What is this project about?
SUDS COUNTY 2: The Boil Over is a feature-length documentary sequel to SUDS COUNTY, USA. Both the original SUDS COUNTY, USA and SUDS COUNTY 2 focus on the craft breweries and brewers of San Diego County, California.
So what’s the story of SUDS COUNTY 2: The Boil Over?
In late 2009 when I was doing the research for the original SUDS COUNTY, USA, no local brewer or industry executive I spoke to would have ever predicted that in less than seven years there would be more than 120 brewhouses in San Diego County. At the time of doing said research, that brewhouse number was less than 30! A lot has changed in a relatively short amount of time and it is this relatively rapidly shifting landscape that has lead me to believe that the time is right for a sequel, hence our plans to make SUDS COUNTY 2: The Boil Over.
In SUDS COUNTY, USA, which was released in the fall of 2012, we examined the rise of the San Diego craft brewing industry within the broader context of the history of brewing in San Diego. A quick historical perspective: up until the original incarnation of Bolt Brewing in Fallbrook in the summer of 1987 -- the first brewery of the county’s “New Brew Wave" -- there had been no beer brewed commercially in the county for some 34 years.
Today, beers brewed in San Diego County are available all over the nation and in a growing number of countries around the world. The “West Coast IPA”/San Diego Pale Ale style that initially put San Diego on the brewing map has now become the most popular craft beer style across the US and is rapidly gaining in popularity in international craft beer circles too. That said, San Diego is not only an “IPA town.” In SUDS COUNTY 2: The Boil Over, we will take a look at some of other styles of beer that are gaining in popularity. Former San Diego brewers who have moved to other parts the nation are now directly influencing brewers in those parts too, in the same way that the former San Diego brewers were inspired by the early craft beer pioneers of the US. We plan on visiting some of these brewers as well as some of San Diego’s breweries' satellite operations that have now been established outside of San Diego.
The nationwide growth of the craft beer industry has caused what was once an overall relatively staid, artisanal business to become a major investment opportunity for more formal outside investors and band wagoners alike. San Diego has not been immune to these forces and some local breweries have now been acquired by national “Big Beer” brewing conglomerates with no doubt more to follow. In addition, “Big Beer,” faced with a reduction in sales of their major consumer beer brands and subsequent loss of revenue have in recent times more aggressively infiltrated liquor store and supermarket shelf space under the guise of craft breweries they have purchased and/or in the creation of faux craft brands. This action has significantly diminished shelf space that was not too long ago available for beer from smaller craft breweries and newcomers. And it is not just on the shelves…as I write this, there is a major kerfuffle in the local San Diego craft beer community over a former craft brewery from Oregon, now wholly owned by a “Big Beer” conglomerate, attempting to build and operate a “craft” brewery in Downtown San Diego’s East Village. Yes folks, the times they are a changin’ and in SUDS COUNTY 2: The Boil Over we will certainly be examining these changes too.
While our goal is to make an entertaining documentary, SUDS COUNTY 2: The Boil Over will also be an opportunity to document an important historical moment in San Diego craft beer community that will also hopefully allow future brewers to look back -- at a period where the sands started to shift a little more quickly -- and hopefully be able to put the events of their time within a broader perspective. Hopefully, you share our passion to have this story told.
What breweries can we expect to be featured in SUDS COUNTY 2?
We don’t want to give away all of our secrets, but we plan to shoot at least a majority of the active and in-progress craft breweries in San Diego, as well as with some of the related businesses like equipment manufacturers and hop farmers. Our film will also capture stories of how not just the beers, but also San Diego-trained brewers and some of the larger San Diego breweries are expanding into previously untapped areas of the world to expand craft brewing’s footprint. As with most documentaries, our story will evolve over the course of shooting and editing, especially if there are any dramatic shifts in the craft brewing landscape over the next year.
To be absolutely clear, while we’re partnering with local breweries for some of our Kickstarter rewards, the reason we’re turning to all of you to help fund our film is that we want to maintain the journalistic integrity of not having our film be a funded commercial for various breweries, or be beholden to depict a subject in a false light. A pay-to-play model would compromise our ability to tell the best possible stories about San Diego beer.
