HOWDY!! I'm Shawn Theron!
Welcome to the first ever SOGH ART TRUCK!
WHAT IS THE SOGH ART TRUCK?
Art is a beautiful and unifying medium that has shaped and influenced my life in a multitude of ways. While selling my paintings at a festival this past summer, I came across a food truck and the idea suddenly popped into my head. Why not have a truck for art? LETS MAKE AN ART TRUCK!
Flash forward nine months and that truck now sits in front of my house.
If our Kickstarter campaign is successful, The SOGH Art Truck will be the Mid-Atlantic's first mobile art gallery. Although the truck has been purchased, it needs to be renovated to provide the true experience of a gallery space, allowing viewers to walk up into the truck and “exit through the gift shop” (the back door, haha!). The SOGH Art Truck provides mobile exposure to the art community, not just for my own work (aka SOGH), but also the works of guest artists, to get art mobile and get it into the communities! Lets start and create large scale public art projects. Lets get the world to start creating! be apart of something BIG and lets start making this world a better place!
Imagine an outdoor classroom appearing at regional events. Imagine being able to show your art work at multiple festivals, multiple cities, multiple states. Imagine a fleet of art trucks touring the country! The potential for mobile art spaces and the impact they can have is endless, but I need your help in getting it to the next step.
WHAT WILL YOUR MONEY GO TOWARDS?
That's where you guys come in!
The truck will need to have exterior doors, stairs, and railing installed to allow it to be accessed from the side of the cab and the back. Some body work needs to be done on the hood and undercarriage for long term sustainability. Non-slip floor, interior lights, and fans need to be installed to ensure safety, visibility, and comfort. A small, yet super quiet, generator needs to be purchased to power the truck while at a location.
Beyond these necessities, I’d love to have materials to make the truck itself a work of art. Let’s keep Baltimore great by having this truck be a true spectacle on the road (within safety limits of course)! A translucent ceiling or a skylight dome, neon lights, television screens – let’s customize it into something to serve the community in cool and awesome ways! One of my BIG HOPES - If things go **really well** with this first art truck. why not have several of them out and about available to other artist to expose the world to more ART! To get people involved in creating public art, community events and whatever else we can dream up!
If you want to see the SOGH Art Truck become a reality, please make a pledge and help us reach our goal of $9.500.
WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT?
Baltimore’s first art truck, of course! But with that said, varying levels of donations will receive different incentives. All donations will have their name written on the truck for all to see. After that, incentives range from SOGH keychains, to personalized postcards, to original SOGH paintings - from Art on a Stick to Super HUGE Paintings, days of Adventures in and at my studio to the American Visionary Art Museum.
WHAT IS SOGH?
SOGH is more than the name of my body of work. It, for me, is always a way to have a positive impact whomever i can. It is the act of making the world a more beautiful place... and it's based in a real life story and it all is my mission in life! ...and it's happening, Big TIME!
In 2003, Red, the one who was my mom, passed away from cancer. Knowing that our time together was limited, in the two weeks before she was gone, I ran out and purchased a video camera to capture every one of our remaining moments together as we said our goodbyes.
During that time, an understanding came to Red – a sense of knowing beyond life and death that only comes with the clarity of one’s time left. Red gave me a series of requests at that time, some things very pointed and direct, others which were vague and difficult to understand. Her last request for me was to “turn on the light,” and not in the sense of turning on a bedroom light or drawing open a curtain. “S.O.G.H.,” she said, spelling it out. “Remember it, know it!” She kept repeating these words, imploring me to understand, even though I had no idea what “it” was. Our last moments together were spent shoving me in this direction – a desire to find what SOGH meant and to carry out Red’s mission. In the beginning, SOGH didn’t have anything to do with art or paintings. After Red’s passing, I have never stopped capturing moments – whether it be in writing, photography, video, or paintings. This desire culminated in 12,290 images, capturing the events of my first year of SOGH, as part of a show in the All Things Round exhibit at the American Visionary Arts Museum. and i have never stopped. now, 107,000 images later i have 11 years captured.
Rebecca, Founder and Director of the American Visionary Art Museum along with Ted, head of the AVAM’s gift shop, offered me wall space. Within 30 minutes, I had sold 2 paintings. By the end of my first year, I sold 1,357 paintings and it's been amazing ever since.
