About

We'd like to thank you immensely for showing an interest in our project. We believe further exploration into the life and work of Shaw, one of the world's greatest playwrights, alongside performances of his works, should be encouraged and enjoyed by a wider audience.

This funding campaign is raising money for company accommodation, travel expenses, the logistics of transporting set and scenery around the country and to ensure our cast members are professionally paid.

WHAT WE ARE DOING!

As a result of a recent decision by the National Trust to rest the annual plays at Shaw's Corner in Ayot St Lawrence, Hertfordshire, three theatre companies with an interest in Shaw decided to come together. The goal of our collaboration is to keep the tradition, dating back to 1952, of performing Shaw's plays in his home village.

After securing the Palladian Church in Ayot, [where Shaw sometimes played the organ] as a new venue for a production of ARMS AND THE MAN, we discovered that other venues had an interest in our project. Happily we have extended the run and in addition to The Palladian Church a tour will visit, Lauderdale House in Highgate London, The Sarah Thorne Theatre in Broadstairs Kent and Harlington Manor in Bedfordshire. This has increased the potential to find our audience and deliver our mission, but also adds to the running costs and we would really appreciate your help.

WHO WE ARE!

  •  SHAW2020  is a limited theatre company made up of actor-members of The Shaw Society. The society was founded on Bernard Shaw’s 85th birthday in 1941.  At first he would have nothing to do with the idea, and it was his reluctant letter of acquiescence that decreed that the Society should become “…a rallying point for the co-operation and education of kindred spirits and a forum for their irreconcilable controversies” which is now incorporated into the Society's Constitution. SHAW2020 is dedicated to performance, adaptation, education and promoting equality using Shaw’s plays and writing to engage wider, more diverse audiences, especially in the run-up to 2020, when Shaw comes out of copyright.
  •  Michael Friend Productions is a theatre production company established in 1992, touring productions of classical and modern plays. For the past 25 years MFP has presented plays by Shaw at his National Trust home Shaw's Corner. Michael Friend is a vice-president of The Shaw Society
  •  SplitShift Theatre is a new theatre company who specialise in reworkings of classics and performing them in interesting spaces.

CAN I HELP SPREAD THE WORD?

ABSOLUTELY! Please share a link to this campaign to anyone with an interest in live regional theatre, share on your social media pages and you could even drop it into a conversation with like-minded arts lovers.

We are delighted that our tour of ARMS AND THE MAN, has the support of Dame Judi Dench, Bonnie Greer OBE and The Shaw Society

Risks and challenges

One of the biggest risks of touring theatre, especially to unconventional performances spaces, is health and safety:Are those wires safely truncated?......Are the digs safe, clean and habitable?......Does the company receive enough break time to alleviate the perils of tiredness?
Luckily we have a permanent company manager on hand to ensure we are all safe and secure during our 5 week tour.
