replied in time for batch delivery. You did not.
I've decided to refund your pledge, I hope you will reconsider your attitude and style of communication.
You have the item ready and our address, but you refuse to deliver.
And you're asking us to pay extra $134 for shipping or "to self-pickup the item" after the project is 1.5 years delayed.
Delay is one thing, but withholding our money and giving the impossible options: pay extra $134 or self-pickup (in different continent) and refusing to deliver is just a dishonest practice.
Please resolve soon.
@ David Asikin: we do read your messages, just do not appreciate being called "serious asshole" when you do not have it your way.
I will get to your case, be patient.
The company refused to deliver the item and made excuse that address weren't submitted on time. In order to deliver, they requested extra $134 payment (a figure came out of the blue?).
After sending screenshot evidence that address were submitted on time and confirmed, they stop responding.
Anyone in the same boat? How can I report this to Kickstarter?
@Sher.ly team, thanks for your update but is that mean you will not create your own app for mobile phones. I dont understand how to and dont want to install third party software (Plex) to my computer. My Sher.ly box still not connect to my computer due to my waiting your own app for my mobile phone. I want to easy to upload my photo and video automatic when i am home. What i can do?
