About

I am a former New York police forensic artist drawing 64 facial images of composite friends. I'll then draw a series of composites from the composites; 32 drawings combining four faces each, 16 drawings combining eight faces each, and so on until finally there is one drawing derived from all 128 faces.

I'm posting the drawings to my website as each one is completed. I'm using charcoal on Stonehenge paper, 8.5 x 11". The first 64 people who sent in usable photos are included, and drawings are made in the order that the photos were received. From the initial set of 64, the original drawings will go to the friends of the people who sent in the photos - an experiment in gift economy. I began accepting submissions in November 2007 and filled up all the spots in May 2008. Participants include people from across the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, China, and beyond.

I've filled all the photo entries for this project, but now I'm looking for some financial support to help bring it to completion. As of June 2009, 36 drawings are done and I've got 91 left to make.

Kickstarter funds will help pay for materials (paper, charcoal pencils, fixative, frames), as well as BFF posters and books that I'd like to make. I plan to have a show of the drawings in the physical world when they are all completed, and then distribute the originals. Putting on the show will involve a variety of costs as well (shipping, signage, invitations, etc). Supporting the BFF project will help this all come to fruition.

BFF has been featured on Boing Boing and in FHM Germany. I posted a walk-through tutorial video, "How To Draw A BFF", to YouTube, and it's included on this page as well.

To be updated when new drawings are posted, subscribe to my RSS News feed, or follow me on twitter @shawnfeeney. Pledging even just $1 will get you a shout-out on my website. If you've got deeper pockets, I'll draw you a custom BFF-style composite of your very own. You can pledge even if the goal has been met. Many thanks!
