She is Fierce is a magazine, a platform for young talented females to show the world what's important to them.
We're an offbeat collective of creative females from across the UK who have come together (after meeting at uni) to challenge the mainstream offerings of magazines for teen girls. We want to offer them the opportunity to collaborate with us entirely and to feel part of the project from the outset. We'll achieve this by being as transparent as possible with our contributors about the progress of the magazine, as we believe that by following our story they will feel empowered to follow their dreams too.
Now we're not suggesting that teen magazines at the moment are bad. What we ARE saying is that we recognise that there are a huge number of teen girls who aren't being catered for in the magazine industry at all, and believe that She is Fierce can fill that void in a positive and encouraging way. Offering features and advice from creative women who're doing their thaaaaaang and loving it, tutorials to inspire them to try new things, not to mention the amazing work of the girls themselves.
So, how it began... At the end of September 2015, our Facebook page went live. We encouraged young people to 'sign up' if they were interested in joining us as a contributor. We got 71 girls on our database showing interest in submitting for the first issue, and by the deadline date at the end of November, we had received 16 of the most beautiful submissions.
Initially the plan was to curate these online for the first few issues, but the effort and quality of the girls work inspired us to do exactly what we hope to encourage them to do... to be brave and go for your dreams. Why should we wait? What exactly are we waiting for? If we can get a small print run, enough to reward our lovely contributors & backers, we've immediately got something we can be proud of.
Young people leave school with a fairly sparse CV. By offering them a place to publish their work, we are giving them an opportunity to say to potential employers, colleges and universities, that although they may not have the practical experience of a job, what they do have is the determination, creativity and motivation to work on something to a brief, and to show their commitment to their collaboration with She is Fierce.
The plan for 2016, is to obviously get our beautiful little Zine out. Reward our contributors with their copy, and to use our leftover copies to take to potential investors, advertisers and schools to allow us to move forward with the project. We plan to do another call for submissions in April/May, and to take the step up the ladder by producing a slightly bigger Zine in time for the Summer holidays, when we will be doing our most exciting OPEN CALL for our beautiful BIG MAGAZINE which will go out (all of errrrrthing crossed) Nov/Dec 2016.
We've done substantial research (as part of our Masters) into the teenage magazine market, and can honestly say, you really don't get much bang for your buck. With magazines generally being served up in a bag with an armful of freebies, that range from nail varnish and lipgloss, to temporary tattoos and notebooks. They vary in cost, but average around £3.80 per issue and are either weekly or fortnightly.
The ULTIMATE BUT ENTIRELY ACHIEVABLE GOAL is to become a magazine and platform that young people want to be part of and that inspires kindness, encouragement, creativity and fierceness within young women.
She is Fierce will be published twice yearly. It will be 96 pages of beautifully designed content printed on a mixture of uncoated and gloss paper, which will be worlds apart from the throwaway options of this genre that are on the newsstands today. Each issue will be timeless in that it will offer the most amazing advice for young people, and can be used for reference and inspiration again and again. It will cost between £4-£5 for each issue.
SHE IS FIERCE is a teen magazine like you’ve never seen before. We want YOU to be a part of that. Have you ever been at the start of something that’s went onto become HUGE? No? Well, here’s your chance. Go on, we dare you!
Risks and challenges
The only risk we have is that demand is higher than production. The goal we are aiming to smash is to cover the print and postage of 300 zine copies of She is Fierce. We do need to retain a percentage of the 'zines' for us to be able to send to potential investors, and to help market the project.
We've looked at the numbers and think that we should be able to retain enough copies for this purpose based on our reward structure.
Should we be lucky enough to achieve more than our funding target, we'll use any additional money to continue to promote and underpin our next print run for the magazine.
We're dedicated to changing the face of teen magazines, and are committed to getting the project talked about in 2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