What is the timeline of making (and releasing) SUDS COUNTY 2?
With a successful Kickstarter, we will begin filming in June. Filming will continue into the winter, and editing the film will become our focus around December 2016. Our hope is that we will have a finished film by early Spring 2017. While we don’t know yet the exact release date for the completed film, we promise that you, our backers, will get your copies before it goes on sale to the general public, likely in Summer 2017.
We are not planning a theatrical release for SUDS COUNTY 2, which would simply delay when we can get you your copy of the film. We plan to only release the film in digital formats for home viewing -- no DVDs or Blu-rays, simply a file for you to download without any DRM so that you can watch it on the device of your choosing whenever you want to watch it. It cuts down on our overhead, and it gets the film in your hands faster. We will shoot the film in 4K, and we plan to release it in 4K, where available. If you back at the $15 level or higher, you’ll also get a 720P, DRM-free download of the original SUDS COUNTY, USA, which you’ll be able to redeem in June after backer surveys have been sent out.
But like all Kickstarter projects, this is an all-or-nothing effort. Every donation enables us to make a better movie. Even $1 backers help us because the more backers we have, the larger our presence on Kickstarter. You can also increase your donation after you make the initial pledge or switch reward tiers.
But if we do not hit our funding goal before the deadline, your credit card will not be charged, and we will not make the film. It wouldn’t be right of us to ask you as a backer to commit your hard-earned money to a project that doesn’t have enough funding to actually complete and release a film.
What rewards can I get for backing SUDS COUNTY 2?
While Kickstarter prohibits us from actually giving you any of the delicious beer that will be featured in this film, we’ve come up with a lot of great SUDS COUNTY 2 merchandise that will only be produced for this Kickstarter campaign. We’ve also partnered with many San Diego breweries for exclusive SUDS 2 brew days that we think you’ll really like; these collaborations are all limited quantities, so act fast!
NOTE: For all reward tiers $50+, shipping fees are NOT INCLUDED in your pledge. Rather than have you pay a generic overpriced shipping fee per country, your specific shipping cost will be calculated separately when we send out backer surveys thru Backerkit. Doing this will save you money on shipping fees, and we can make sure that we raise enough money to actually be able to make the film. As a ballpark estimate, domestic shipping will likely vary between $5-15 depending on destination and number of physical items, and between $15-50 for international shipping. If you purchase add-on items after the campaign, that will also increase your shipping costs.
You can become a project backer for just $1 (The Taster). For becoming a backer, you’ll get exclusive updates and photos that you may never see anywhere else. We’ll also include your name in a list of Kickstarter backers on our website.
All backers at $10 or more (The Half Pint) will get a download for SUDS COUNTY 2: The Boil Over once it is finished in 2017, plus the $1 Taster level rewards. We promise that as a backer, you will get SUDS COUNTY 2 before it’s made available to the general public. Early bird backers will also get to save a few bucks for taking the leap with us at the start of our campaign.
For just $5 more (the $15 level -- The Pint), you’ll also get a download of SUDS COUNTY, USA, the original film about the history of brewing in San Diego County and the evolution of San Diego’s breweries. SUDS COUNTY, USA downloads will be made available shortly after the conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign when backer surveys are sent out.
If you contribute at $25 or higher (The Imperial Pint), we’ll include your name (real names only, please) in the film’s credits in our "Thanks to our Kickstarter backers" section. You’ll also get all rewards from the $15 (Pint) level.
For $50 or more (The Bomber), you will get an exclusive SUDS COUNTY 2 branded vinyl-wrapped, steel paddle bottle opener AND we will list your name on IMDB on the page for our film! Plus you get all the $25 (Imperial Pint) rewards.
If you back our Kickstarter at $100 or higher (The Tall Boy), you’ll get your choice of one of two SUDS COUNTY 2 t-shirts designs AND a pair of SUDS COUNTY 2 IPA glasses, in addition to all of the $50 (Bomber) rewards. You will also be welcome to post company signage at our San Diego premiere (date TBD). To be very clear, contributing at this level does not mean that we will include your company in the film outside of the list of credits or affect our editorial decisions in any manner. This is simply an advertising opportunity for your company to reach our film’s backers.
