UPDATE: Wow guys! We did it! I wanted to state that if for any reason the goal number drops below the 30k due to canceled or adjusted pledges, I'll still honor the stretch goal....unless it drops waaaaaay down then that would be terrible. Thank you guys so much!
Welcome to ... Kindergarten
For those familiar with this logo, the amazing voice of Welcome to Nightvale, Cecil Baldwin, recorded a creepy read through of "Breathe Easy" and it is amazing. So amazing that I'm adding the recording file as a new 65$ tier for all of you NightVale fans.
UPDATE! FUNDING SUCCESS!
Thank you everyone who's backed this project! I never realized how many amazing fans I have, and I can't wait for you to see the world's I've created for my Lucy. We still have a ways to go but stretch goals are coming later along with a video update!
Stretch Goal 1: If we can hit the 30k goal I'll be adding a spot varnish to the cover of the book to give it some extra creepiness to it. I'll also be adding another story, The Dream Catcher, bringing the total stories to 12. The book will also be expanded to include the Lost Lucy Gallery which consists of fan submitted versions of Lucy as well as artist I look up !
Stretch Goal 2: If we can hit the 2nd stretch goal I'll be releasing the book with the infant skull gold foil version (the original cover will be on the interior) along with the spot varnish finish and an additional creepy poem and more art!
Stretch Goal 3: Along with all of the previous stretch goal rewards I'll also include the kickstarter only 4th installment of my Scars & Sketches collection of art. Bringing the total page count around 80 to 100 pages!
UPDATE: NEW TIER!
Hello! My name is Shawn Coss, and I'm an artist from the Ohio wasteland. You may know me from a popular webcomic turned cartoon show that I work on, Cyanide & Happiness, or some of my designs of darker nature found all over the internet and dark alleys.
As a child, I was obsessed with the Stephen Gammel artwork found inside Scary Stories to tell in the dark. Each story was short and easy to read, while also unsettling. I couldn't get enough of them and I wanted to pay homage to those great stories with a collection of my own but taking the reader into a darker more uncomfortable place. And ever since I've become a new parent, overwhelming fear and stress have become a new part of my daily emotional routine.
As an artist, I found the best way to deal with those fears are by creating stories and artwork to help me cope in my own messed up and morbid way.
I must warn though, that unlike Scary Stories, there's very little humor in these stories. I touch on subjects of suicide, death, depression, and neglect and much more. It's in no way meant to offend the easily disturbed. It's my way of exorcising my own personal demons and allow myself to battle the hopelessness so that I can move on and grow as an artist and father. This is my first time diving into story writing to accompany my artwork. For years, art alone would help me through troubled times, but since my daughter was born, these creeping fears of losing her couldn't be captured in art alone. So the stories came, and each one has helped me cope with those fears and nightmares. Therapy at it's finest.
KinderGarten, which creepily translates to "Garden of Children" in German, is a collection of 11 creepy stories that I've created over the past couple years. Each vignette is a personal fear I've had since having my children. The book features a young child named Lucy, a very unfortunate young girl who is the focus of each entry and finds herself in some dark situations. Fans of Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark and creepy pasta stories - but who like the darker side of storytelling - will enjoy the horrors I came up with and apologies ahead of time for any lack of sleep you develop.
The book will be 40 pages (or MORE!) thick with 11 stories and accompanying artwork created by my cold dead hands. It'll also feature a gallery of select artist's renditions of Lucy and her world.
This is the first time I've created artwork with specific stories and will allow the reader to look deeper into my pencil strokes. Each story is written by myself with the help of his fellow writer friend, Mahlon Rhodes (who helps string the words together to flow better and to creep you out more).

Let's explore the darkness together.
Though there's been a lot of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark tribute books coming out as of late (as well as a Del Toro movie in the works) I want to pay homage as well as separate myself from being considered "another installment". This book is more for those of us who were children who grew up with those books but are looking for something darker. If you're a fan of Del Toro and unsettling situations, this book will deliver. Let's bring it to life shall we?
Risks and challenges
Every project has a risk, and with me being the only one running this project, there could be delays since it's my first KS. I'll be up front and transparent every step of the way.
I'm working with some awesome people who are willing to volunteer their time to help me make this first launch a success. There's always chances for delay due to printing or injury if I lose a hand while signing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
