I’m an artist, and’ve been creatively exploring the I Ching, or 'Zhouyi' for the past twenty-five years, developing a book and card deck based on it, called Becoming Visionary: creating a re-enchanted earth with the transformative power of Zhouyi.
The home page of my site returntotheway.org will give you an instant Zhouyi reading if you want to dive in and explore the process: think of a question which feels important to you which doesn't have a yes/no answer and click here!
(If you get lost, just drop me a line on this page or to firstname.lastname@example.org and I'll see if I can help you through :)
Here's a brief introduction to the Zhouyi...
here's the beginning of my book and chapter excerpts from it...
And here are all the images you'll be getting if you buy a deck.
That page has 64 sub-pages, each of which gives you a big image of the front and back of each card.
(The calligraphy beneath links to two other websites, each with written interpretations on the meaning of the hexagram.)
As I work towards getting a publisher to take on Becoming Visionary, I had the idea of creating a miniaturised prototype of the deck, which is what I’m offering you here.
The 64 6x6cm, full colour, double-sided cards will be in a limited edition of two hundred and fifty decks.
They’ll be in a handmade ‘medicine bag’ style wrapper, accompanied by a set of miniature wands inscribed with lines, along with blank triptych cards for you to create your own imagery on. Also enclosed is a simple start-up guide to using these different elements together.
You’ll be emailed a PDF with more detailed guidelines too, and access to a private facebook group for users of the deck.
I’m so excited to be finally sharing this…and really hoping you can join me as my project takes its first big step from the world of imagination into the world of reality!
Risks and challenges
I haven't done this before!
But many aspects are within my control and just need me to put the hours in. This being the first manifestation of my life’s work, I’m very happy to do so!
Having worked on the Zhouyi for so many years, I've become accustomed to doing lots of thing sixty-four times. This, of course, goes a bit beyond that ~ which is why, even if I get over-funded ~ the edition is definitely limited to 250: with all the hand-production involved, it's the limit of what I can realistically deal with producing myself.
If unforeseen obstacles come up, it's possible that the decks wouldn't be sent off in time for Christmas, which is my intent :)
How soon I can send off all the decks ordered also depends on how many are ordered: if fifty are ~ the minimum to let me reach my £1000 goal ~ I should be able to send them off by mid-December if I put in long days constructing all their separate elements (each deck will take at least an hour of work). If all two hundred and forty are, that deadline wouldn’t be realistic as it'd be a considerably bigger scale and more time-consuming undertaking!
If this is the case, one way I’ll ensure I’m not left with an overwhelming amount to do at the end of the project is by working on creating the decks while it’s live, as soon as it’s clear that the project will definitely be funded.
I'm also about to do a trial printing with the company I've earmarked for the printing, so I'll soon know how the quality comes across - and how accurate their production estimates are, keeping you posted as the process unfolds!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
