Garphill Games, in association with Pixie Games (FR) are proud to bring you this exciting new expansion for the popular Viking saga, Explorers of the North Sea. All previous North Sea titles are also available as add-ons in this campaign. Please see the add-ons section to see exactly which titles are available in each language.
Note: Schwerkraft-Verlag (DE) will be releasing the German version of the expansion early next year.
In Explorers of the North Sea: Rocks of Ruin, new opportunities await daring captains. Recent storms have left
longships torn apart, with their precious cargo scattered across the rocky shores. Meanwhile, rumours of great
fortresses in nearby regions are beginning to spread. Will you be the first to salvage the wrecks, or will you throw
caution to the wind and charge the enemy fortresses for fame and glory?
- Components for an extra player
- 24 New Tiles, making the final map 50% larger
- 3 New Buildings for each player to construct
- 3 New Captain cards for increased variability
- Salvaging Shipwrecks brings greater tension and decision making
- Fortresses add more risk and reward when raiding
- 5 Player Dashboards for managing tokens and buildings
How Does It Change Explorers?
Rocks of Ruin adds new ways to score with salvaging Shipwrecks, building Structures and raiding Fortresses. When placing tiles with a Shipwreck, a token is taken from the supply and placed facedown on the tile. Players may spend an action with 1 Viking to salvage a Shipwreck. They will either find Timber for building Structures, Provisions for additional actions, Battering Rams for raiding with 1 fewer Viking, or precious Gold worth 3 Victory Points at the game's end.
Once players have acquired Timber, they will be able to build up to 3 new Structures during the game. Once constructed, the Mill allows players to deliver Livestock there, rather than making the long journey back to the Mainland. The Workshop allows players to construct Outposts with 1 fewer Viking and the Barracks increases movement for Vikings across land.
Lastly, Fortresses act in a similar way to Settlements. However, their rewards are only revealed once raided. Some offer up to 6 VP. Others offer less, but bring glorious death to those brave warriors.

Group together and save on shipping! For every 10th copy you pledge for, of a commonly valued product, you will get 1 extra copy for free. So pledge for 10 copies of Rocks of Ruin/Fields of Fame/Hall of Heroes/Runesaga and get 1 more for free. Or pledge for 10 copies of Shipwrights/Raiders/Explorers and get 1 more for free. There are a few things to keep in mind for group pledges:
- Group pledges must be for a single-language. One group cannot get a mix of English and French versions
- Group pledges must use an existing Reward Level and use the add-ons prices above. Remember to take the shipping costs of the chosen reward into account
All shipping rates are included in each Reward Level. US, Canada, Australia, NZ, UK, Germany and France all have no additional costs above those shown on each Reward Level. For all other areas, Kickstarter will automatically add any additional cost when selecting your reward.
- Garphill Games will handle production and fulfillment of all English versions
- Pixie Games will handle production and fulfillment of all French versions
When planning for this campaign it became clear there wasn't much room for Stretch Goals. It's always hard to create Stretch Goals for expansions, since a lot of the content is upgraded from the start to match the quality of the base game. Instead of trying to add a lot of unneeded fluff, I decided to just put forward the best possible product from day one. That being said, if there are any suggestions for ways the components can be improved or upgraded during the campaign, I am always eager to hear your ideas.
Since there are no stretch goals, I decided to include the 5 Player Runesaga Extension for free inside the English version of Rocks of Ruin. Also included are 3 new captains cards, 12 more tiles than originally intended, player dashboards and the new fortress tokens (which were planned to be released as a mini expansion).
The North Sea Trilogy is made up of 3 very different, standalone games.
Each of the 3 games also have a few expansions.
- Shipwrights has a mini expansion called The Townsfolk Expansion
- Raiders has 2 expansions called Hall of Heroes and Fields of Fame
- Explorers has 1 expansion called Rocks of Ruin (this campaign)
There is also another expansion called The North Sea Runesaga, which ties all 3 games together in a campaign-like saga. This is for 2-4 players. However, the Rocks of Ruin expansion (EN version) includes a free extension, which takes this up to 5 players.
Risks and challenges
Having crowdfunded games in the past, I realize it can take a while from project start to completion (you getting your games). My goal is to have all games sent out before the end of March 2018. Project backers will be notified should this be delayed.