Ever wanted a producing credit on a feature film? Contribute at $2,500 or higher (The Half Barrel) and you’ll be listed as an Associate Producer on the film and on IMDB, plus you’ll get 4 tickets to the San Diego premiere and all rewards from the $1000 tier (The Mini Keg). Or, back us at $10,000 or higher (The Full Keg) and you will become an Executive Producer on the film and on IMDB! When will I get my rewards?
We are working with Backerkit to make sure that you get the rewards that you pledged for in a timely manner, as well as give you opportunities to up your pledge after the campaign ends and to purchase extra SUDS COUNTY 2 items like our t-shirts, bottle openers, and glasses. Within a couple weeks after the close of the campaign, you’ll get an email from Backerkit with a survey asking for information from you, such as your mailing address and shirt sizes (where applicable). For backers at $15+, completing this survey process will include a link to your download for SUDS COUNTY, USA so you can start watching the original and start the anticipation for the completion of the sequel! For the $10+ backers, Backerkit will retain your information so that we can send you an email to claim your download of SUDS COUNTY 2 once it’s ready! The SUDS COUNTY 2 downloads will likely be ready in late Spring or Summer 2017.
For all physical items, we’ll be manufacturing them immediately after the surveys are all completed so that we make sure that everyone gets the shirt size they want and that we have the best address to ship your items. At that time, we’ll also calculate your total shipping cost based on what physical items you’ll be getting and you’ll pay that as a separate charge from your Kickstarter pledge.
For backers who purchase a special, limited quantity package, you’ll get an additional email from us with details on how to redeem your package.
We are also working with Amplifier for the printing of our t-shirts, as well as the fulfillment and shipping of our physical rewards to all of you lovely backers.

So where is all this money going to? Surely it can't cost $250K to make a movie!
$250,000 may sound like a lot to many of you, but by Hollywood studio standards, $250K is simply a line item for flying stars in the company jet to the premiere. For us, it’s the minimum it will take for our award-winning crew to film the story. All of our crew are working below their typical rates because they believe in the project. We’ve done our best to keep the budget as low as possible to let us tell the complete story we need to tell, while making sure that we’re not half-assing any aspect of the production.
Our funding goal incorporates the fees charged by Kickstarter (8-9%), the rewards we’re producing and our fulfillment partners’ fees (3-5%). So that means we’ll end up with closer to $225K to work with for a planned 60 days of filming in 6+ countries at well over 100 breweries around the world.

What if you raise more than $250,000?
This is a problem we’d love to have, and hopefully you all will continue to spread word about our film to all of your beer-drinking and documentary loving friends, so that we can exceed our original funding goal and start in on our stretch goals! We’ve already identified additional filming locations that would help to further flesh out our story, including filming in Japan at Coedo Brewery, and filming with some of the craft breweries in New Zealand & Australia. We can work these into our budget if we can hit a total of $300K raised on Kickstarter.
If we can raise a total of $500K, this will enable us to have additional graphic sequences and animation in the film to provide an even better illustration of the growth and spread of San Diego’s craft beer influence. This will let us pay all of our crew much closer to their regular market rates.
Alright, I’m sold on the film’s story and the rewards. But who’s making this thing?
Our fearless leader and Director/Producer of the film is Sheldon Kaplan of Ibhayi Media. Sheldon Kaplan was educated in South Africa and Australia. A graduate of South Africa’s National Film School, he went on to work in numerous production capacities on multiple film and video productions in South Africa and Europe before becoming an in-house television commercials producer in Sydney, Australia. In 1989 he moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a film and television development executive. In 1996 he relocated to San Diego and was involved in the early days of content creation and nascent video streaming for what was in those days referred to as the world wide web. In 1999, a personal health crisis prompted him to quit the media business and he created a brand of indigenous South African herbal teas for the US market, including the first 100% USDA organically certified South African manufactured product. In 2010 the creative muses called once again and he returned to media content creation. In 2012 his company, Ibhayi Media released SUDS COUNTY, USA, an independent feature length documentary detailing the rise of the San Diego craft beer industry, which he had followed closely as a consumer - being a lover of craft beer, good wine and fine spirits. He currently runs Ibhayi Media in San Diego and considers himself indeed fortunate to live in America’s finest city, which just so also happens to be America’s finest beer city!