With these blessings in the art world i have learned it is just as important to give back! Sometimes I'll give someone a painting just to make their day, or donate to a foundation to help raise funds for a great cause, or best yet, I'll hand a painting to a kid who comes into a museum who is inspired by my art. how awesome is that?! Two SOGH paintings are the first paintings to ever reach the South Pole. In 2011, Baltimore City commissioned SOGH paintings for EVERY MAYOR in America – over 800 paintings. I’ve received pictures from SOGH fans from Egypt’s Great Pyramids, Paris’s Eiffel Tower, China, Africa, and Afghanistan.
SOGH is a worldwide phenomenon that is literally bringing people together through art. My journey with SOGH has dragged me back from the Hell that is losing someone and to the Light that is living.
SOGH, guided by great forces and big blessings has taken me upon a wild journey, with Red’s requests deeply embedded throughout. I create work for people that has a true life value to the piece on the wall, a powerful story that creates that very piece, and a journey that it is a part of.
My success, coupled with the love and the blessings I’ve seen, has giving me an inkling and the pure hope that art can change the world - and that in itself is a huge part of my goal. Let us all come together and literally make the world a more beautiful place. To link us all together in creating something magnificent - for us in our now and for those who will come years from now!!!! Imagine if we could say HI to those in the future - well, in a way we can... and are!
This truck will be an ongoing project. it will grow and evolve and help create awesomeness for years to come. To get all that started here's a quick list of some of the things the truck needs and rough costs.
Pay the loan on the truck itself - $3800.
The super quiet generator - $1000.
Side Doors installed - $1000 - $2000
Flooring, steps, handrails - all geared for people's safety - $800
Walls, storage for supplies and hanging system - $500
Body work. undercarriage treatment. about $1500
various permits and fee's - about $400.
Roughly all that comes to about 9,500.
**this doesn't include the materials to really do up the truck itself
If we're lucky...
IF this kickstarter campaign is super successful and we are that blessed. I want to look into is getting a different engine. As i found out, while the deal was great for the truck itself. it's newly rebuilt engine gets horrendous MPG. (average 7.5 miles per gallon) a newer diesel engine can get 16+ MPG. If we really can - BIODIESEL!!!!!!!
Then, Skylight, solar lighting and a lot of amazing other things.
Then... if the campaign is super duper unbelievably successful... LETS MAKE LOTS OF ART TRUCKS!!!!!!!!! Imagine 5, 10, what about 20+ Art Trucks all around the country... All Creating. All Inspiring. People everywhere joining together to literally help make this world a better place! I get excited just thinking about it!
ALSO, if YOU have any ideas for potential projects for the Truck - contact me. perhaps we can make them a reality!
WHO IS SHAWN THERON?
“We’ve all heard people speak on the subject of changing the world or doing something to make the world a better place. We often find ourselves questioning the sincerity in that sentiment. From the mouth of Shawn Theron these goals and aspirations seem attainable.” – Peter Cardamone at What Weekly
“There are a kazillion self-taught artists out there, and I don’t have an idea of others that have the same sort of demand from the public. There’s a magic that he has. And beyond that, Shawn is one of the genuinely nicest people you could ever meet. That’s a rare form of art in this life.” - Rebecca Hoffberger, Founder and Director of the American Visionary Arts Museum
“Baltimore artist Shawn Theron is leading a new kind of art revolution that’s bright, bold and painted on just about any material you can think of from bedroom doors to scrap lumber. This means that every piece is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that comes in any shape or size to suit your taste and space requirements. The best part is that a piece from the SOGH collection can be purchased for as low as $10 for the super minis and up to $290 for a 4’ x 4’ painting, making decorating your home or office with original art easily affordable.” - Keri Ann Beazell at CBS Baltimore

Risks and challenges
The Challenges with starting an art truck are there. I wish it were as simple as hang art in the truck and lets go places - lets go inspire people! AND It will be that simple once we get to that point... but we need to get to that point.
Right now, it's just a truck. To get it Mobile and Safe at it's basic level, we have to think of everything from safety of the folks coming into the truck, to mechanical, to insurance, to the transformation to make it a mobile sculpture, to permits, and event fees and lots of other things.
I've been creating for a while now and this dream of mine is taking shape. there are a lot of logistics involved but nothing I/we can't handle. When I need help I am the first to ask for it and seek a great, cost effective resolution. People are already really excited by the idea of the truck and what we're going to do.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
