Set two-hundred years into the future, 'Shepherd Journey of the Time Walker' tells the story of Byron Hayne and his brother Benjamin. In a world where all modern technology suddenly vanished overnight. The remains of humanity have soldiered on to reclaim the world. Yet they are not alone. A group of super humans called "Shepherds "use their powers to help fan the flames of the human spirit.
All is not well however, not all shepherds believe in saving humanity. In fact there is one man whose sole aim is to end humanity's reign on the earth. As this man and Byron set to square off in a battle for the fate of the world, his older brother Benjamin must sort out a prophetic vision in which he witnesses his own death through his brother's eyes.
Can these two brothers save the world? Can Benjamin stop his own death?
What Are Shepherds?
Unlike most typical super powered beings, Shepherds operated as a secret society. They guided their actions in the best interest of humanity. They have at their whim, collapsed empires and raised new ones from the ashes. Human stagnation was their enemy. What they were trying to push humanity toward is unknown.
Shepherds as a species up until technology vanished were unknown by humans. Legends were told of men and women throughout history that managed incredible feats. (Not always physical) Now out in the open, Shepherds work alongside humans to help build cities, heal the sick and protect humans.
Their powers are increases in speed, strength and agility. They can reliably fight between six and eight regular humans with no real risk of losing. Some unique ones can summon abilities such as energy pulses or shape changing, etc. However, this is not without risk. In order to use these powers they have to over extend their bodies. This is done by increasing adrenaline, body temperature and blood pressure to produce the energy it takes to summon them. A shepherd can die if they overuse their powers.
The Human Condition:
Without any technology, Humanity was forced to abandon its cities and towns. Most headed for coastal lands. Some groups have established new settlements. Those places then reach out to their roaming nomadic brethren to swell their numbers to ensure survival. It's not easy. Set against a threat from a shepherd building an army to extinguish them, it may be only a matter of time before they are snuffed out, like a candle in a sudden breeze.
Why this story?
Well, I've always had a thing for science fiction. However, the genre seems over focused on hopeless dystopian nightmares. Full of fear and self loathing. The future outside of anything but Star Trek seems built to be a social commentary on our weaknesses as societies or people. I decided I wanted to show human strength against adversity.
Aided by the Shepherds, humans have already begun to thrive and find their strength before the story begins. It's not about struggling to survive. This story is about those with the power to change the world and how they choose to wield it.
Hope For The Project
This is passion project that began in 2015 as just a simple dream. I just wanted to tell a good story. It's been a long road with a lot of helping hands and encouraging words. What started out conceptually as an audio drama in 2016 is now fully realized as a comic. With the help of artist Chris Winters, I have already produced a prequel comic (published through Amazon) called 'Shepherd: Storm Reborn' that should give you a sense of the work I aim to create if this is fully funded.
This project itself will contain the first three issues of a ten issue story arc called Journey Of The Time Walker. Chris and I are already through most of the penciling phase of issue #1. So we're already hard at work pushing though.
You can find behind the scenes details and news updates on my website link at the bottom of this cover.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge is just paying the artist who was gracious enough to pick up this project. As long as that minimum is met, there's no risk this will be unfinished.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