Producing SUDS COUNTY 2 with Sheldon is Kevin Tostado of Tostie Productions. Kevin worked as an Assoc. Producer on SUDS COUNTY, USA, and was excited for the chance to produce this sequel with Sheldon. Kevin previously produced and directed Under the Boardwalk: The MONOPOLY Story, which won four Emmy awards. Kevin also produced Eternity The Movie, Yellow Lights, and Research. This is the fourth Kickstarter project where Kevin was a part of the creative team, and he has advised several other campaigns. You can view his Kickstarter profile here.
Sheldon will be spending lots of long hours working with our Emmy award-winning Editor, Michael Towe, to craft the final story of SUDS COUNTY 2. Michael is the owner of M2 Digital Post, Inc., a production and post production company in San Diego, CA. He has worked as an editor and producer for over 20 years specializing in corporate, broadcast and film production. In that time he has been awarded 13 Telly Awards and 2 Emmys for his corporate and broadcast work, and has had 2 short films that have screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
Behind the lens of the camera for all of our San Diego filming is our Director of Photography, Matt Geraci. Matt is a freelance lighting cameraman based in San Diego with over 20 years experience. Specializing in corporate, broadcast, commercials and national sports, he has also been fortunate to shoot across the globe. He brings a professional attitude, strong technical skills and creativity to every project. Matt has also been an avid home brewer for more than 4 years. He enjoys brewing all styles of beer, loves building and testing new equipment and is actively involved in the brewing community through clubs and contests.
Providing sound mixer and audio services for our San Diego location filming is David S. Dawson. David is a multi-faceted, award-winning artist having worked in entertainment for over 20 years in everything from concert roadie to emcee to film producer/director. For the past three years David has focused exclusively on his film career having produced three short films in 2015, two of which he wrote and directed. At the 2016 San Diego Film Awards, IntelleXual Entertainment took home five awards including Best Short Film, and David won awards for Best Visual Effects for Lefty and Best Director for Things Happen. David is also the founder and host of the popular San Diego-based entertainment and arts podcast The IntelleXual.
The official graphic designer of SUDS COUNTY 2 is Ashley Kerns. With razor-sharp focus, a unique point of view and an open mind, Ashley has designed strategic and aesthetically stunning campaigns for more than 10 years. She has worked for prominent clients including Sony, Qualcomm, Intel, Ballast Point, The Hop Concept, The Lost Abbey, Port Brewing Co., Astroglide, The Mirage Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, and more. Ashley sees every challenge as an opportunity to push her clients, her colleagues and herself forward. Mindful and positive both in and out of the office, Ashley is also a certified yoga master and a magnificent cook.
Jeff Troeber can be best described as a communications professional. Besides being a webmaster, he is a writer, video editor, motion graphics creator, videographer, photographer, voice actor, and sound engineer. Much of his career has been spent in high tech, creating manuals and videos to explain complicated products in terms that people understand. He has also worked on short films, including the 48 Hour and Four Points Film Projects, and served as an assistant editor and motion graphics creator for SUDS COUNTY, USA. Prior to delving into high tech, Jeff was an award-winning broadcast journalist, working both in radio and television. troebercommunciations.com
Mavis Media, founded by Mavis Davis, is a broadcast design and production studio specializing in motion design, animation, and production for film, television, and web. Raegan Matthews previously served as an Associate Producer on SUDS COUNTY, USA, and is returning as a production consultant for SUDS COUNTY 2. Raegan is an alumnus of the UCSD Extension Video Production program. She has been an in-house producer at digital OutPost, since 2007. Prior to dOP, Raegan worked in LA from 2001 to 2007 in production and distribution. She has worked on features, MOWs, and special series, and won Emmy awards.

Risks and challenges
Completing a film on time and on budget is difficult for all filmmakers, whether you're making a film for hundreds of millions of dollars or a low-budget documentary like our film. Our production team brings experience producing and directing other feature films that will help us to stay as close to (if not under) our budget as possible.
Additionally, we've included a 10% contingency in our production budget to help us be prepared for those unexpected expenses or delays, so that we don't have to return to Kickstarter for a finishing funds campaign.
