I've been funding my own films for the past ten years from my first film The Boy with the Big Head (British Film Festival 2000) to Ignite (Sundance Film Festival 2008) to my most recent films Creeper (AFI FEST 2012) and After Suicide (Featured on Badass Digest 2013). Lately I've been making my films more experimental, lower profile and lower budget. For once I want to make something with a more traditional narrative and I need your help. I'd love to make a movie that my friends and family will really care about. This movie is all about great acting and telling a sincere story. For a low budget movie this will take me a lot of time, preparation, and resources.
What is the money being used for?
I've been making no budget films, music videos, and commercials for the past few years and I really know how to make every penny count. But even on no budget movies the costs add up fast. From transportation of the cast and crew to supplying meals, renting props, gear, costumes, getting hard drives to store the movie on, to getting location permits. For example, I have a very generous company who is going to let me use their equipment for free but I will need to purchase an insurance policy to cover the equipment.
Once the movie is done shooting and all the work is completed in post the total budget of the movie will be around five thousand dollars. I'll mostly be using my own gear and getting help from generous friends.
If I should be fortunate enough to reach my goal what will happen if I raise more than $3,000? A lot. If I raise $5,000 It will allow me to shoot at another amazing location in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and to utilize professional post production facilities to finish the film. I will be able to get a professional sound mix and have the movie color corrected so I can show Ashes of a Cowboy on the big screen. It will also help us in a major way with submitting to film festivals. The costs add up really quickly and every dollar pledged will make a huge difference on how far we can take this movie. What happens if I raise ten thousand dollars or more? As soon as I finish the short film I will immediately start working on the feature version of Ashes of a Cowboy and I'll send the outline to all of my Kickstarter supporters.
I have a story to tell and I want you to feel connected to this film, that's my ultimate goal and I will not be able to finish this film without your help.
About the Filmmaker
We're going to keep our crew as low profile as possible for Ashes of a Cowboy and focus all of our energy on getting the best performances possible. We'll be shooting the entire film using natural sunlight and we're going to shoot at real locations. You can take a look at some of my other films and videos at shawnbannon.com
Shepherd Stevenson and Kyle Bannon have acted together in several films including "When We Get to Heaven" and Brainwashed Love. We've rehearsed the heck out of the script and created a realistic environment to get the most interesting and believable performances. During our test shoot we had the cops called on us for being too realistic but now we're trying to stay out of trouble.
If you pledge $35 or more I'll send you the Ashes of a Cowboy button. The size will be around 2-2.5 inches. This is my preliminary artwork so it might change slightly with the final product. I'm also working on a nice Ashes of a Cowboy postcard (offset print) with a handwritten note that I'll send out to everyone who pledges $25 or more.
I'm very excited about this reward. I'm going to make this Blu-Ray as special as possible.
Get your hands on a really cute handmade stuffed animal made exclusively for Ashes of a Cowboy. We'll make sure we ship these by early December 2013 so you can send them off as the perfect holiday gift. We've designed California desert and mountain themed stuffed animals to represent our lead characters journey to his uncle's house. If you select the $100 stuffed animal reward you can choose which one you want and you can also get the entire collection for $250. The sketch above is the full-set and here is our first prototype below of the Kit Fox.
If you don't see the perfect reward for you and you want me to add more, feel free to shoot me an e-mail with recommendations. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
We'll be shooting in remote locations with very little local resources. The total number of shoot days will be around 5 days. We've shot several tests and we're very confident that we'll deliver a high quality film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
