About

The story of Netflix has more drama than the movies the global internet channel rents. Our documentary recounts the company's long struggle for greatness against a number of entertainment industry giants. The founding teams of Netflix and Blockbuster Online and other industry insiders tell the story of how a tiny, broke Silicon Valley startup, took on the way the world gets its entertainment and changed it profoundly. It is a tale marked by disasters, lucky breaks, personal betrayal and broken hearts.

Netflix vs the World charts Netflix’s two-decade rise and transformation of home entertainment, content production and the entertainment industry itself through the voices of its founders, rivals, and industry experts.

Author Gina Keating set out to make this film in 2016, when Netflix co-founder Marc Randolph agreed to sit down for a film crew at the University of Texas at Austin to discuss how he and a team of Silicon Valley geniuses thought up the idea that became the world's largest streaming channel. A year later, director Shawn Cauthen (coming off producing The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story) reached out to Keating about being in a documentary he wanted to make on Netflix. The two agreed to join forces to tell one of the greatest success stories in Hollywood history.

Gina had interviewed Marc and his founding team in 2011 for her book Netflixed: The Epic Battle for America's Eyeballs (Portfolio/Penguin, 2012). The team of Blockbuster executives who nearly killed Netflix in 2007 also sat for interviews for the book. The story was so compelling -- a Wall Street fairy tale -- that she vowed to one day make a film to bring these forceful personalities to the screen in their own words. Five years later, Netflix became the first global internet movie channel. It seemed important to capture the founding story on film, and to explore the battles that shaped Netflix and the world of entertainment, as well as to imagine where it all might end up.

We interviewed the Netflix and Blockbuster Online founding teams in Texas and California. With the help of co-producers Michael Flaherty, co-founder of Walden Media, and Valerie McGowan of Inkling Entertainment, we got crucial interviews with industry insiders in Boston and Los Angeles.

We finished shooting and now have a working cut. WE NEED YOUR HELP to finish the film. With the amount you donate, we will be able to hire a composer, animator, graphic designer, poster artist, and someone to do sound design. Also the money will help pay for legal and festival fees.

Our interviewees include:

Netflix founding team: Marc Randolph (co-founder), Christina Kish (marketing chief), Corey Bridges (customer acquisition), Jim Cook (operations), Boris and Vita Droutman (computer engineers), Heidi Nyburg (product management), Erich Ziegler (marketing), Paul Kirincich (analytics), Steve Swasey (communications), Tom Dillon (COO), Tracy de Soto (assistant to Reed Hastings)

Blockbuster: John Antioco (chairman and CEO), Nick Shepard (COO), Shane Evangelist (General Manager Blockbuster Online), Ben Cooper (Blockbuster Online marketing), JW Craft (Blockbuster Online operations) Alan Payne (Former Blockbuster Franchisee)

We also interviewed legendary Oscar nominated producer and former studio chief Bill Mechanic plus CEO of CEOVIEW and former Vice Chair of Arnold Advertising Fran Kelly III who also is the author of The Breakaway Brand: How Great Brands Stand Out.

Michael D Smith, professor of information technology and marketing at Carnegie Mellon helped us understand how Netflix shaped the digital streaming landscape.

Deadline Hollywood journalist Dawn Chmielewski took us through the history of the dotcom boom and bust and how Hollywood and Silicon Valley came together in streaming.

Entertainment journalists David Griffin (IGN), Gerrad Hall (Entertainment Weekly), Didier Alloush (Canal+), Gui de Mulder (Movistar+), and Harry McCracken (Fast Company) helped us understand what it was like to watch Netflix go from DVD by mail company to the world's largest streaming channel and production company.

Risks and challenges

We are making a documentary about one of the largest entertainment companies in the world, so we have to take our time to make sure we get every story right. There are no short cuts here. Unlike other projects, this movie has been shot and edited already. We need the Kickstarter funds to bring the film to the next level. This movie will be finished.
