I know it's hard to even think about Christmas right now. I had to put up a Christmas tree, string up some lights and grow a beard before I felt the smallest fa-la-la feelings of Christmas.
But now that I'm in the yuletide swing of things... I'm making some real progress on this EP (a short album of 5 or 6 songs). I've rewritten classics like "O Holy Night" and "Jesus Joy Of Man's Desiring". I've been fiddling with new arrangements of modern standards too, and practicing a few originals of my own. I've been decking halls and singing about Bob's tail ring all Summer...with only the occasional brief break for a popsicle.
We'll be using lots of real instruments. (Remember those, kids?) I don't know exactly what we'll play on the album but I know what we're bringing to the studio: guitars, banjo, melodica, glockenspiel, ukelele, piano and mandolin. If we raise more money than we need? It'd be great to add some strings too. I promise, no jingle bells. Oh, and there will be plenty to tap your toes to - not an album of slow songs.
Gabe Scott has signed on to produce these songs. He plays banjo, dobro, dulcimer, piano, guitar and a zillion other things and has lent his talents to tours and albums by Bebo Norman, David Crowder, Ingrid Michaelson, Andrew Peterson and many many more.
All this Christmasy goodness will cost $15,540. Here's how that breaks down:
- Recording, mixing, mastering = $12,000
- Packaging: $290
- Duplication: $446
- Postage (for sending out rewards): $200
- Kickstarter fees: $807
- Amazon Payment Processing: $672
THE CHRISTMAS TOUR
I'm honored to be part of the Francesca Battistelli Christmas Tour that kicks of this December - to sing and speak on behalf of Compassion International. (Check out Rewards #4 and #5.) Stay tuned to shaungroves.com/tour for cities and dates as they're added. I'd love you to hear this music live and I'd like to thank you in-person for your help making this album.
Risks and challenges
I suppose something heavy could fall on me in the studio - a soundboard, a bass player, or such. And when banjo's involved there's always some inherent risk - an incontrollable urge to watch NASCAR or date a cousin. These are common side-effects. Other than that? No real risks on this project. It's just music, after all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
